Letting older cat outside for first time

Hi all

I have a 4 year old cat who has been kept indoors since he was a kitten. We've always lived in fairly busy city areas so it just felt the safest option.

Next year we're hoping to move to a quieter suburb with a garden. Would it be ok to start letting him out there, assuming we introduced it gradually to him? I've heard that if they don't go out within the first year or so they won't develop road sense, but my vet didn't seem to think it would be an issue at his last checkup.

I'd buy a cat harness and take him walkies round the garden, down the street etc. He'll get the taste for it soon enough.
  • Will give that a try. Thanks!

Will the cat adapt to the idea of traffic if you take them for a walk then? We will be moving later this year and might have a garden to let ours out in. The older one is retired and lazy but the younger two are daft/curious.
May you find your sister soon Helli.
    Sleep well.
