Don't use the 0808 access number unless calls to it are truly free. Mobile co's are prone to block off these access number anyway if they get used too muck. The principle is: You register your mobe number on 18185 via your account with them. Then call an 0208 number from mobe using inclusive minutes, wait for voice prompt then dial through to the final destination.

I am finding 18185 cheaper than Virgin Media for example, to call 0845 numbers.

Do you think i would have wasted my time posting if you couldnt use the service from Giffgaff who do allow free calls to freephones and have made no attempt to block any numbers. And in any case no other mobile company has blocked calls to freephone indirect access numbers for yonks since Orange use too when they included them in inclusive minutes. It wouldnt be in their interest way to block them at the moment cos you normally pay a pretty penny to call them.

Also if you call the 020 number as you suggested from a mobile it would be expensive unless you had inclusive minutes,as you would be charged both by the mobile network and 18185.

    Giffgaff UK Prices.

See Free phone numbers (starting 0800, 0808 & 0500) Free

You can also make cheaper calls to 01/02/03 using 18185 then giffgaff charges:eg

    Giffgaff 10p a minute.

    18185 via 0808 number. 5p connection and 1p a minute.

if you wish to lessen the appearance of touting for business, you could edit your first post and remove your email address, not ask people to contact you by PM, and post answers to questions posed rather than say that you could answer them.

Cooki I think the fact these forums are so popular means they are heavily targeted by spammers, and people are sensitive about it. The forums are linked weekly from an email list with something like 8M uk subscribers, that's a lot!

By all means please do stick sound and give advice. Being a forum, the house style here is to ask and answer in the open, on the forum. This is great as it means the knowledge is shared, we all become a bit wiser, and it means a second or third person with the same question may get an answer without having to ask the same question. I know some forums maybe encourage back channels, this one though promotes public sharing. It also eliminates the risk of being seen as touting, which is strictly no-no thanks to the value of those 8M subscribers... Imagine what a mess this place would be if people could promote their businesses here! There would be no community, just pages of spam and promotions.

If you're sticking around I reckon you'll be a great asset if you have specialist knowledge to share. Nice to have you here :)

In case anyone's wondering, paddy and I are referring to some posts which have now been deleted. I leave them as a reminder to read the forum rules before offering to 'help' by PM etc.

I made the mistake of moving our business line from Chess Telecom to DamTel aka Dam Telecommunications. Our woes started yesterday when our line was blocked from about 4pm (Friday) and now over 24 hours later we still cannot make or receive calls! Without our phoneline we have lost a phenomenal amount of business as the weekend is the busiest for us. DamTel initially told us it is a fault and they are working on it but it's evident the line is blocked/barred and now I have been trying to call them for the past 24 hours but they do not answer the phone despite having a 24/7 hotline. Their line constantly says all advisers are busy so leave a message after the tone, then they say cannot leave message because the mailbox is full. I do not accept their claim of a fault at the exchange because of the messages I get when trying to dial in and out. Dialling any number from the line (except emergency calls) gives "The number you have dialled has not been recognised". When you try to dial in into that line it gives "This number does not receive incoming calls". This I know occurs when the line has been disconnected. It is not a billing issue as I have only just moved over from Chess to them so haven't even received any bills yet. Can anyone shed any light on this issue?

Would it help to get a VOIP telephone number and place a note on your website that you have a temporary, or another number.

You can select a VOIP telephone number free of charge on Sipgate and you get the number instantly.

This is possible and I'm surprised no one has answered you in 4 months! You dont need a telephone system to do this or a new line. You need a telecoms provider that can offer a service called myinbound (there are many telecoms companies that offer this product and I can happily recommend one if need be).

In simple terms you'll get a virtual 01 or 02 number which can be for any town in the country e.g. you could have a Leeds number in Birmingham you then "redirect" this number at your home phone number, so that anyone dialling the virtual number rings your home landline but doesn't know the number.
It's also self service so if you pop out, you can instantly redirect the 01 number to point at your mobile instead and then redirect it again when you get home.
It's relatively low cost as well, £10 to £20 pcm depending ont eh provider and then a pence per min rate for each call received.

    Hello -
I have done a quick search online to find an inbound carrier but it's a veritable minefield. I have poor internet connection (living in rural area), so can't use Skype and need to be able to divert to mobile if I'm out and about, as I'm setting up a guidance/helpline using a PRN number. Just looking for advice on cheapest way to route the call to my landline and/or mobile, ideally as an 01-prefix number as above. Have looked at EE and vodafone but 3g coverage is limited for both. Vodafone would be fine indoors with their signal booster but no good in the local area for use of Skype, they confirmed. So.. your solution seems the best so far.

Also, could do with advice for best landline telephone - again, been looking on Amazon etc but anyone with poor landline reception have any ideas? Have tried 2 telephones and callers complain 'too quiet'. Hope you can help. Many thanks.
