Although always using moneysavingexpert.com first time to chat.

Our contents/buildings insurance is due for renewal soon. Changed to Halifax last year via moneysupermarket - not the cheapest but mortgage with them as well and saved £250.00 in process.

This year they want £235.24 but online for same cover £161.61. So we phoned them and they said "How did you manage to get such a cheap quote, as an existing customer you should have been barred". Surely this is unlawful - Unfair Competition or Unfair Terms.

The best their customer service person could offer was £197.55.

So shoiuld we stop existing policy on last day and take out new policy with same company but for £73.63 less OR change provider out of disgust and save even more OR go for option 1 and report Halifax to OFT/FSA and see what their own senior management think?

What "georgeone" says seems to make sense, BUT, I would like to see what he thinks of the total BODGERY performed by an "approved " builder appointed by Cunningham Lindsey, the loss adjusters for Norwich Insurance, on a neighbours house.
You would be appalled at the way they did the general repairs following a genuine subsidence. The specialist foundation contractor was fine, but the approved builders were incompetent, lazy, and skimped on the schedule wherever they thought they could get away with it. The managers just fudged the issue, because they were all in it together, and thought the customers were stupid.

Then tell the Insurance company about it! Seriously, we do not get enough complaints from customers about builders, and we cannot do anything about them until people tell us. Cunninghams arnt just Norwich Unions LA's either, there a general overflow provider for alot of companies.

Hi, I have home contents insurance. The circuit board, on my central heating boiler, needs replaced and it's going to cost a lot. How can I make a claim on my insurance company? I know how sneaky they can be.

I work for and insurance company as part of their technical claims team, and to be honest even without looking at your policy properly, I doubt it.

You would have to argue that the boiler is a content in the first place (its a buildings item, as it is a fixed water installation, in the same way bathroom suites are buildings)

You would then have to prove that the damage was as a result of an operating cause- i.e. it is one of the list of perils. Given that they are normally Storm, Fire, AD, Escape of water/Oil.

A buildings/contents policy generally covers damage from outside sources (in very broad terms) and NOT wear and tear, which is what this is. Nothing sneaky about it at all, as you have not paid for that sort of cover.

Hi there, our buildings and contents was due for renewal in Feb and TEsco were the cheapest at £357 - just read Martin's newsletter and call up to see what the cancellation charge would be. At the moment Tesco are suppossed to be offering 50% off home insurance!!!! On line quote like for like was £288.
so I would question if they really are offering 50% off.

Anyway, because I was taking out a new policy they agreed not to charge me anything but pro rata my money back from the first policy and then I took the other one out via the internet.

Saved £69 for my insurance and got two extra months cover free!

    I love this site.

Does anyone know of a good (preferably cheap) insurer for houses in an area liable to flooding? I've only had a small amount of water -damage once in 14 years, and that was caused by people driving through the water on the road too fast and making waves, but I can't 'agree' on quotes that I am NOT in an area that is liable to damage. Can anybody help ? Present insurer is Halifax, not a bad price last year but I was very unhappy with the way they dealt with my claim. They apologised but I would rather change if I can.
I love this site too, it has saved me lots since I discovered it !
