Went into one of the Hospice shops in our town and spotted a White Stuff top. It was well worn and a bit washed out and they wanted £9.50 for it .
I left it for someone else to enjoy!!!Normal people worry me.0 -
DD bought yet another coat yesterday, it is a St Michael trenchcoat, traditional style with vent at back, shoulder thingies (can't spell that word), buckle belt and buckle cuffs, plaid lining. They were asking £7.50 for it but I noticed some marks and there were no washing instructions so I asked the manager if she could budge and we got it for £5.Debt Free and now a saver, conscious consumer, low waste lifestyler

Well after rather a long drought I picked up some great bargains this week.
Large silver coloured mirror, Brand new £10. Would easily retail at around £100. Perfect for my hall. Two little seaside prints 99p each, two tops on bogoff so £1.50 for the two.
My DiL is due her first baby in July (my first grandchild). She will not countenance anything pre-loved (hopefully she will learn the error of her ways:rotfl:). In the meantime I will not be buying any clothes or equipment for my grandchild because I would be just wasting my money. I will set up a modest trust fund instead.
TBH I am a tad concerned about how much money she is throwing
At this baby (as she did for the wedding) but I am keeping my own counsel on this. As her MIL and not her own mum, I think it is better if I maintain a diplomatic silence. :rotfl:0 -

I do not understand people's squeamishness about second hand, nor some people's insistence that they HAVE to buy everything new (in general, not just with babies). For a start, I would end up in masses of debt if I even tried to buy it all new. But I guess that's what a lot of people do - since I noticed when Toys R Us were closing down, that people had payment plans on stuff. And we know people do that in life generally, and then come on here trying to learn how to shift it all. I'm sorry, but that's never been my mindset - I was bought up by wartime parents and my Grandparents were equally as thrifty. I have just learnt from them (though the same cannot be said of my brother, so how that works when we were brought up the same, I don't know!) But I always saved, and he always had a hole in his pocket.
As if a baby is going to know whether stuff is new or not. And in a matter of weeks, much of this stuff will be useless and the second hand market is so over-run with baby gear (from what I've seen by looking/ buying) that most of it sells for next to nothing, if at all. And it's practically new, some of it is new! Parents are literally begging someone to take it off their hands.
Sure, there was a point when I got a little fed up of having to wash and clean everything. SO many loads of washing, but let's face it- putting stuff through a washing machine is nothing compared to my Grandparents generation. So I cannot complain. A few things like the pushchair/pram had to be washed down by hand.
I still bought new mattresses for everything, but I paid for it all with vouchers from online earning sites, so I don't really count it as spending.
We have asked for no-one to give us stuff. I can't comprehend people spending stupid amounts of money on baby stuff, plus we don't need it as I either sourced it free or for next to nothing. I would much rather set up a bank account for baby's future. But I doubt everyone will stick to that. But I don't have any shame about returning things or selling them on straight away! lolMinimalist

Just been to a small local market town that's 'upmarket' the CS I've used before now specialises in baby and kiddiewear - full rails and plenty of mums in there. I tried the local hospice shop and found a pretty cashmere cardi but at £20 decided I could live without itSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0
