PPI Reclaiming successes and failures 9th Aug 07 at 5:10 PM
Please report your PPI Reclaiming sucesses/failures here

This thread lists 1000s of stories, click the 'last' link above for the most recent

Not done it yet? Read the full Loan PPI Reclaiming and Credit Card PPI Reclaiming

    How to report your success/failure?

    1. Click reply to enter you story.

    2. Report your story in the following format:
    • What were you reclaiming: (eg. loan, credit card, store card)
    • Who was the provider: (e.g. Capital One, NatWest)
    • How much did you get back: ????
    • Did you get it back after a letter or did you go to the Financial Ombudsman: ????
    • And then write your brief reclaim tale

What if I just want to discuss PPI reclaiming/ask a question?

Please do NOT post questions in this thread. Questions may be asked in the PPI reclaiming discussion thread where, although not guaranteed, it is more likely somebody may be able to help you.

Happy to tell your story in a newspaper/on TV?

There are over 20m PPI policies in the UK and its a 5bn a year industry; yet I believe a very substantial proportion of those were missold and I want to spread the word. We need to make PPI reclaiming as big as bank charges reclaiming and Mortgage Exit Fee reclaiming.

    I need your help

To spread the word, I need case studies, people who've been placed on hold or succeeded and are willing to tell their story to encourage others to take on the banks and reclaim.

If you're willing to do this, please e-mail (sorry but we can't answer questions at this email address) with as much of the following info as you can:

    * how much was your loan/card balance
    * how much did you get back
    * who was your lender
    * a daytime phone number - we often need to reach people at very short notice
    * whether you are happy to appear in the papers,tv or both
    * where you live
    * did you use our template letters
    * did you go to the Ombusdman, court or use a claims handler

We really appreciate anyone that can help us with this but of course also please report your story below.

    Success Citi Financial PPI
What were you reclaiming: Secured Loan
Who was the provider: Citi Financial
How much did you get back: 3573.74
Did you get it back after a letter or did you go to the Financial Ombudsman: Went through Ombudsman,(but they paid it off their own back very strange.)

Didn't think I would be posting this so soon thought they would drag it out forever.

Story goes: 1rst letter sent 15th May requested 2700 + 1553 interest at their shocking 25.9% APR Total 4253.
They acknowledged said they would look into it.
    2nd letter sent 4th June
They were still looking into it.
Waited for 8 weeks sent off forms to the Ombusman on 16th July.
That week got letter offering 500 as a goodwill gesture as they had lost all of our documentation, did not accept that.
Sent this letter to the Ombudsman. 13th August got letter from the Ombudsman saying it has been passed to an investigator.
Then out of the blue today receive a letter from Citi Financial with a cheque attached only 680 less than the full amount requested. So very very happy,
(sorry it's a bit long winded.)

I did it!! guess how much I got back???
To everyone who thinks that they can't claim PPI back start reading this.....

.....back in Feb i claimed back bank charges and after 3 months was refunded 700 - what a shambles be patient anyway got the confidence to request my PPI back. Downloaded Martin's template letter and off it went to the bank thinking it would take ages for a reply (like with the charges) i made a note of the date and carried on as normal.....two weeks later got a letter from Nat West stating that all the PPI had been taken off my loan and that my monthly repayments were changing they were refunding me 4,700!!!!

    (pick me off the floor!!)

It was SO easy - if you have PPI go for it you can't loose

there should be a Saint Martin Day!!!

    IPP Success
I found out that my IPP was mis-sold when I became ill with Angina and decided to claim. I'd paid over 2 years premiums on a 4 year loan. I rang the Insurance Company who told me, straight away, that I'd been mis-sold the policy by Abbey.

I approached Abbey, who weren't having any of it. I then got in contact with the Financial Ombudsman. It took months, but I was successful and received all the monthly payments, plus interest, plus an extra 1% above the Bank of England's interest rate. I received 1007. I was delighted.

RESULT!! Just received a letter from first plus saying that they would not accept liability for my PPI (they wouldn't would they?!) but as a good will gesture they will refund 1100.00 on top of the early repayment rebate i had already received. I expected to get nothing so i am taking the money and running!!!

