Issues with final pay

My brother recently had a good job offer which he accepted and will be starting this Monday.
Unfortunately his previous employer has been nothing but immature and petty since he handed his resignation. They deliberately gave a bad reference, which the new employer obviously ignored given his other references were good. He was going to let most of it slide until he received details regarding his final pay.
They deducting £115 for uniform, but he says that a full uniform was never issued. Only part of the uniform which amounts to £50 based on the current costs and that's being generous for a shirt, tie and jumper I think.
They are also deducting approximately £400 for training costs. He says that apart from a 10 min induction to the company, no training has ever been given.
How would you best advise we approach this?

What was his job? Seems odd than any role would come with no more than 10 minutes' worth of training...0

Security Guard/Officer.
The roles are the same 99% of the time, just a different client/site you attend each shift usually.0 -
Is he in a union ?0
