    I booked a trip to Alicante airport for myself and my girlfriend. We wanted to hire a rental car and ended up booking with a hire company called Goldcar.

    They seemed quite cheap and already have "all-inclusive" insurance included so it sounded good.

    I will make sure I never go near this company again.

    Firstly, when we arrived we had to queue for just over an hour before getting to the front of the desk. Being peak-season we weren't too suprised and, although inconvenient, we could bare this.

    When we reached the desk the rep was very abrupt and bordered of rudeness. This didn't really bother me (at the end of the day this guy was working and had a lot of holiday-makers to get through).

    When we had finished with the details the rep asked if I wanted "full CDW insurance" or just "basic" cover for tyres and glass. Now, as I have hired cars several times in the past I am fully aware of exclusions (tyres/glass/keys etc) and so replied that I did not require any extra insurance and my credit card covers for the tyre/glass etc charge - but did query the "full CDW insurance" he was offering. The man looked at me and said "if you are involved in a crash then we will need to charge you for all repairs". I told him that this was already included in the cost I had paid for the hire and highlighted the wording on my voucher which backed up my understanding. "it is not correct. if you have a crash you only have 3rd party and we will take a 5000.00EUR excess-deposit until the repairs are worked out" - using these words exactly. The rep was basically telling me I had zero cover whereas the paperwork I had and the website tells me I was all-inclusive.

    After several more minutes of this I agreed to take the extra cover so I could enjoy the rest of my holiday stress-free and had to pay up a further 60.00EUR.

    The rep just handed me an electronic paid to sign which had no indication of what I was paying for or agreeing to exactly. A few days later I inspected the contract to see that the total price and been converted to GBP with a 2% mark-up, the cost of fuel was priced at 82.00EUR and I was charged for some kind of diesel-upgrade on top without my consent (I had booked a petrol!).
    The vehicle itself had some problems but it is rare to be given a perfect rental car, especially in Spain, so this was OK.

    When I got home I sent an email to my broker ("Carjet") who confirmed my understanding of the insurance (all-inclusive except for the tyres/glass etc). They could not really disagree as I was going by the wording on their's/Goldcar's website.

    Carjet then contacted Goldcar with my complaint to get to the bottom of it. After a few weeks, Goldcar replied to say that their rates were all-inclusive except for a few minor items and they did not take any deposit in case of a crash. Goldcar said that I must have misunderstood due to the language barrier and the cover I had taken was only cover for punctures/loss of keys etc and their rates included in more just 3rd party.

    After a few more emails back and forth Goldcar closed the case stating "we can't refund when the client has signed the contract".
    This email probably makes me sound like newbie who doesn't read the small print but I really am not (it gives me something to do during the flight!). My partner also backs up entirely what I have said and encouraged my to write this.

    That's my review. Stay away from Goldcar if it can be helped. The salesmen at the desk will lie to you outright in order to make an extra few Euros commission.

    I have prebooked my next trip and Carjet were able to arrange the car hire through "Solmar" this time for the same price.

    Goldcar are one of the few companies that do NOT require a credit card when hiring

    However, as a result they require a large debit card deposit (usually 1200 euro for the cheapest car), or their insurance package which typically costs as much again as the voucher bought through AutoEurope or whichever agent you use

    So far so good, and I have had excellent customer service in Malaga and Nice

    However in Madeira I was told there would be a 22% service charge deducted from the 1200 deposit, so I should take out their insurance package instead because it was roughly the same cost and I would have 'peace of mind'

    I refused, and paid the deposit, much to their irritation

    I complained to AutoEurope and fortunately upon returning the car the deduction from the deposit was only 70 euro - which could almost be accounted for via currency and bank charges (which was mentioned in the T&C)

    This only added 30% to the cost of the voucher, so hardly a disaster

    I also took the precaution of arriving early at the airport to return the car in order to be sure that the car would be inspected for the deposit return

