question about rent going up

I cannot pay the rent increase served on me today. I already get the maximum help and pay a little bit myself towards it.

Should i tell the landlord i cant pay and hope they accept it or should i go and ask for a discretionary payment from the council? What are my chances of getting it at this time of year and for how long would it go on?

Is there a best time to apply for it?

Thanks.

  • This is worth a read, make sure it's all been done correctly: http://www.tenancyagreementservice.co.uk/rent-increases.htm

Aside from that, if all is above board with the notice, then contact your landlord (in writing!) explaining the situation. You have a few possible options:

    • Explain that you cannot afford any increase.
    • Offer a smaller increase in rent that you can afford.
    • Accept the increase.

You could also outline in the letter how you've been a tenant for X months/years, always paid on time, never caused a problem etc etc.

A good sitting tenant is what a landlord wants most over a few extra quid per month rent.

    Good luck!

Could you move to a cheaper place?