PPI successfully reclaimed from Alliance & Leicester!!!
I have just received a letter to say that Alliance & Leicester are going to make a full refund (including interest) on the PPI which I took out in June 2006 when I topped-up my unsecured loan with them! I was led to believe that the PPI was necessary for me to have in order for my loan to be approved (I had PPI on the previous loan). Thanks to Martin and all you wonderful people who use this website the cancellation/refund of the PPI means that I benefit as follows:

a.) My loan repayments have been reduced by over 40.00 per month. This may not seem a huge amount, but over the five years of the loan (at 10.5% APR), I will be saving approximately 3,000. The outstanding amount of my loan is now 23,000 instead of 26,300! That is certainly a step in the right direction in terms of reducing it!

b.) I had got behind with the monthly repayments quite soon after taking out the top-up loan in June 2006 due to the unexpected and sudden breakdown of my twelve-year relationship and the loss of a second household income as a result. I was also advised to stop paying the monthly repayment by a company dealing with my IVA application as I was struggling to pay it each month - then the IVA was refused so it all went pear-shaped from there. Anyhow, the 4,000 arrears that I had on the loan has now been 'cancelled out' as the loan has been re-calculated over 56 months by Alliance & Leicester so no longer do I have arrears! Hopefully as I no longer have any other debt my credit rating will improve as I intend to pay the FULL amount each month to the A & L and not get into arrears again - things will be a bit tight admittedly, but at least I have overtime opportunities available regularly at work which helps plus a couple of monthly financial committments that can be reduced or are due to be paid off in a couple of months so that will free-up a further 65.00 per month anyway!

c.) I'll be debt-free by June 2012! My aim and hope was to be 100% debt-free by the time I reached the age of 40. In June 2012, when I make my last monthly repayment, I will be 39.5 years old, so this aim and hope of mine IS achievable and realistic! Hurrah!

Anyhow, the moral of the story is ....... if at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again. Originally when I wrote to A & L they refused to cancel/refund the PPI claiming that I was not mis-sold it. They claimed they had listened to the recording of my loan application and, in so many words, they claimed that their advisor had not told me that the PPI was a condition of the loan being approved. Anyhow, I wrote back strongly disputing this and requesting a copy of the recording, stating that I would be contacting the Financial Ombudsman if I didn't get a satisfactory result!

Three weeks later the next letter that A & L sent me - received today - outlined how they could not provide me with the recording of my telephone application (surprise, surprise, I wonder why not?!!!), but 'as a goodwill gesture' they would cancel and fully refund the PPI and the interest on the PPI amount (10.5% APR) and set up my loan as a new loan to be paid over 56 months (instead of 60 months, to allow for interest, arrears etc). RESULT!!!!! I am well happy!!!

So, don't give up, persevere ...... many thanks to Martin and all you lovely helpful people on this website, you have saved me 3,000 overnight (well, it all took about 12 weeks but I only wrote two letters to the A & L)! I never realised until reading on this website that PPI could not be sold as a condition of the loan being accepted and, if it had been (as was the case for me) it could be reclaimed. I didn't think I would get anywhere but thought I had nothing to lose by trying; am so glad that I did, I'm not normally 'lucky' with things like that!

    HSBC loan
Took out graduate loan for 7000 with HSBC when i left uni 3 years ago.
Realised after reading on here that i'd been told PPI was essential to my gaining credit and not optional.
Posted template letter to HSBC on 15th Aug and recieved confirmation yesterday stating that they'd upheld my complaint. Refunded 1400 (inc. 8% interest) Very impressed! I hope they'll now refund this to the actual loan but not sure if that's how this works.
They didn't accept they were wrong but claimed there's nothing to prove i was properly informed.
Very impressed with this, even if your not sure print off the letter and send it, they can only say no!

Hsbc Success - Ppi Reclaim !!!
I have just had my offer letter from HSBC offering 1675 for loan PPI going back to 2002.

I just wrote a template letter (from this site), sent it off and 4 weeks later they held up their hands and agreed that I had been mis-sold the PPI. This was due to my being self employed at the time and would have had no chance of ever reclaiming it. However, on telephone discussions with them, they have agreed to refund me more on the point that I felt I had been mis-sold it and pressured into it by branch staff in order to get the loan.

I am stuck in the "queue" reclaiming my current account bank charges. How easy this was compared to reclaiming them!

Thanks to all at MSE who make the process so easy by providing template letters etc.

    They Paid!
Just received a letter back from A&L saying they are going to repay all my PPI premiums to date!

A nice £320 back in my bank!

It did however take them 3 weeks to get round to it, and i'm happy now!

They didn't admit to being at fault, just said "as a guesture of good will"

Without the email i get from this website i would never have know about it or even thought to question it!

