Are your documents any safer with a third party than kept in a fireproof safe at home? Barclays Bank managed to lose my father's will.

Would anybody, in their right mind, entrust anything to any bank.

(Respect to you, and to your Father's decision, that he thought that thas was the right thing to do at that time.)

Who said anything about a fireproof safe. That costs money!!
My original will and deeds for my cottage are encased in a lead box in a strong box, under my garden. (Always checked to ensure integrity)
It's really in some ways making sure that YOU have CONTROL.

I may be older, but I have not got to the stage of putting my cash under the bed, YET.

We very recently redeemed our house deeds from Abbey National .deedsave service. They charged us £65+vat to set it up and £95+vat to release them.Racketeers the lot of them.

When we finished paying off our Abbey National mortgage, they kindly paid for our solicitor to finish off paperwork involved in obtaining deeds.

They did this because they were so embarassed at the service they'd provided when we had switched mortgages (internally within Abbey National, from variable rate to discounted rate) a few months before.

They sent the wrong paperwork and tried to charge us for things we'd already paid for !

I don't think it was down to racketeering though, just sheer incompetence!

    :p

The solicitor now looks after the deeds free of charge.
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way.

They now have to communicate with a much more educated social group. But do these institutions learn.
    No.
