A man in our walking group puts his flask in an old walking sock to keep it a bit warmer. I have one of those thermal sleeves meant for keeping wine cold on a picnic-might try my flask in that to see if it keeps heat in.

Wonder if a cold bag thingy (I have one of those little ones that look like a handbag) would hold heat IN if the flask fits, and I tucked it in with a microwaved heat pack.....that's definately worth an experiment!

I have a Thermos travel mug, thats fully sealable, which keeps the coffee I make at 7am still scorching hot at 2pm!
I've had some duff flasks in the past, but now I've found this amazing one I'm guarding it with my life!!

We have one of the unbreakable Stanley flasks, and if we go out for the day, we fill it with Earl Grey tea, which Mr LW can happily drink without milk (I don't have milk in my tea at all, I dislike it, and this means not mucking about with a separate container of milk for him) and we take a picnic of some sort.

Mr LW would be quite happy to find a nice eatery, but I have issues with eating amongst strangers so it's better for us to find a nice quiet corner away from everyone else and enjoy our food in relative privacy.

I refuse point blank to even consider C0$ta; well named, cos coffee there does cost a fortune! :D

I am fortunate to get free tea and coffee and mineral water at work (there's hot choc and Bovril too, but I don't like them).

From Tues I intend taking a packed lunch everyday. I am bad at remembering and though there's a cheap(ish) canteen on site it's a got a limited menu and not overly healthy and when buger and chips at £3 is cheaper than a salad at £3.50, it doesn't encourage healthier choosing. I will still support the canteen though and have their special (around £3.50) on a Friday, as it's more convenient to me to have a hot main meal at lunchtime that day. DH says he also wants to take his lunch in.

One of DS's Christmas presents from us was a Stanley food flask. The idea being that at college and when/if he goes to Uni, it is something he can use then to keep meals cheaper for him. I chose the Stanley brand as it was recommended by my Dad who takes his stanley flask when he goes clay pigeon shooting.

I agree pub lunches that are frequently on 2 for £x, are cheaper than a coffee and snack, but I'm becoming very aware how many are frozen and just either microwaved or put in the fryer. My fav coffee shop to visit is an Independant closest to me. They have a loyalty card which means every 7th maybe 8thhot drink is free. At the same time they have a daily happy hour where al take away hot drinks are £1.50, so sometimes on my days off I get one of these and let the loyalty card build up and then use the freebie for a sit in more expensive drink.

We have family and friends round tonight as it's our turn to host a NYE party, so we have done extra grocery shopping today, but just topped up what we already had in on both the alcohol and mixer drinks as well as the food.

One of my problems is because I have to follow a fairly strict grain free diet most coffee shops don’t have suitable eats for me......sandwiches, cakes etc I usually take a nutty bar type snack with me. No one has ever complained to me.

If I’m not in the mood for a pub or proper restaurant lunch or if I’m pushed for time then I find a full English breakfast works well for me......a lot of places do them all day and they cost no more than a coffee and muffin. I just tell them to skip the toast.

I have been in a few cafes where there was just nothing suitable for me to eat but when I explained they were happy to rustle up an omelette for me. Unfortunately the Costa type places can’t do that, it usually has to be an independent.

Over the last few years I spent weeks/months at a time visiting loved ones in hospital. It always astonishes me that the eating places in hospitals generally serve such dreadfully unhealthy food. It’s not just the visitors who need to buy food. I feel so sorry for the staff who need to buy a meal there.

I know they are subsidised for staff (one kind hospital used to let me have the same discount when my husband was in for a four month stretch) but even so some days the menu was very poor and very expensive for what was on offer - even with the discount.

My dad died on 30th December last year. He was in hospital all over the Christmas period. The canteen was shut for the entire time. It was Costa, the M&S shop, vending machines or nothing.

Not much sustenance for medics doing 12 hour shifts......

I've been reading the thread and loving all of the ideas, particularly flasks and pic nics, a passion of mine. I have three flasks, one thermos food, one small supermarket drinks and a larger drinks. I use the small drinks one at work and tend to take in an herbal tea, made in a heated flask at 6:00 and usually still piping at 2:00. I've never waited longer to drink it. The food flask isn't quite as effective. I think it works better with liquids like soup rather than things like pasta bake. I do sometimes use our canteen, but this term only bought lunch once.

