Sorting out a delinquent account

My wife has an account on her credit file which has been marked as 6 payments late for the last 2 years. No default notices received and the creditor is not chasing at present.
What is the best way of dealing with this? It seems a bit tricky to go to the lender and arrange a payment plan when they could then go ahead and mark it default, where instead of they update status o default now she could probably challenge it and get the default date changed to 6 months after her last payment

Make arrangements to pay it off.
If a default if preferable to an ongoing arrangement, then ask for that.0 -
Why not just pay the debt off? How much is the debt? How much is the arrears? With whom is the debt?
Edit: Darn it. Too slow again!!I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

Debt is about £800.
I guess the question is would it be bette to have a default dated 2 years ago, or have an arrangement to pay market on file for possibly another 6/12 months and then have another 6 years of that on record0 -
taking the advice from other threads i have submitted requests that these accounts are marked as defaulted at the correct date as provided by guidance from the ICO.
lets see what happens next0