    Thanks Martin and co!

    HSBC Success!!!
I was looking to claim back for 2 loans that I had taken out with them, 1 of which is still current.

I had written to them in the past and asked them to cancel the PPI on my current loan and got the response that they could do it but it would mean taking out a new loan at a worse rate from what I got before.

After reading through the site, I used Martin's template and wrote to them again on 31/08/07.

They called me on the 25/09/07 to say that they were going to pay out and that they would back to me with a figure. They also said that the new loan would be at the same rate and I would not be any worse off with the interest.

I've just got off the phone to them and they are going to pay me a total of 3027!! I can't believe it, i was really up for a fight on this one after already getting 1200 out of them for bank charges.

Thanks Martin really appreciate your help, this website is now my best friend when it comes to finances!

    PPI cover for loan
Complaint issued to Financial Ombudsman regarding PPI not successful.
As my loan was submitted by a broker Central Capital in 2004, and at that point they were not a member of the Morgage Code Compliance board they complaint appeared to be outside their jurisdiction.
So no further action could be taken and this cost my 5000

**WON** HSBC offered full PPI refund
I sent a secure email to HSBC asking for a copy of the credit agreement regarding an old loan of my husbands (on his behalf).

Received the agreement at no cost where he had signed agreeing to the PPI. He has alway said that they told him he couldn't have the loan unless he had their PPI.

Sent the template letter 3 weeks ago asking for it to be refunded on the basis of it being mis-sold. A week later he received a standard reply.. they were going to investigate... could take up to 8 weeks..etc.

Well today he received a letter offering a full refund of the PPI payments plus interest, amounting to 3449.92 !!!!

The letter states that the records they hold in relation to this are incomplete. "Although there is no evidence to suggest that you were mis-advised, as I am unable to confirm whether or not the product recommended was suitable for your requirements I will uphold your complaint."

Cannot believe it was that easy. 1 email, 1 letter and the cost of it being sent recorded delivery.

Am amazed and very relieved to be getting it back. My thanks to this site. I would never have known about it nor had the guts to go for it otherwise.

Hopefully this success will spur someone else on in their claim

After reading Martin's advice, I realised that the MPPI we took out with our mortgage had been mis-sold as we had been made to think we had to take it out with our mortgage company . Wrote one brief letter (didnt use the template as couldnt get computer access for a few days - just stated the basic points of my concerns) and a week later received a full settlement of all payments we had made in the year since the MPPI started plus interest!!

    Royal Bank of Scotland

Thanks so much Martin - am passing this info onto everyone I know

Thanks all, Reading this has given me the welly I need to claim back the PPI on my Loan, I reclaimed my bank charges from Halifax successfully around a year ago, so now I am going to reclaim my PPI on my loan, It wasn't an option not to have it as far as I was aware!!
I'll let you all know how it goes!

  • aanndd
After reading the article I emailed HSBC to get hold of all my Graduate Loan account numbers (I had extended the account several time between 2000 and 2005), used the template to email customer services, I received a letter after three weeks to say it was being look at my a special consultant, a second letter a week after that to say they needed more time to process, and then a third letter two days ago offering a full refund of 5749.

    Hasn't quite sunk in yet....

HSBC don't appear to have any records to contradict that I was mis-sold the policy, so they refund but did say they were not at fault.

My wife is going to go through the same process.

I sent off the template letter to LloydsTSB for a loan I have with them for 10,000. The loan would have been paid off early next year. They have agreed to refund me 2,008 & interest!

This will clear the balance of the loan, meaning 250 better off each month... and still have 450 & the interest in my current account. Very welcome with Christmas just about here!

Thank you so very much Martin & all!

    nationwide ppi refunded
    Hi im new

Thought you might like to no, we recieved only recently, 4 letters week after week from nationwide saying we have ppi on a credit card, but they could not locate a signed application.

My hubby had just signed the last letter they sent including reply slip to say ok to it, thinking that we HAD to sign it just to stop them pestering.
No explanation to what it was ETC

Thanks to this site i read about mis-sold ppi and never sent it.

Lo and behold another letter came saying they had refunded 121 summat back to us and cancelled the ppi which we never agreed to in the first place. we opened bank account & credit card in June 06.

It just goes to show they put this ppi on without the customers knowledge

I am now after sainsbury,s 9057 ppi added at start of loan which we paid off within 12 months on a 25,000 loan ended up paying them 33,000 for 12 months ? criminal
