Usa Car Hire, Fully Covered ?

Hi, we have car hire booked with Hertz whilst we are in America and just wanted to know if we are fully covered or need to buy any additional Insurance before we travel.

On our paperwork it say's the following is inclusive - Loss Damage Waiver, Liability Insurance Supplement.

Would rather know and be able to sort out now, then get caught out when we arrive to collect the car, fully tired from the flight.

Thank You
Shane

It sounds like you will be fully covered. However, you might want to get your own excess type insurance which has separate cover for keys, wheels and glass as these are probably extra.

It is unusual to get the hard sell on insurance in the USA anyway.

    Agree.

You'll face a hard sell for excess insurance, usually about $10 a day, so own excess insurance will be cheaper.

One suggests that there is unlikely to be a hard sell for insurance, another other suggests there will.

Why would there be a hard sell for excess insurance, when there is no excess?

    :money:

But what is aforementioned by cubegame may be correct. That certain things such as tyres and windscreen etc might not be covered.
The other thing worth a mention is that the SLI/LIS will be at the minimum required by the state.
Can be set at as little as US$20,000. A standalone policy with SLI/LIS will offer US$1,000,000 of liability cover.

    Insurance4carhire
    Carhireexcess
    Bettersafe

    all sell policies with SLI/LIS.

My experience is that the hard sell is usually on the fuel options and GPS. Never understand the GPS one the rental is usually more than you could purchase a new unit for in Walmart.
  • We bought a garmin USA card for our satnav for the equivaent of about 2 days hire.
If you are travelling on toll roads you might want to rent the electronic pass, we weren't aware of any other way of getting one, otherwise you need to stop to pay manually.

Many states have gone cashless pay by plate for tolls, if not doing a lot of days on toll roads it can be chaper than the care transponder.

I find autoeurope rates good often include the extra(tyres/screen...) with zero excess.

For extra driver the Brits rate with Alamo.

For satnav vent phone holder google or waze 3 data sim.
    (offline the maps first.)

For the satnav, I've pre download the maps using Here., so hopefully all sorted there.

Toll roads, we will be mostly in Texas, but picking the car up from New Orleans and dropping off in Houston, so will have to look into the Toll situation
