    Second Purse Challenge 2012

Second Purse Challenge 2012 20th Jan 12 at 12:27 PM
I thought I'd compile a thread for anyone wanting to start motherships second purse system as a challenge

If you wish to sign up then state what your dream item that you will buy with your saved 's will be and how much it costs. I will allocate you a number and as your 3rd purse grows I will update the total until you post to say that you have achieved your dream item and would like to set a 2nd dream item as your next target

    How the 2nd purse works:

    Second purse example spreadsheet

If you'd like to do the 2nd purse challenge it's really quite simple and you can start small. You can even download a copy of the above spreadsheet for your own use, or use your own or even paper and pen.

For this to work effectively, imagine you are two people, firstly a shopkeeper, secondly a customer. Your 2nd purse is the shop till, your 1st purse is your grocery budget, the 3rd purse is the cash office where the money is stored when there's too much in the till before being spent or saved.
This is how the 2nd Purse works 1st Month
Add 10. Spend 10 on offers B1G1F or Half Price.
    Your Stock is worth 20.
You use 5 worth, that’s what you pay back, your stock is worth 15

    2nd Month
Add 10 to the 5 you paid back, you now have 15 to spend on offers.
Spend 15, your stock is now worth 45
If you use 10 worth, and pay that back when you get paid.
You will have 10 in 2nd Purse. 35 of stock

    3rd Month
Add 10 to the 10 you paid back, you now have 20 to spend on offers.
Spend 20 , your stock is now worth 75
If you use 20 worth, and pay it back when you get paid.
You will have 20 in 2nd Purse. 55 of stock

    4th Month
Add 10 to the 20 you paid back, you now have 30 to spend on offers.
Spend 30 , your stock is now worth 115
If you use 25 worth, and pay it back when you get paid
You will have 25 in 2nd Purse . 90 of stock

    5th Month
Add 10 to the 25 you paid back , you now have 35 to spend on offers.
Spend 35, your stock is now worth 160
If you use 30 worth , and pay it back when you get paid
You will have 30 in 2nd Purse. 130 in stock.

    6th month
Add 10 to the 30 you paid back. You now have 40 to spend on offers
Spend 40, your stock is now worth 210
If you use 40 worth, and pay it back when you get paid.
You will have 40 in 2nd Purse. 170 in stock.

    7th month
Add 10 to the 40 you paid back. You now have 50 to spend on offers
Spend 50, your stock is now worth 270
If you use 50 worth, and pay it back when you get paid.
You will have 50 in 2nd Purse. 220 in stock

    8th month
Add 10 to the 50 you paid back. You now have 60 to spend on offers
Spend 60, your stock is now worth 340
If you use 60 worth, and pay it back when you get paid.
You will have 60 in 2nd Purse. 280 in stock.

I think this is the easiest way to show how the 2nd Purse works, you don’t always spend all money in the 2nd Purse every month. So I’ve not allowed for that, or that some of you already had a good starting stock.
The 2nd Purse is the working part of the idea, don’t be afraid to spend this on bargains. Let it flow.
I know some of you don’t want to PAY full price for anything, even to yourself.
As long as you got it at a good price to start with. That’s what you’ve paid. That amount can never go up.
Remember once the money goes into the 2nd Purse it can only make you stronger, more money , more stock = Less of your hard earned money going to the SM.
Once they have it its lost, if you have it, whether in stock or in the purse , you STILL
    have it!

The idea works because the money your making is going round and round, Spend 10 make 10, spend 20 make 20, spend 40 make 40. And so on. You are re-investing your savings in YOU!

    2nd & 3rd Purse Purchases
I've just placed 3 separate orders from Donald Russell online Butchers, for delivery on May, June, July.

Delivery is normally free only with purchases over 80 but every now and then they offer free delivery on all purchases.

The mince is superb and great value at this price. I find a lot of their meat etc, terribly expensive so I can only buy it when there's an offer on.
I like to spread the orders out over several months, 1 of the pheasants the pork pot roast and Tafelspitz will be used when they are delivered, and were bought as 'Treats' from the 3rd purse.

The remaining Pheasant and mince will top up my freezer, the mince was purchased from the 2nd Purse. If you charge yourself full price for this thats 22 for your 2nd purse. This was one of the first items I bought from DR and I don't buy any other mince now.

If you want to try DR, with the free delivery, you will need to do it soon as they change it all the time. If you want to place separate orders you will have to quit the page and return for each separate order.

I'd like to be in too please. I haven't done a challenge in AAAGGGEEES.

I read Motherships posts just before Christmas. I didnt really understand how it works but it inspired me to something else. In our budget my main "confusing money" is in money for DS1's school( 30 a mont-but Id like to save what I dont use for those busy months.),and DS2's nappies and formula (with the leftovers from the 60 budget being saved). Also I gave birth to DD1 two week ago so I was going to allow her the same budget-although Ill be saving her "formula money" as she has taken to the breast-Im quite thrilled with that as the boys wouldnt latch.

For the purses I bought 3 of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/260454510512?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p398 4.m1497.l2649
and "bound" them with 2 of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290600167816?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p398 4.m1497.l2649

My plan is to draw that cash as soon as I get paid and physically putting the cash in the relevant purse. And obviously as it builds up Ill then move it to savings-so I've just ordered another two to add to my "book" for second and third purse.

