What is the best way to accept on-line donations ?

Does anybody have experience of, or comments on, any of the payment gateways for collecting payments on-line?

keep an eye on the charges and be ready to move if you find a cheaper one. As you appear to be a voluntary body make sure whoever does your IT can change it over easily and that more than one person knows how to do it in case your IT volunteer disappears.

there is not much to choose between them from a technical perspective if all you need is a payment gateway on a website (ie you are not renting physical card machines etc).

We use PayPal. It's probably not the cheapest (you need to study the fees scale). But Paypal is very common in UK and recognised by many. So we find zero reststance to use. And you don't need to sign up to Paypal to send money (just need a UK credit/debit card). We can also email Paypal "invoices" to people, and they click to pay.

We also now have a contactless card machine from Paypal. This lets us take instant payments at events. Again, there are charges for this.

We went this way because, increasingly, people EXPECT to pay online. Anyone under 30 doesn't really know what a cheque is, and cash is often inconvenient.

Depends what it's for - could you expand on what the donations are for? i.e. registered charity, to help someone out, etc.

But if you go for BACS, you MIGHT want to consider having two separate bank accounts. We do: money goes into one, and those bank details are freely available. The only way money goes out is on an internal transfer, to the No. 2 account for which the bank details are not so readily available.

That way, no scammer with a fortune to send us can access the accounts.
