I think they should be closed personally, or how about late opening.

I definitely don't agree with the like of Next opening at 6am, and staff being in from 3am, how is anyone meant to enjoy Christmas when they have to be in work at 3am.

I don't think it should be law that shops should be closed - but I think it should be law that no non essential staff are on a rota to work on Christmas day or boxing day - if staff choose to volunteer, for triple or quadruple pay, then so be it! (And I include pubs, restaurants, footballers, stadium attendants etc in this).

Christmas day is a time for families - it should not be spoilt by commercialism.

A friend of mine used to work at Next, she had to work until late Xmas eve and then start early for the Boxing Day sales ):

]M assuming you work in retail? If not then it doesn apply to you, if you do then by you not working (and the store being closed) to go and see your family your denying someone going shopping. If thats the day they want to go shopping thats their prerogative. Wow you completely missed the point but ok. I don't, but my immediate family do. It would be nice to spend more time with them over the holiday rather than just for 1 day k thnx

And thats ultimately the problem when saying who wouldnt want an extra day off. It doesnt just stop at close shops on boxing day, it goes to close pubs, close sporting events, close taxis and public transport. Where I live there is already very very limited public transport on boxing day, taxis will charge 3x the normal fare

Boxing day is one of the biggest days of the year for retailers, be that online or high street. So your assertions that people only go shopping for stuff they immediately need is wrong. And you know this by mentioning tat later on. Yes, only because commercialism has made it so

Im highlighting the many downfalls of you suggesting something. Thats not being salty its disagreeing with you. I agree the world wouldnt collapse. Youve assumed everyone celebrates christmas, which they dont, youve assumed everyone wants boxing day off, which seems apparent that whilst they might want time off they prefer being paid.

Many business do just that, and they make it work. When you compel business to do things it more often than not has unintended consequences which is what i think youve missed out thinking about here. As mentioned my OH works in retail, she always got what she wanted off. New years when we didnt have a child and Christmas when we did, make her shut on boxing day and its to the detriment of our childcare arrangements and needing to take holiday when not needed. I work in care, same thing applies, we need people to work over the period but do appreciate its the festive season, as such we ask preference and work to that.

You're making this a much bigger issue than it needs to be :rotfl: My OH also works in retail, he has opted in to work over NYE as he knows that other people will want it off. All I'm saying is that shops do not need to open, and that it's a good thing that Home Bargains is giving those workers extra time off at such a busy period

If the high street shops close.

I bet the online retailers will keep open.
  • Please explain how me going to see family is a burden on others?

I'm not forcing anything, just saying I think it would be a good idea. You're making that whole scenario up lol it's not going to happen. Who wouldn't want an extra day off? If they want to go shopping on Boxing day then I'm sure it's for something that they want that day, why would they shop online for something they would like that day and wait 2-3 days for it to arrive? Makes no sense to me.

Stop being salty because I think it's a good idea that a shop is closed over the Christmas period, the world is not going to collapse because people can't buy tat for a day. Where did I say anything about football? This is about retail. It should be up to the individual store, but if it was me I wouldn't put anyone on a rota, I would ask for volunteers if needs be.

Maybe spare a thought for people with no family who have had no contact with anyone since the shops shut Christmas Eve, going out into a warm bright environment and saying hello to a friendly shopkeeper might be as good as it gets for some. Of course as long as you can do what you want it doesn't matter does it.

I used to do rotas for Christmas working, some people are more than happy to work it for a variety of reasons. I've had people offer to work all over Christmas as they are travelling home in January and want some extra days or extra money, people of other faiths who would rather swap the days for something more appropriate to them or people who live alone, don't have anywhere to go and are happy to go into work and see people.

You just assume everyone is like you with the same needs and wants as you. No one is forced to go shopping on Boxing Day, if they didn't do it shops would shut but as it is people do want it and shops want there money so you will just have to suck it up.

Going to see your family could be a burden for a variety of reasons, do you drive? Maybe you could break down and need towing, maybe you could be in an accident and cause lots of work for lots of people, maybe you need petrol or maybe you don't drive and expect transport workers to work?

And if you don't have a family?

  • Do you think all shops should follow suit? Or do you think they should open for Boxing Day? :j

Shops should do as they see fit, why not have them open even on Christmas day if they wish so? If shoppers don't want to go, they won't. They're plenty of people who don't give a toss about Christmas and/or Boxing Day and perhaps would rather be working and earn some money.

And this is where you naivety shows. Im pretty sure its not extra time off for the staff, theyll just have one less holiday to take during the rest of the year.

We disagree, ill leave it at that. I was trying to offer reason and discussion but it seems apparent thats unwarranted from me.
