How long should it take to process a refund?

Options
It took the merchant over 2 years to do the refund, does s 56(4) of the consumer rights act 15 mean it should take about 14 days?

Any thoughts appreciated.

It would normally be slightly quicker than 2 years. But there may be more to the story.

It was a mistake that neither you nor the company picked up on. End of story.

What's the purpose behind your question? If they still hadn't done the refund then you could pursue them through the courts. You can't do that now you've got the money.

Because companies are run by people, and people make mistakes?

Even if it was written in law that they had to refund you within a certain timeframe it would be a civil matter not a criminal one and your only recourse would be to take them to court to get your refund. Now that you have your refund there is nothing to take action against them for so it's irrelevant whether or not the refund should have been processed sooner.

How can consumers be sure that the company made a simple mistake?

By doing what normal people do and checking their accounts. Checking 2 years later isn't normal.

Okay you’re right, they owe you £100 compensation for not refunding you within a reasonable time frame.

You owe them £100 compensation for not noticing in a reasonable time frame.

and some companies are sometimes fined large amounts by regulators for ‘mistakes’, you’d’ve thought they’d’ve more people checking for mistakes?

Maybe you think like that....others not so much.

Pity there's no regulator for quick refunds eh?

    Move on.

Still not clear what the OP is after.

Are you trying to see if you qualify for compo?

I don't think it would be considered reasonable but since neither party noticed and it's now been corrected, it's an academic argument.

If you had noticed sooner, taken action and they didn't refund you, you would have won any small claims action (assuming you were entirely justified to the refund). That's what it would have taken to test the rules, so to speak.
