  • Had decided to donate blood as a new year's resolution and rang up to register. Received paperwork from them and now find that I am unable to do so as had a blood transfusion in 1989 after a caesarean birth. Very disappointed as wanted to do my bit. Hope the rules might change one day???

At least you tried. Many people never even get that far.

  • My recent attempts have been thwarted by one illness or another. Currently on antibiotics and was told I can't give blood for three weeks. I had to cancel Friday's appt at work. Thankfully we have a permanent donor centre in city so Ii shall book in as soon as I can.

The qualifications for giving blood changed on 7th November, so it might be worth checking for those who want to donate but couldn't in the past.

I got excited thinking they're relaxed the weight minimum when I saw this post. Just double checked and still 50kg minimum.

Anyone else in this 'unable to donate' catagory... it is still possible to donate for research purposes. They take much less - only about 50-100ml and still for a good cause. Usually posters advertising for volunteers in universities, university teaching hospitals and local papers.

  • I've been a blood donor for the last five years. Best thing I ever did. I am O+. I'm also on the Organ Donor Register. If I die before my time and my organs are usable, I'd rather someone got a chance of leading a full life than see my organs go up in smoke up a crematorium chimney. If you haven't yet thought about becoming an organ donor, please give it some thought. The gift of life is a precious and unique gift.

Can you give blood if you're generally a bit anemic and need to take iron supplements, and if you have a underactive thyroid and are on thyroxin?

Random questions I know- I hope they're not a barrier to giving as I'd like to donate but not sure whether they'd want it!

Hi - I don't know if you're still looking for an answer but I just phoned the blood people as I used to be a regular donor before being diagnosed with Graves' disease a couple of years ago and eventually having radio-iodine treatment this summer. You have to be stable on the same dose of replacement thyroxine for 3 months before you can donate; not sure about the anaemia/iron issue.
