Taking it slowly, but doing it well. 13th Jul 17 at 7:39 PM
    Good evening all,

I'm rejoining this thread and you lovely people after a break of a few years.

I've got a new user name, but only because I can't get back into my old account. (My old diary was called 'Today is not a NSD'

I've kept the start of my username the same, so it's still a big wave hello from me, Wish.

A quick (I promise) update from me.

I'm about to turn 35 (still wish I was 25)

I now have a 1 year old little boy - Pickle

I'm currently on extended maternity leave/career break/unemployed (I took the statutory maternity pay from my high pressured, long hours, no social life job, handed my notice in whilst on mat leave and , because I didn't take any occupational maternity pay, I didn't have to repay any money. )

Husband is still a freelance audio visual engineer in the entertainments industry

Still in our 2 bed Victorian terrace, which we still love.

We still want to be mortgage free, but it's going to take a little longer than we thought when I was last here.

    So, why am I back?
I need some motivation and some accountability, need to get back on the no spend days. Need to curb some bad financial habits that have crept back in.
Need to lose some weight - nsd will help by no cake shop stops or treats from the discount supermarket at the end of the road.

I'm at the end of my maternity savings.

When I found out I was pregnant I stopped overpaying the mortgage and diverted all that cash into a maternity leave 'fund' to that I added my statutory maternity pay as it came in, 5k from an inheritance and a 5k gift from my parents.
The total of those savings have allowed us to live as we were for 15.5 months without hubby having to contribute anymore to our household expenses than he had previously.

I am very pleased with what we have achieved. But, that 'half month' is August and then the money is gone, I have no income and we will have to manage on hubby's self employment earnings.

I am meant to be applying for agency work, in my field, for 3 days a week from September. It's not happened yet due to hubby being run off his feet with work. I'm not worried about this, I will sort it when I can.

We have no debts, other than our mortgage (which currently stands at just less than 37k and has 12years 3 months left to run)

We receive child benefit, but nothing else (previous warnings have been too high to receive tax credits or anything else)
We have no family living nearby, so will need to pay out for childcare come September for 3 days a week, as I'll be agency and hubby is self employed we can't get childcare vouchers, but should be able to open one of the new tax free childcare accounts saving us 20% on childcare costs, which will be around 120 a week.

This is what I already do:

YNAB all my accounts - this is how I've managed to have 15 months off work
Use ynab to save for all annual bills, overpaying each section so I have a little bonus when it comes to paying the bill

Meal plan & cook from scratch

Try not to spend too much on things for Pickle, and try to sell on things he has finished with (this has had mixed success)

I'd love to have your support as I attempt to pay off the mortge earlier than planned. I'm aiming, from August, to overpay the same amount as the interest added to the account. This isn't much, but it's a realistic challenge given out current circumstances.

    Thank you for reading

    Wish.

Another nsd. I think that's 5 in a row. A record, even for me.

Mum's coffee this morning didn't cost me anything as a friend paid as I've paid for hers previously. Then Library with the Pickle, then home. This afternoon the plasterer lady visited to make recommendations for our bedroom. There is a 'if we are planning on moving soonish' option - which is reasonable (less than 400) and a 'we're staying in this house for a long time' option which will cost a couple of thousand, it's my preferred option (getting rid of the fitted wardrobes that I don't like) will have to consult with the hubby.
The window company got back to me - just under 1k for two (rather large) windows, it's about what I was expecting. Another company returned my enquiry today and are booked in to quote in about 10 days. So we'll see what they come back with.

Continued to deal with the Work issue, part of it is resolved, part is ongoing and will rumble along for a while.

Lazy weekend planned. Our city is hosting a number of large spectator events this weekend, so we don't actually want to travel too far.

The increase in the mop pot tonight is due to a 5 Bank account reward, I can't work out what is paid when for this account, so it's a nice surprise when it comes.

I hope everyone is having a lovely end of the week, and your weekends are fabulous too.

    Wish.

I'm soooo tired. I need to sleep, but I'm a bit wired too, time of the month and all that, hubby can do no right today... oops.

Spends today, well, can't keep the Nsds up forever. Fuel in the car 35 groceries and some household bits: 18 ish. Tilly tidies dome and some more days of the 1p a day challenge done. It feels a lot further through June than it actually is, this means it's going to feel like a VERY long month again, a bit like never ending May.
Grocery budget looking ok 120 to last the rest of the month ( yes that's becuase I did a massive shop a week and a half ago, but still) let's hope there is some surplus in the other pots when we hit July.
Just checked the diary and it looks like hubby is working the next three weekends, or at least part of them.
I'm waffling now, so going to sign off. Night all.

