Don't fit in with work

Outside work I don't socialise with others. I like reading, being outside and I like animals.
I think I've come to realize after some soul searching that my personality isn't going to lend itself to getting very far up the career ladder so need to just find something that makes me happy.
I wouldn't just sit about it I had a year off. I'd join a gym, do some volunteering, do some courses etc. I'm never lonely so the reduced social interaction wouldn't bother me. It would actually be a positive.

Do you have any zoos, farms, stables etc near to you. They would be perfect places for you I think. All involve outside work and animals.

I think the biggest issue is that in 2 years time whilst you have not been around people, you would be stressing/having anxiety about having to work with people again.

What about changing jobs? A window cleaner/postman? Most of your day is spent out on your own.

Yes lots of animal places around here. Might investigate.
You know ACG that's an important point I'd not thought of. By avoiding the issue I could be setting myself up to make things worse.
Maybe a postman could be worth a try!

I wouldn't recommend postman if you are looking for a job with less stress. Although the idea of being out on your own all day might appeal, it isn't that simple. The first couple of hours each day is spent in the sorting office and there is a lot of pressure to ensure that all post is delivered even when there are loads of packages which have to be signed for. You wouldn't be on the same round all the time so there is the stress of not really knowing where you are going and still being expected to be as effective as somebody who knows the route.
The route of working with animals might work as at least they don't argue and many give positive feedback if they are treated well.

Firefly well done on seeing the situation so clearly. Why not investigate career counselling? Some versions run personality tests and suggest good career matches. Good luck Humdinger

Some of us are much lonelier in a crowd than we are on our own & many people just can't see how that can possibly be. Do you really think you would join a gym when not working as I suspect that you would not as it would involve an interaction which you are currently avoiding. Please don't take that as a criticism, it isn't meant to be, as I find many "interactions" difficult & have been paying a gym membership for many years & haven't been for at least 4 years as I have had no-one to drag me there/make me feel guilty for not providing their transport.

So maybe a rethink of your future. Work now as much as possible, save hard for your future & make sure you will get a full state pension etc. Always with your eye on your escape - it is what I am trying to sort for my son who appears to have similar issues. good luck!

It doesn't sound like work is your issue but the type of job you are doing, it doesn't suit you.

Something like evening shelf stacking might be better where you work on your own and don't have to interact with anybody, unlike office work where it is expected you need to be friendly with people at dinner etc, in a supermarket role it will not effect how you do your job if you sit in the corner on your own.

    Especially this article - http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/01/13/the-shockingly-simple-math-behind-early-retirement/

If you save 2/3 of your salary you can retire in 10 years time. Possibly earlier as you will pay less tax - possibly later as the site is for US users and will have to be adjusted for the UK.

It will be a hard 10 years but then it is over and you don't have to go back to work at all if you choose not to.

I would love to meet someone who actually did this. It just never happens, merely a thought experiment. Tell you what, though, but give Mr Money Moustache an email. His post is dated 2012 so he's over halfway through this!

Also, I just worked out mine and I'd have about 4k a year to live off if I lived to the average life expectancy age (with the added risk of dying earlier with money in the bank which I couldn't spend due to this mad arrangement, OR dying later with next to nothing to show for it and a bit of a struggle).

It would, for me, be a hard 10 years followed by an even harder X years. Assuming I'm alive in 10 years, of course!

I'd be a bit keener to give something like this stock IF WE KNEW WHEN WE WOULD DIE, but its just not worth it with not knowing...

If you are lucky and find a good employer who values you, you might be able to get your working environment a bit tailored to better suit you specifically.

As posted on another board recently, I think I might be autistic which would explain a lot of what's happened at work and how I feel.

I have been thinking of how to deal with this and thought up a plan..... work for a year. Save either half or two thirds of my pay then take the next year or 2 years off. Then repeat.

If you are autistic, there are a lot of things in the world which can stress you out or make you feel uncomfortable. They may be concentrated at work now because that's where you spend most of your time, but you might find the non-working world is no better.

I think the most important thing to do here is to get a professional medical diagnosis. I would not recommend taking any action until you have one. If you are found to be autistic, you will get good advice about how things could be made better for you, and talk to your employer about reasonable adjustments.

If you are not found to be autistic, then the approach might be different. But still, I think you need to find a way to cope with, and enjoy, the world rather than just a way to avoid it.