We generally take a flask if we're going on a NT adventure, not only to save pennies but the cafes are usually rammed and hectic and the coffee not as nice as ours. I take pack ups as well--we're planning one next week and I've already been plotting the lunch. A sweet potato and butternut soup we ate last night has plenty left over for the flask and I'll make a spinach quiche tomorrow and half of that will go. I'll also bung an apple cake with cinnamon topping in the oven and we'll have that. I may put hot choc rather than coffee in the drinks flask for a change.

We do buy some things out--lunches/coffees etc. particularly when in town. Sometimes we need the break and I often need the facilities after bringing my own water with me and those that are publicly available can be few and far in some places.

FROZEN CHEESE HAM: (sorry to shout, didn't want it to be missed in my rambling) if they don't come out as nice as you'd hoped you could always turn them into toasties, should rescue them nicely!

The newer unbreakable thermos products are fantastic. I have a 1.2l thermos king and I use that if I think there could be a power cut, 8 hours later, the water inside is still hot enough to burn. I have a small thermos food flask and a thermos travel mug, which unbelieveably keeps a drink very hot for a very long time.

I also have a very strong metal cool box by stanley, there is an indent on top and straps to hold a vac flask. Never used but I do remember buying at a lakeland sale, much reduced. The vac flask is `hook line and sinker`. Reading about the cool box just now, it is highly insulated and doubles as a seat. This is going to be useful :)when I start using my lifelong NT card. Another item that I put under the stairs and it was out of sight so became out of mind. It is going to save me money and is so robust that I`ll be able to leave it in my will :D

I am going to join the NT after my holiday. I will take a flask for if I’m just walking around the estates or parks but when I visit the houses I will probably treat myself in the cafe......

Hi folks. I am loving this thread, and picking up a few tips. LL - Don't forget my tip for joining the National Trust, you don't have to live in Scotland to join the National Trust for Scotland for £38 a year by Direct Debit - and they have reciprocal arrangements with National Trust for England and Wales.

lovely to see you here John :)

New year and a new start, nothing overwhelming, just little comfortable steps

Today I am tackling tea, I have been a secret tea buff for a few years, tiny chinese tea cups, tiny tea pots and ceremony items, raw and fermented compressed tea balls and lots of other specialist teas, often in small expensive airtight pouches. Today I am doing the tea sort and will be ensuring I make that bit more `effort` to drink them. They are `beautiful` unusual and expensive teas, not the tetleys or yorkshires which I keep for visitors. At the moment I am having the first infusion from an old (the older the better) raw tea ball. A quick swill in a small glass teapot and a 5 second infuse and now in an English china cup and saucer next to me. Tastes of smokey apricots and this tea will infuse five more times and will look lighter each time. It is a secret pleasure, no-one gets to share any of it

I also have the usual herb teas, ayurvedic teas and tea pig teas but too many teas but they are not going out, I do share these more common teas, maybe not the ayurvedic ones

So yesterday, I broke my journey home and went into a village shop not far away and almost bought yorkshire tea. Why? I don`t know, something to buy, as though buying releases endorphins. I think it does. So now I know what caused my spending, I can do something about it. Starting by re-reading my wonderful book about teas and later I will have a matcha tea, instead of a coffee and day one of 2018, credit card is plus £2.81 ie it is better than zero and that is a wonderful start :D

Organising myself well so far :D
I'm still drowning in laundry, hopefully the last will be cleared away by this afternoon.
Making use of the best ever gift my mother gives me each year of a calendar with all the families special occasions written in, half the time I don't know what day it is never mind the date, so I rounded up all the odd cards I have brought stuck in a safe place and promptly forgotten and had to repurchase.
These have been written out cash added where required and filed with the stuff I go into regularly to remind me I'm covered to May and will pick up the rest of the years cards this week and do the same.
Finally talked DH into changing his contact sim card into PAYG saving £5 a month we already run quite a tight budget but the saving covers his Evo magazine subscription a year or a weeks shopping so I'm more than happy.
Happy New Year everyone, hopefully not too many hangovers from using up all the alcohol :D
