You can be not allowed to drive without having to surrender your licence: after my particular brain surgery I wasn't allowed to drive for a set period, but I was not required to surrender my licence.

So as long as you're not driving when you shouldn't, that's not a problem.

However, if you are required to surrender your licence, then I think you are supposed to send it back. Who enforces that I'm not sure but in some situations they will review whether or not you should still be driving, and if they ask for it back then they would enforce that. FIL has to renew his licence each year and each time they check with his various specialists.

That's what I thought too, but halfway down this page on gov.uk it says "You must surrender your licence to DVLA if your doctor tells you to stop driving because of your medical condition"

Well, it's all a long time ago, but mine was post surgery - and there are a number of surgeries which require you to refrain from driving! I guess that's a bit different to a 'medical condition'.

I can't remember all the details, but there was a set period following my particular brain surgery when I was definitely not allowed to drive, just as you can't after a caesarean section. And when I'd catastrophically broken my shoulder, the chap at the fracture clinic did check I wasn't driving.

I received notification on the 24th November 14 informing me that my driving entitlement had been taken away on medical grounds.....For the next 3 week I bombarded the DVLA with e-mails and phone calls ,Even made complaint to the CEO ...Guess what I got on the 20.12.14 a brand new shiney driving licence ....Happy day`s
Moral of the story is keep on at them and keep on some more it worked for me

The DVLA sent me a letter saying "thankyou for informing us that you're no longer fit to drive", (I hadn't), and to return my licence in the envelope provided: "it's now illegal for you to drive".

As soon as hey had my licence they insisted that I had not been prohibited from driving, that my licence to drive was still valid, and that returning my licence had been optional not compulsory. They still refused to give it back in the interim whilst they spent the next four months deciding on my fitness to drive though, they also refused to confirm in writing what they were telling me on the phone.

If you read most of their information it's deliberately ambiguous so that they can have their cake and eat it: if you quit driving it's your own choice not theirs, but if you don't quit you're the one liable for prosecution.

Help me speed this process up!
My provisional license was provoked! As I missed ONE letter during the eye sight test (reading the number plate) before my practical drivers test.
2 weeks later I got a letter stating that I have no driving entitlement, and that I would need to re apply for a license. This was not explained to me by the examiner, so I had managed to book another test which I had to cancel.
On the same day of me failing the eyesight test I went and got new glass which came within a week, I got the forms and reapplied for my license within the same week showing prof of my visual eyesight result from specsavers. I waited 5 weeks constantly phoning to ask questions, and then I received a letter saying i had to take another eye sight test, making it seem like specsavers wasn't good enough. They said it would take up to 6 weeks to fit me in for the test, so I decided to phone my local test centre and the manager of Croydon driving centre fitted me in with 3 days notice!
Obviously I passed and he said he would have the information over to dvla within 15minutes, it's nearly been a week and so I phoned dvla and now I have to wait up to 9 weeks for them to say my licence is back.
But the thing is they never took my license or counterpart, so all they have to do is change my driving status online.
I have waited nearly 3 months yet I acted so quickly to sort out my glass and my form. These people are meant to be working for us not against us!! What can I do?

Hi. This hasn't changed so the DVLA obviously hasn't caught up on its backlog.
I applied nearly 2 months ago as the DVLA advised me to, and they did nothing with my application until last week.
I have just been told it will take another 11 weeks to process. This effectively means my licence has been taken off me, not for the normal 12 months, but for a ridiculous 15 months!
I didn't understand a comment another user made - I voluntarily surrendered my licence by informing the DVLA of a medical issue, they revoked my licence for 12 months. But no I can not drive whilst investigations are made.
It is incredibly frustrating as I know they have all the medical information from my consultant saying I am fine to drive and this extra 3 month delay is simply DVLA administrative problems! Why are disabled people being penalised for being good drivers and reporting medical conditions like they are supposed to? It's ridiculous.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on the 2nd Feb this year. I contacted the dvla to inform they promptly revoked my group 2 category d bus licence and told me I had to reapply for it after 3 months. It's now 11 months later. My blood sugars are fine, I do not suffer from hypos normally and if I do I am fully aware and self treat. I have a gp's letter to say I am fit to drive, a consultants letter to say I am fit to drive and I have also passed 2 dvla independent medicals. Still no licence...... They have to be the most frustrating organisation in the world to deal with. The most frustrating thing for me is that Everytime you letter them letters or paperwork it takes 2-3 weeks to scan it into their computer system. What are they using? Commodore Amiga's?

Having been diagnosed with Epilepsy in May 2015 and then being seizure free for 12 months I re-applied for my driving licence back at the end of April 2016 (you can re-apply up to eight weeks before the 12 months is up). My case and all supporting medical documentation was entered as received by the DVLA medical team on June 1st 2016. By 24th June I was told that my case had been reviewed by a Supervisor and only then had been passed to a doctor in the medical section to review.
However I was told that the medical team doctors were currently working on cases from 24th November 2015 :mad::mad::mad: So in essence I have to wait nearly 7 months for the doctors to look at me application. This is an unbelievable attitude and response time offered by the DVLA Medical team. Come on get real what are you supposed to do for another 7 months without a car - their response was pathetic to say the least. Even worse in 7 months time when my case is doctor reviewed they may ask for more medical information and the delay could be 12 months :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
Come on DVLA this is not a service its a f****** disgrace. My life and sanity is at stake here !!!!!!!!!
