    Good news for us as husband's annual season ticket is more than annual mortgage payments.

    His tip is to renew in December not January so your rise is always a year behind.

    I have a simple question for the train operating companies and the government. What do they actually do with the extra money, raised by increasing fares above inflation could they please explain?

    Well to start off with staff get pay rises and some of the money goes towards those. Also,as with everything in life, the costs rise(outside of wages) from track access charges to fuel charges and so on and so forth - they all rise, every year without fail. And investment in new trains and track also gets a chunk of the money.

    But thats not to say all the money goes towards these things.

    Yes Nessie that's right, and indeed and other capital items (stations as well as train sets, and upgrades). They will recover more of the money by increasing non standard fares (eg 'advanced purchase' and rail card fares) Some companies may have to do this drastically or may just hand back the franchise ( as did National Travel) if the Government does not compensate them. It's a vote catching gimmick really for London commuters the squeezed middle :-)