Another nsd, some Tilly tidying done from direct debit/cpa pots, but that's it. The nice weather has finally broken with a rain storm just as we got home. Outside smells so fresh and clean. (Although I don't think it was enough to really cool things down)

I spent some time outside in the yard this afternoon. I sorted through the storage boxes we keep outside, mostly Pickle's toys, but one I've put all the plastic plant pots in. I've also been thinking about how to continue to improve that space in our house. It's a typical terrace dog leg yard, but is a reasonable size for what it is. I'm thinking of zoning it into 'rooms' reflecting 'taking the indoors outdoors'
I'm thinking a kitchen area, a dining area and a living area. I need to tidy up and sweep the non fake grass areas (kitchen & dining room zones) sort out a couple of the planters we've got (new liners needed) then investigate 'vertical gardening' for the living room and dining room zones. There's a lovely recess in the back walk that I think I will tile and put a single shelf in and turn it into and outdoor bar. Put some vertical planting something around it to grow herbs and botanicals for my g&ts. We have a bbq (for the kitchen) and a set of table and chairs.
I could make/get some bean bags or big cushions for the living room, but storing them is an issue, so maybe a bench with storage in the seat might be needed. Finish it off with some festoon lighting and hopefully a lovely, multifunctional space.
Just need to learn how to use the masonary drill to put the vertical planting stuff up. Hmmm may have to attack that 'pin board' app.

    Wish.

A very early check in for me today. I'm heading down to the southwest for an inspection this after (my organisation being inspected, rather than me doing the inspection)
One of my subscriptions has gone out today, and there are only 2 this month, not three, so I've been able
To do quite a big tilly tidy to hit the next mini mop pot target. Woo hoo.

Can't imagine it will be a nsd today. Loooong drive and no snacks in stock - oh well.

Hi DIA, our plasterer is awesome, she's not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but she is excellent. We have been known to stand at a newly Plastered wall and stroke it, it is that smooth. I need to get cracking on the garden plan when I have 5 minutes spare, focus on one job at a time, so I think the 'bar area' should be first.

Today I've made another setting visit,
My 12th of 20 for the year (One more booked in for the start of July) nice easy one today. Spends have been 'expenses only', so a nsd and no direct debits etc gone out, so nothing to tilly tidy.

Tomorrow is sort of a work day, but a friend, who works at a beauty college, asked me if I wanted a free facial and massage - can't possibly say no to that!

So not many updates. I'm off to go and sort my kindle out and download a book. Going to do some digital detoxing over the next few days and weeks (kindle acceptable as it's not social media, which is what I need to reduce really) have a lovely evening everyone.

ETA: done some 1p a day transfers to be able to Tilly tidy too.

A free facial and massage - amazing (with an open invite to go back to be a guinea pig again in the future - urm yes please!)
Work was uneventful - which was nice and makes a change.

nor sure what happened to last night's
Post. Anyway, neither today or yesterday have been a nsd. Day out at an adventure place yesterday with Pickle. Then the food shop today. The debit card has been well used (I will get the 20 uses in this month to claim for 5 bank account reward)

Another nsd today, seem to be doing well at the moment, I can't see it lasting though, this is me. No direct debits or anything gone out either, so no tills tidies to be done.

As I mentioned earlier in the week, I've been reading 'how to break up with your phone' I spend far too long idling mooching on my phone, checking it every 5 minutes just in case someone has messaged me. I wante to be more productive. I heard about the book on the breakfast radio show and downloaded onto my kindle, not free, but I had vouchers on my account. I'm on day 4, reviewing my phone habits that have been being tracked (via a free app) for 4 days. My 'pickups' and 'time on my phone' were huge, but actually, it's evenings when I'm sat doing nothing, Pickle in bed, when they go up. I have done some other things than the book suggested though.
    1) dug out my kindle, signed up to kindle unlimited 30day trial (7.99 afterwards, but already loving the audio books bit whilst cooking and sorting the kitchen out) halfway through reading one book and listening to another, has reduced idle mooching round social media, and I'm reading more already
    2) dug out the cheapy cheapy 'smart watch' I bought randomly a year or so ago, it buzzes when a message is received so I'm not checking the phone every two minutes 'just in case' it also tracks my steps, so maybe I should set a target for that too (it also vibrates when you've been sat on your bum too long)
All small things so far, but I need to do something to keep more active and be more productive, small, 1degree steps though. I'm going To keep up with the plan from the book though and see if I can be even more 'present and less distracted.

    Watch this space..

Small spend today on milk, sunscreen and a new kindle book. The way I'm goin I'm going to cancel the kindle unlimited before the 30days are up, not many of 'my types' of books seem to Be included, which is rubbish.

Hall stairs and landing completely decluttered. Kitchen tidy, washing done, dried and out away. Work sorted for tomorrow. Watching the footie, drinking a gin.

a Full work day today, really tired as usual, my head hurts. Pickle is now in bed, he's really tired after choosing not to nap at the Childminder's today. Friend coming this evening to fit the child seat into her car as she's playing taxi service tomorrow for us, me to the station, Pickle to the Childminder's.

No spend day for me today, great news. Tomorrow probably won't be as I don't think I can carry enough snacks etc to get me through the train trips as well as all my work things. We'll see.

    In other news..
The 13 step plan is all about being mortgage neutral by July 2020, but I've seen a house that hits pretty much all the boxes of 'our next house' so hubby and I may need to have a long conversation. Our house is no where near ready to go up for sale and this house may go quite quickly but at least it's shown me that what I'd like is out there. Oooh things to ponder...
