What are you using it for? No need to throw it away, just put linux on it. You have nothing to lose as it's free. I suggest xubuntu or manjaro. No need to run any antivirus either as linux is a secure operating system.

Don't you get bored of yourself? The same thing on every thread?

I have read through that thread and am thinking of getting my courage up to have a go. Might experiment on my own desktop too - it’s a PC specialist one with something odd about it, as the free windows 10 upgrade was difficult and it doesn’t like the latest windows 10 update.

It will be a while before I go into the charity office. I think the computer there is a Lenovo (it is a laptop).

In the meantime could someone point me to a set of instructions for how to fit an SSD? Is it possible on a laptop? As I remember it, the charity laptop has minimal RAM and a slow processor. If we can save money by installing an SSD, I want to go for it. Ditto for my own desktop. Equally I am not tech savvy and have no practical skills, so instructions have to be idiot proof.

Would need full model details. Would you know which car I drove if I told you that I had a Ford?
You don't need to be tech savvy. You just need to be able to pay attention to detail.

Part of that would be to impart the full model details, so that we know exactly with what we are dealing.

PC should be easy. Laptop depends on the model/design. Some very easy, some more fiddly.

Once we know the model, can put together a guide.

As Windows 7 wouldn't be supported by Microsoft from January 2020, the updates, etc will be stopped. I know I can still use my PC but at risk.

I always had and will continue to use my Kaspersky Internet Security up to date. I also use uOrigin to block ads.

Is it safe to use my PC with antivirus program or do I need to look for new hardware (PC or Laptop)?

    Thanks

Of course you can install Windows 10 to it. Core2Duo still capable of running Windows 10 with ease. Though I would run a clean install as opposed to an over the top upgrade.

I think on every thread in here there is someone who suggests every problem is fixed by Linux, and there is also someone who thinks every problem can be fixed with an SSD.
(Although I could be wrong, I often am.)

Support for Windows 7 from Microsoft ends on Jan 14th 2020.
Windows will continue to run, as before. Any other software you have will continue to run, as before. Continue to keep your AV software and firewall etc up to date.

Over time, new security bugs will emerge in Windows 7 that may NOT be fixed by Microsoft. These may be subject to attempted exploits. In Jan 2020 there will be a rash of scams, hoaxes and spoofs about Windows 7.

Hold your nerve and keep running Windows 7. In time you may need a new PC or a piece of software that requires Windows 10 - that is the time to move.

That is very kind. Thank you. I won't be in the office until late next week at the earliest (the 'office' is just a shared desk) but will get full details then.

I agree with the first part of your post , but why did you spoil it with 'holding your nerve' when it is free and easy to upgrade to Windows 10 ?

As you suggested in your post, security holes that get discovered in the OS which wont be patched are bad. This cannot be mitigated with any kind of AV software

The OP already has an SSD fitted. Having an HDD as a Boot drive really holds back the performance of almost any PC. Definitely a step forward and recommended to anyone needing to replace a faulty HDD.
Recommending Linux when someone asks about Windows 10 is a bit weird....

How many people have you seen follow his advice and report back that they were happy with their Linux install?
How many people report back as to how happy there are with their new SSD?
You must have been hiding, as I haven't seen you solve any problems around here.....ever.

The one downside to running older but perfectly good hardware is that the older the machine is, the less likely there is to be drivers available for W10. I've had to return several older machines to W7 (under which they ran just dandy) when the next W10 update has caused problems, often with sound and wifi cards being the first to suffer.

If you DO change an older machine over to W10, make sure you've got a disk image from when it was all working under W7 to revert to if you need to at a later date ;)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Please could you let me know what is in bold (disk image)?

    Thanks
