Successful Reclaim of Mis-sold Building Insurance from 2001

<div>Hi,</div><div><br></div><div>I thought that I would share the story of my successful reclaim of mis-sold insurance from 2001.</div><div><br></div><div>In 2001 I purchased a flat which was my first property with a mortgage from Halifax.<br><br>I was told that as a condition of the mortgage, I had to take out buildings and contents insurance with Halifax Home insurance and as the property had a flat, felt roof, only Halifax Insurance would cover this.  I took out the policy which was sold to me.<br><br>When the insurance policy was due for renewal, I received a call from Halifax Insurance telling me that a condition of my mortgage was to renew my buildings and contents insurance with Halifax Insurance.  I renewed the policy which was sold to me.<br><br>I sold the property in 2003 and closed the policy.<br><br>Although the property did have a flat felt roof, I did not need buildings insurance as it was a leasehold flat with the leaseholder insuring the building.  Furthermore, I believe that I could have found insurance cheaper elsewhere if I had been allowed to source alternative cover.</div><div><br></div><div>A few mnths ago, despite having no paperwork, reference numbers or even proof I had paid the premiums, I complained to Halifax using <a href="https://www.resolver.co.uk/">Resolver</a><img name="kl_1527843121102" style="width: 12px; height: 12px;" src="data:image/png;base64,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" width="12" height="12"> (<a href="https://www.resolver.co.uk/">www.resolver.co.uk</a><img name="kl_1527843121102" style="width: 12px; height: 12px;" src="data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABAAAAAQCAYAAAAf8/9hAAAACXBIWXMAAAsSAAALEgHS3X78AAAB3ElEQVQ4jY2TPWhTURTH/+e8l7QNJg0qCJpCSdEnONTFDk5udfILs9mS6iJYpI4VnURXUcRJrFG3gm3tXLpIxaUUIVA/iLRJayQ2Nk1q7cu99zjUF/JhQv7jOff/O+fcwyERAQAQEaoVjsdOirgP93L+W5svJpeq8xVfPWD/yPkepekBWbjETl8nM0h9XtkRV72xLbmdn5hJ/xdw4OaVkC6U7oBwg6MRH0d7fGTbQDoLIYKUXa2/rO5C6SdWOHh/4/HrLQCwvZZUoZi2Dh/ysdPbRZ0dNeOQCMj2WXTiaMCUtsdUKn0dQHcNAEZCVr+DViJjYAW6/NqI34txS0eVIqEwRgfONMTbApyORDE3PIbF9dX2AKPHTyESCFbMExeGMTL9EguZVHuAxY3vmBscwtkjfS3NTQELuQzi72bwaGAQ8elEUzNQtQUiLsmf3X3eCt/n1uBMPQUy2bqSDCIuNXQgjHnJ5kzTUt47rUQY8w0AG2ZcLX/bkc2t5m5mlJdTv22Y8QZAPjGbBPHl8oePRb2yruu9BjBu8msRGrF8YjZZGb3+mA5ePee4ip9xoKOfj/UGSRuYtR/b+ldxyW/paz+fv/0EtLhGT91DF2NgubtXnu4VXk1N1vzFP99f037PUFbu4yIAAAAASUVORK5CYII=" width="12" height="12">).<br></div><div><br></div><div>I received a number of letters from Halifax saying that they were investigating the claim including one advising that I could take he claim to the Financial Ombudsman Service as their investigation lasted more than 8 weeks.</div><div><br></div><div>Eventually I received a response from Halifax with a settlement payment of £297 comprising of:</div><div><br></div><div><ul><li>£108.63 - a premium refund I paid between 2001 and 2003 for Buildings insurance</li><li>£141.70 - 8% interest on the premium</li><li>£50.00 - for the incorrect information I was given at the point of sale.</li><li>£25 - recognition of the delay in responding to my claim</li></ul></div><div>£28.34 was deducted from my interest as tax charged at the basic rate of 20%.  I will be able to claim this back at the end of the financial year.</div><