    Goldcar can work out really well, but it is obvious that some offices (is it a franchise?) have very dubious practices

    So if like me your options are limited because you don't have a credit card - be careful, and take all possible precautions if you use Goldcar

    I had a car booked with Goldcar 23/2/18 at Madeira airport staff so rude , the car was booked via a reputable travel agent fully insured CDW the lot , we were told that this insurance was not enough ,fuel needed to be paid for and a deposit of 1200 euros after a short exchange and my objection to such charges Goldcar refused to hire the car to me !
    I went and found another company just to the left of the Goldcar office at Madeira airport , simple, cost 32 euros for CDW ,car inspected on pick up and drop off return with same level of fuel .
    Credit card bill has arrived no extra charges
    We will be using this company again .

    Yes , new to this so being careful, Rodavante. origional hire booked for 7 days booked by my wife and she paid £ 86 .00 this was less than the transfer from airport and back , we have hired cars all over the world and never come across anything like Gold car .
    Currently trying to get the £86.00 back from travel company I have an appointment with shop manager on Thursday so softly softly until then

    Madeira's Rodavante walk in prices will make you go weak at the knees, I've not used them so can't comment otherwise.

    However I have used Bravacar (pre-booked via AutoEurope) on about 20 occasions, for anything from 3 to 14 days. Their cars are a little tired and their prices are the lowest on the island, but I have never had anything other than superb service. As a result they are often fully booked, so advance booking is essential except very low season.

    If you'd rather have a brand new car and risk being penalised for the inevitable door ding or bumper scratch (over which you have no control) then you always have the choice of Hertz, Sixt etc.

    The 365 complainants above are just a few of thousands of other unhappy punters who forgot to check reviews first; 450,000 complaints on Google and thousands on Tripadvisor alone, such as

    The only surprise is that this thread hasn't been trolled by a GOLDCAR bot called Victoria R who usually responds with emollient PR messages for Goldcar; (did she deliberately name herself after the British Queen, Victoria Regina to add gravitas?)

    Less cynically and more helpfully, there is an excellent Tripadvisor post with general advice about car hire in Spain, from a regular contributor called Ceejayblue; #1 at 951907

    Yes, please avoid Goldcar at all cost.
    It is better to stick to the big companies - Hertz, Avis, Europcar etc.

    Avoid goldcar and cartrawler
    Unfortunately I did not see any of the threads warning about GoldCar before renting a car, ordered though CarTrawler. On arrival at their office near Chania airport, Crete, I was asked to sign the contract and present my credit card. The contract was mostly written in greek and it was impossible for me to understand what I was signing. On my request I was told that I was signing for and making a credit card reservation for fuel and theft/accident. This seemed reasonable as CarTrawler had already informed me that I would have to pay a deposit, and the payable amount reported was in the same range as requested by GoldCar, so I had no reason not to believe what the GoldCar representative told me. As later informed by CarTrawler, the amount I was signing for was in fact an additional insurance that I did not request and which I did not need as I was already covered. I was not even asked if I wanted the insurance.
    I have been in contact wiith both CarTrawler and GoldCar, without any success in getting my money back. I think CarTrawler also has a responsibility as they are including GoldCar in their search engines, but they really don't care. I will therefore in future avoid both GoldCar and CarTrawler. I had a similar incident some years ago renting a car through Rentalcars. In this case the case was excellently solved by Rentalcars, and I got my money refunded within two weeks.

