I nominate Little Hearts Matter - supporting children born with only half a heart.
www.lhm.org.uk

I nominate this charity for personal reasons as my first child, a beautiful baby boy called Benjamin, was born with half his heart severely underdeveloped. Despite massive open heart surgery when he was 3 days old, and successfully making it home to live with us for a while, he sadly died when he was just under 8 weeks old. This was 9 years ago, and Little Hearts Matter have supported us all the way through, and I now return that support by helping other bereaved parents. It is not a well-known charity, and the heart conditions are little known about by the public too, so more support is greatly needed.

a. The Official Name of the Charity.
b. A link to the Website of the Charity.
c. A desciption of no more than 8 words of the charity - this is crucial, its what will be used to describe the charity in the vote.
d. One paragaph only (max 150 words) of why this charity should be supported; whether that's for your personal reasons or more generally.

a. Childline
b. http://www.childline.org.uk
c. 24-hour helpline for children in distress or danger
d. Since it was launched in 1986, ChildLine has saved children's lives, found refuges for children in danger on the streets, and given hope to thousands of children who believed no one else cared for them. ChildLine has now counselled well over one million children and young people over the last 20 or so years, but there is always more to be done. In the coming years they need to raise over £50m to grow their phone, text and online helpline services for adults and children so that they can help even more children and young people.

Please help support Childline so that a child in distress can receive that adult support they so badly deserve and need.
Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!
1. Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP [europe] Association
2. http://www.pspeur.org
3. Helps sufferers & family learn about this rare disease
4. Very rare disease but if it strikes you or yours, chances are even the doctors can't tell you much about it. Dudley Moore is a famous person who died from this, my mum did too, aged only 64. Think of Motor-Neurons/Parkinsons/Alzheimers all rolled into one and not enough research or money to help the experts find out why. Mum worked full time, gym 3 times a week, walking on weekends...within a year she couldn't even dress herself. As a family this association helped us through that, they had the answers, the support and the initiative to give us an idea of what to expect and how to cope. Vote for me and help the lesser known charity and 1000's of sufferers throughout our country. Thank you.:o

4)They provide support for the serving men and women in today’s Armed Forces and for those who have served - even if it was only for a single day. They also care for the needs of their families and dependants.
Last year alone, their professional staff and trained volunteers gave assistance to more than 50,000 people. They helped to make a real difference to many lives.Their services reflect the financial, practical and emotional issues people face today and they are freely available to virtually everybody with a Service connection.
• a. Eaves Housing for Women (275048)
b. www.eaves4women.co.uk
c. Provides support services for women affected by violence.
d. Eaves does amazing work supporting the UK's most vulnerable women. Eaves was the first UK charity to identify the plight of women trafficked into forced prostitution and established the POPPY Project. POPPY provides intensive support, accommodation and outreach services to help women come to terms with the horrific physical and emotional consequences of this abuse. Support is given to empower women to move on with their lives and gain the skills to sustain their lives emotionally and financially. Another key aspect of Eaves' work is the provision of domestic violence refuge for women and children, in particular women with mental health problems; substance dependence issues and with older male children - all reasons that typically prevent women from getting help. Many women supported by Eaves have no recourse to public funds such as benefits and would not otherwise be able to access services. The Donkey Sanctuary receives more income than the top 3 violence against women's charities put together. Surely women deserve more support?

a. BLISS
b. http://www.bliss.org.uk/
c. The Premature Baby Charity
d. One in eight babies is born premature or sick - that's 80,000 babies every year. Around 17,000 of these babies need intensive care and the figure is rising. BLISS is committed to providing specialist equipment, training and research to help more survive and to support the parents at a very difficult time.
My daughter Sophie has just celebrated her 1st birthday, but she was born 10 weeks early, needing intensive care for over a month, and without some of the specialist equipment donated to the Neonatal unit it may have been a very different story.

There are some very well known charities nominated here, BLISS is one that you don't hear about until you really need them.

• Find a Cure for Martha (Kidney Research UK)

http://www.findacure4martha.org.uk/

Funding Research to save lives

With her big smile and infectious laugh, Martha Stringer looks like any other happy-go-lucky 3 year old from Marple, near Stockport. Yet behind all of this, Martha is suffering from FSGS, one of the many diseases that affects kidney function.
Martha has less than 5 years until her kidneys fail completely and will then face the rest of her life on dialysis. Transplantation is the other treatment option but as Martha is missing an important gene, there is only a 30% chance that a transplant would be successful. Through all of this, Martha’s spirit has been a true inspiration to everyone around her. The campaign has been set up to promote awareness and raise funds for Kidney Research UK to help find a cure for Martha and others like her; to give them the hope of a better future. A target of raising £1million in the first year has been set.
• East Anglia's Children's Hospice (EACH)
www.each.org.uk

EACH provides care for children with life limiting conditions

East Anglia's Chidren's Hospices (EACH) consists of 3 children's hospices, based in Cambridge, Suffolk, and Norfolk. It relies on public support for around 80% of its income.

We came to use the services provided by EACH when our son was diagnosed with a terminal illness. They provided us with a lifeline...providing respite care, emotional support and practical advice, from experienced and highly professional staff. Our son enjoyed time floating in the hydrotherapy pool, relaxing in the sensory room, participating in numerous fun and stimulating activities, and lots of cuddles! EACH provides a whole range of services and expertise for families including music therapy, home respite, specialist play, sibling support, end of life care and bereavement support.

EACH provides a warm, caring, life enriching enviroment, in modern, vibrant surroundings, it really is a place for living.
You don't realise how important children's hospices are until you need them.

In view of a news item today about child and pensioner poverty I think it would be relevant to nominate either

http://www.cpag.org.uk
a charity committed to end child and family poverty in the UK

or

http://www.ageconcern.org.uk
the largest charity working with and for older people

It is absolutely disgraceful that in today's world and this day and age the two most vulnerable sections of the community - children and pensioners - should be at such a disadvantage.

a. The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.:T

b. http://www.roycastle.org/

c. UK charity wholly dedicated to defeating lung cancer

d. Lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer in the world. Their vision is to defeat it. They’re currently fund raising to build The Elizabeth Montgomerie Centre. The centre aims to have a profound impact on the future of lung cancer. To provide the highest quality information and support for patients and carers. Also; to offer first class training for lung cancer specialists, a UK-wide advice line for patients and carers and research into all aspects of patient support. There are currently no such centres catering to this need anywhere in Europe. I only discovered their excellent work when my uncle was diagnosed 2 months ago. I am so grateful for their information and support. It is not high profile as many other charities are but they have a specific, identifiable goal in mind. The more money raised, the quicker the centre will come into existence.
