Big bird is asleep forever :(

She would show signs of recovering then go back downhill again so quickly. She wouldn't eat, barely drank any water and couldn't even eat her fave grape treats :( that was no quality of life for her so we popped off to the vet earlier on. They weren't poultry specialists so couldn't tell me what was wrong with her but agreed with me that she wasn't going to get any better. Next Wednesday we'd have had her for 4 years. She was the last of our original ladies.

New girls are all settling very well though so all is not lost :)

Thank you everyone, every one of you.

My Cayuga drake the one with the suspected broken neck had a massive fit and was uncontrollable so my hubby had to PHTS. He was bouncing everywhere. They do that sometimes if their heart is going 10 to the dozen. He actually leapt out of his night time cosy box and started fitting on the floor flapping everywhere. But his neck was still so we do believe it was broken. There was no way he could have lived like that but he was uncontrollable, bless his heart.

Now down to 2 only. The Indian runner is still traumatised but is eating and drinking ok and the small Cayuga still can not walk too well but doesn't appear stressed in any way. In fact she is quite calm compared to the Indian runner.

Both are spending time in the garden now under our close supervision. On our lawn and terrace where we can keep a close eye on them. We have carried them up to the pond to let them have a swim and a wash but stayed with them as the pond is up by their coop. Pingui the Indian is my Aviator by the way if you want to see her. The little Cayuga doesn't like the cold water much so doesn't splash about but just has a paddle around which is good for her legs. She still continues to walk a few steps and then plonks down. We are hoping the swimming will help her.

    So that's 2 left now :(

As if it's not bad enough when they go of natural causes, I can only imagine the heartbreak when they are wrenched away by another animal, :(:(:(

It's so very, very sad. :(:(:(

My heart goes out to anyone who has experienced that. :(:(

Aw Dizzy and Edwink, so sorry :( Dizzy, poor Big Bird, and the last of the original ladies too :( Glad your new ladies are settling in, but it's still sad that you lost her :(

And edwink, what a traumatic situation all round :(:(:( Fingers crossed for your remaining pair.

Tis indeed very sad - so much joy and so much heartbreak indeed.

My feathery nuisances have been an absolute menace today, following us back and forth, pecking our feet when we were standing talking to the farmer (and then pecking HIS feet too :rotfl: ), jumping in the house every time Mr Cheery brought something in from the garage, one hopped in the car while I was trying to get out of it. What a bunch! Wouldn't be without them though.

Rusty's feathers on her back and neck are properly growing back - they're quite bizarre, they're like little paintbrushes at the minute, a furled plasticy 'handle' and a little feathery tuft poking out of the top. The others are growing some feathers back but not as quickly or dramatically as her. I'm glad really - she was the baldest and scruffiest of the ladies so it's nice to think she'll fluff out a bit soon :)

We keep getting little birds trapped in the run  Clearly they've been in and out of there for months, but now we've put on the quarter inch mesh, they get in, then hide, and we shut the door, and don't notice til we go back. Not had one in overnight yet I don't think, but we regularly shut one in when we shut the ladies in the run (about 5pm at the minute), and it flies out indignantly when we go to tuck them into bed about 7. Not sure what we can do really other than try to check more thoroughly when we shut the ladies in - but we're usually too busy trying to stop them getting back out!

You are correct they always brought me so much joy and now sudden heartache, I adored all of them. They are funny little things at times with their own personalities which you get used to. If gardening I could often tell which one of them would be standing right behind me chirping and talking away to me. Some would take more handling/cuddling than others and some just walked around chirping happily on their own foraging and made other silly hen noises. For those that don't keep hens you would probably think a hens is just a hen but you would be pleasantly surprised how different each and everyone of them are.

My little man was the best ever, he really was and I absolutely adored him. If there was a scuffle going on I'd say Bertie go and sort it out and off he would go. We had such a good relationship, he trusted me and I trusted him which can be rare with Cockerels especially spending so much time around their girls because at the end of the day they are his girls and not mine. But, I always included him with hand feeding and built up his trust in no time. I'd spend hours and hours around them never getting bored of their company. I have Spondylosis in the top and bottom of my spine and some days it is dreadful painful but I always made the effort to go out and sit with them or walk amongst them. Checking they were all ok and exercising my bad back in the process. A match made in heaven I would say, they helped me and I helped them in return.

I actually feel quite traumatised myself now seeing what I had to see with them scattered all over the coop. It was awful and just resembled carnage but us humans I suppose just say ok we have this to deal with and its got to be done and hubby and I got on with it even though by then it was almost dark there was no way we could leave it until the following morning. We stayed up there soaked from the waist down from getting 2 of them out of the pond to safety indoors until it was all clean and raked up. We lit the coop up by four hanging strong LED torches so bright enough to make sure we left it clean. Its affected me badly to be honest. Loosing one at a time like I have done over the years I suppose you get used to it, its always sad but you harden to it over time over the years and it becomes less stressful if you understand what I mean but this was something else entirely. To loose 9 so brutally I find hard to accept and feel totally lost in myself without them. They were my world, everyone of them.

I bought a light up hanging pink heart to hang in their coop to remember them by which arrived today, hubby has just hung it up for me. Just something to shine a little light in the coop for them to be remembered by. Just something to remember those that we lost as the coop is now empty and eerie because we still have the two remaining ducks indoors with us for their safety.

I'm so down and feel so lost without them. I'm just so heart broken right now, I suppose its still very raw that's all.

    Oh Edwink!

I'm reaching for the tissues again. :(:(:(

    I wish I could take your pain away, but I can't. :(:(

Of, course they weren't 'just hens'. As you say, they are characters, each one unique. I loved hearing how your boy looked after his girls, and all the little quirks the girls had.

Crumbs, I mean, I managed to get attached to some stick insects I once had! Especially the baby ones. Even when they escaped and got stuck in the butter dish.

Even a brain-damaged sparrow I once found, and nursed for six weeks until it was well enough to go to a bird sanctuary....... it was going to a good place, but I had grown so attached to it, I cried.

They sort of become your babies, don't they?