    Sorry but just to add to this thread I booked a flight and car hire, Goldcar, with Ryanair from Bournemouth. I had already purchased the excess insurance advised but this site so no need to get their ridiculously priced extra insurance. When I got home I had two extra bills that I was not aware of 70 euros for excess mileage and 8 euros for getting my car from the airport terminal. Neither of these I have had before on the many years that we have hired cars at Malaga airport. After e-mailing, they do not allow you to contact them by phone, I was e-mailed back stating that as I did not take out their extra insurance they would charge for excess mileage. I am a bit of a saddo and read the terms and conditions given to me with my keys at the desk and this is not written in those t&c's. Nor was this explained to me at the desk. However, apparently it is in the websites t&c's and therefore correct in their eyes. I tried to argue this with their customer services department but I was told that this is the response from the department that deals with complaints and therefore the end of the matter. No recourse, no one to escalate or argue with, the end. No more Goldcar for me that's for sure and next time maybe a bit extra reading on this site for other travellers experiences. Pity as I have never had this issue before. On another note after MSE's programme on telly the other night I have now bought an annual excess insurance policy with CARHIREEXCESS.COM and it looks very good, and very reasonably priced.

    AVOID GOLDCAR They are out and out crooks


    I booked a hire car for a holiday in Majorca through Auto Europe - after it was recommended on Martin's Money Saving Tips.

    Before the holiday I printed all the Auto Europe documentation off prior to the trip and took it with me.

    When my family (wife and children) and I arrived at midnight in Palma Majorca in July 2018 I showed my booking documentation to the assistant at the GOLDCAR desk. The assistant insisted I needed to take out the GOLDCAR Relax car insurance on the car even though I pointed out the terms and conditions of the Auto Europe booking which specified that any excess for damage to the car was covered and that I would have to pay a €1550 deposit. I assured him that I had sufficient funds on my Virgin One charge card to pay for the €1550 deposit. He still insisted that scratches to the car were not covered and that we would be charged €600 in the event of any damage to the car.
    He would simply not release the car until I paid €365.93 which included €130.00 Fuel deposit. The whole experience was extremely stressful for myself and my family as I had already spent half a day in the UK looking at car hire and insurance options thoroughly on social media and otherwise. It was just past midnight when we arrived and did not count for this horrible experience.

    When I was back home I rang Auto Europe and emailed them to explain what had happened . I spoke with someone called Yuliya several times who reassured me over the phone that Autoeurope were responsible and would investigate my missold insurance and challenge it on my behalf if Goldcar disputed it. I had already received some emails from Goldcar - which I told her about - that completely disregarded what I was telling them about being forced in to buying unneccessary insurance.

    Yuliya asked me to obtain a letter from my bank detailing the fact that I had a valid card and sufficient funds in my account to make the €1550 deposit. Which I duly did. Several weeks later I got the following email back from Jo„o C. Auto Europe UK Customer Service :

    "Hope this email finds you well.

    We have contacted Goldcar to dispute the amount you have been charged for the local insurance, according to Goldcar you have choose to take the Super Relax cover with them and they have sent us your rental agreement with your signature showing that you have accepted the charges.

    Please note that at the time of pick up you must sign the local rental agreement and in doing so you agreed to the additional items. The rental contract is an agreement solely between you and the local supplier. Auto Europe has no influence on any additional items or services that were signed and paid locally. It is not possible for Auto Europe to dispute any of these charges.
    Attached to this E-Mail you will find the rental agreement from Goldcar."

    I am furious I explained all this at the outset and Autoeurope would have known I had signed an agreement with Goldcar for the 'Relax insurance' so why waste my time over several weeks asking for a letter from my bank etc?

    I was unnecessarily charged €235.93 for insurance cover I did not need and I still want a refun. I am also very dissappointed in Martins Money Saving Tips for recommending Autoeurope in the first place.

    It cannot be emphasised enough that if you have this sort of problem in Spain you should ask for a "complaint form" - and if they will not give you a form, you call the police. Mere possession of the form is probably adequate evidence that you have only signed the hire contract in order to mitigate your losses (although it is probably preferable to insist that the name of the organisation is filled in.)

    In the absence of a form I wonder if you might be successful in the small claims court in reclaiming your full payment to Auto-europe, on the basis that the car hire contract which you paid them for, was not provided.

Mere possession of the form is probably adequate evidence that you have only signed the hire contract in order to mitigate your losses (although it is probably preferable to insist that the name of the organisation is filled in.)
