The RTS genre is sadly mostly dead these days as it's been mostly killed off by MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games such as League of Legends even though they're quite different.

Starcraft 2 is an older game these days but the base game is free to play and it's similar to the Command and Conquer games so I think it's worth a look if you haven't played it.

Grey Goo is a more recent RTS and the developer is made up of ex-Westwood employees although I still haven't tried it even though I bought it a while ago. The same developer also made 8-bit armies which is a simple RTS meant to be similar to the original Command and Conquer but I didn't really get into it.

If you haven't played the original Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War, I'd recommend that despite its age as I'd say it's still the best of the three. The second game went for a different style focusing on small squad tactics and the third tried to cross over with a MOBA which frustratingly made it a weaker RTS game and not a very good MOBA either. The first game however went for a C&C style with the usual base building and a good variety of units particularly the Soulstorm addon which gives a wide choice of armies and fairly complex tech trees.
