Soundproofing experiences

Hi,
We live in a 1930s semi and are considering soundproofing the party wall in the bedroom. We can hear everyday airborne noise through it - talking (muffled, but still more audible than we’d like), coughing etc. We also hear impact noise like footsteps etc, but these are very muffled and don’t bother us.
We have a chimney and alcoves either side. In the alcove furthest away from our bed we have a wardrobe, and I think the sound is louder from the alcove which has nothing in front of it.
We’re considering the M20 sheets, plus 2 layers of soundproofing plasterboard, via https://www.soundstop.co.uk/ and doing it ourselves rather than via a soundproofing company, as their prices are eye watering. Has anyone used them? We’re also thinking that we’d just do the two alcoves rather than the chimney breast (for one thing it would make it stick out too much and we’d have trouble fitting our bed in)
Any advice, dos, don’ts - has soundproofing worked for you??

Not much point in only doing the alcoves either side as the chimney breast will be where most of the sound is travelling.
Note the soundproofing won't do much for the "impact" noise.
What's the wall, brick? Might be worth packing out any timber walls internally as well with Rockwool or similar.0 -
Thanks, yes they are brick.
Hmmm not sure what to do about chimney as adding 10cm onto it will seriously reduce the room size. It's all blocked up and plastered over so there wouldn't be noise coming through a fireplace etc.0 -
I would have assumed that the chimney breast would be the best at reducing sound from next door. Certainly is in our home.0