ETA: Im going to start with 10 and my dream fund is for a chest freezer. Where we live now doesnt have the space for one, but we are moving in June as our lease expires-and one of my criteria in our house hunt is "where will a chest freezer go". I really want to start bulk buying meat and batch cooking-but I dont have the space

I meant to say in my last post DONT order their meal packs, they are a waste of money. I ONLY buy their offers, I've had most of their goods, and I usually place a few orders every three months or so , and ONLY when there's a free delivery promotion, the way I see it not paying for that feeds us for 2 days. And spreading the deliveries is using their freezers until I have space in my own, but I still get the goods at a price I can afford. I go through Quidco too and save up that money for 'Treats' maybe a steak selection. I pay the 2nd Purse 3 for every DR pack I use even if its a more expensive cut.

I've decided to put the whole balance of my 3rd purse into my savings account 531 I had 890 last week but I bought a new washing machine @ 329. I would like to buy a bigger fridge freezer, around 300.
I've been doing the 2nd + 3rd Purse for many years, and the stockpile is high. And the purses full, so emptying one and taking my cushion away, wont bring us all to the same level, but it will give me something to work towards.

I bought DR mince last night @ 22 leaving 78 in the 2nd Purse, at the end of Jan when I add my 10 for the month and what I owe the purse 32 I will have 120 in my 2nd Purse, I will transfer 20 of that to the 3rd Purse which will go towards my fridge freezer. leaving 100 for bargains.

When I first started I bought, Tea, Coffee, Sugar, soap powder, tinned stuff, soap, shampoo, toilet rolls, kitchen rolls, toothbrushes toothpaste etc. All things I used regularly. I started out with 10 per month, if you can afford more you will stock your wee shop quicker. Some weeks you wont find any bargains, then like busses they all come at once. You be ready to pounce when they do.

I will list EVERYTHING I buy and from where, I will also post any good finds. If we all do the same we are sure to reach our goals quicker.
I go to all the supermarkets when they have something Im after, then buy ONLY that + any whoopsies I find, It was hard at first but much easier now.

I have set up little lists on my phone note section with a different note for all the supermarkets near me - as I hear of something on offer I have started putting it in the right note section then when I am out and about if near the supermarket I can easily pop in without making a separate trip there and can easily see if there is something on offer there. This olde noggin is not so good at remembering and I often used to write lists but then leave them at home and try to remember when I got there.

Oh Kerri you are an angel

Thanks mothership for the guidance, you're a star

Me join, I soooooooo need (want) a second freezer, have been on Curry's and I reckon 150

So 3rd purse for me will be 150 for chest freezer

I cannot believe how fast this works, I only started the 2nd purse the other week and I have money in it, left from last week. Like most I cane never seem to keep any money, I can save and draw my horns in when I need to but doing the combination of meal planning, the grocery challenge and the 2nd purse is working

I "buy" from my store once a week on a friday, armed with my shopping list I go and take my stuff, then when I get cash out I pay my second purse first

    Bargains
Mr M's Utterly butterly 90p (half price)
Mr S's Robinson's Fruit and Barley 74p (half price)
Right Guard deoderant 1.03 (less than half price)

Ive been talking to DH about this and he seems to be on board-will see how long that lasts.

I have one or two questions: The spreadsheet in the first post has some entries in it,are they there for example only? I was nervous about the document as I didnt want to delete and mess up someones work.

The other thing is we dont have space in the house really to store stuff-so I was thinking the garage. He says it gets damp in there, so obviously tins will be fine, but I wondered if I got a few of these buckets: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-x-1-Litre-White-Plastic-Bucket-secure-seal-/130548956315?pt=UK_BOI_Medical_Lab_Equipment_Lab_S upplies_ET&hash=item1e6552fc9b
would I be able to store stuff like flour, pasta and rice?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Kerri why don't you just wipe the offers clean (post #4) on a Wednesday, thats the day the supers change their offers

That way the thread won't become too difficult with expiry dates etc

    Just a thought

Ok, so I've just been to Mr M for my weekly stock up and got a bit ahead of myself so instead of starting next week with my 10, I've just spent nearly 40 building up a stock of offers!

So 40 deposited, I sort of counting as my January 4x weekly 10's. I now have 2.73 change in my purse and 61.22 value of stock. Need to take a few items out but need to work that out yet.

I will list all of the offers from Mr M below. I know some of them aren't the best but I live quite far from any other supermarket so take advantage of even the littler discounts. (Plus I still have a lot of learning to do ! ) normal prices in brackets after.

Ok, off to total up the damage from the rest of my shopping

    Have a great weekend all.

Kerri why don't you just wipe the offers clean (post #4) on a Wednesday, thats the day the supers change their offers

That way the thread won't become too difficult with expiry dates etc

    Just a thought

Oh, I also have another question....do you ever pay back the monthly/weekly 10 (or whatever) to your 1st purse/grocery budget? So you only keep the savings in 2nd purse. Or do you take that almost as a bit of pocket money?

    Thanks x

I'll find the thread that tells me what day the SMs change offers, I spotted it 2 days ago the purge each on its separate day. OH has stolen laptop so will update offers when I can grab it back.

I was going to pay 10 a month into my second purse as its budget from my wage each month. My first purse is purely grocery budget. I've only been doing this for a few weeks so still learning.

I think the idea is that you end up buying less and less from the SMs and more and more from your shop.

With regards to storage, it might be worth double freezing rice to get rid of pesties, oh and whole grains only last 6 months.

The spreadsheet is just an example so replace with your own items :-)
