Christmas Eve Boxes?

A heated debate has sprung up about Christmas Eve boxes at MSE Towers: Are they succumbing to "crass commercialism" or are they in the spirit of Christmas?

Personally I love them and include everyone's new Pyjamas (not Christmas themed!), a boardgame or family activity for the evening and snacks and sweets.

We'd love to hear if you think it's a nice tradition or if it's just unnecessary spending this time of year?

  • It's only something I've heard of recently. I didn't have it when I was a kid.
Could you do with a Money Makeover?

Never heard of them. I guess if you celebrate Christmas then this sounds like a fun idea

I think it's a nice idea, I have friends who see their grandchildren Xmas eve but not Xmas day, as well as handing over presents to be opened Xmas morning, they do little Xmas Eve boxes that they can watch the children open :) usually pyjamas and a few little treats

I think they are waste if done just for the sake of it. I do them for my children, but low key:

Pjs/toothbrushes - I would have to buy these anyway.

Santa plate, bottle, Santa key - I reuse these every year and its a bit of fun for the children to put out The treats.

A few treats - we might buy a couple of festive chocolates or sweets.

So, we dont spend much, but get to add some festive excitement to the big day.
  • I think they are fine, if they don't contain too much. As others have said small items like pjs, santa key and some sweets why not :-)

What next, Christmas Eve Eve boxes??
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.47% of current retirement "pot" (as at end February 2024)

Ha!!! So missed a trick there didn't I. ;) I was just thinking of the instant gratification of moving everything earlier and earlier....Boxing day would be just too long to wait (for some)

I've never heard of this 'tradition' (and I'm a pensioner).

Where has this idea come from?
And how long has it been a 'tradition'?
  • Nope, we don't bother. I have enough to do without sorting out boxes for Christmas Eve as well!

We do, however, sit down and watch a film together, then read " 'Twas the night before Christmas" before bed. We also put out a carrot for Rudolph, and a biscuit and drink for Father Christmas. No need for a box.
