Car radio does not come on immediately

Recently, when I start the car, it takes a few minutes for the radio to turn on. The display starts out blank and it appears completely dead. Then it will come on and it's back to normal.

Any ideas what could cause this?

    It's broken.

Depending on the car, it's either a completely built-in one, or it can be replaced with a separate single-DIN head unit (maybe with a facia adaptor). One of these is, obviously, far cheaper than the other.

Do you mean the radio is broken? I wasn't sure if it's a radio problem, or an electrical fault.

    So an Astra J.

Not easy or cheap, but it can be replaced.

If it's broken, why does it come on after a few minutes? Is this a common problem?

Presumably it always on switched through the ignition. Try switching it off before turning the car off then switching on after starting the car.
Astra forums would be a better place for common problems.

A faulty capacitor somewhere will be the most likely cause. 2 pence part that'll no doubt involve three or four thousand times its cost to diagnose unless it is obvious, i,e an electrolytic that has blown its guts to bits.

Funnily enough, it worked ok yesterday, so is an intermittent problem.
