Giving up/ Cutting Down Alcohol Thread Part 16 8th Apr 19 at 7:52 AM
Welcome. Here we are again, time for a new thread, new starts and new challenges.

Let's take a trip down memory lane and remind ourselves of In Search Of Me's (ISOM) original post in Part 1:

    24th February 2008

    Quote:
In Search Of Me "There are a few of us who want to give up/cut down & I thought it would be good to widen the net to support each other along the way!
For me alch & feeling good for the time I'm drinking & then rubbish after go hand in hand. A bit like drinking & smoking & drinking & getting the munchies! Last year I gave up alch & fags for 10 months & then "slipped" towards Christmas until by Jan I was doing both with alarming regularity. I dread to think how much both cost me financially and I know physically that I've felt rubbish. My lungs hurt, have put on weight & literally none of my clothes fit so I will have to buy more - which means a dent in my budget that I can ill afford. My skin is also yukky & much nicer when I dont drink/smoke!
I had my last ciggies the night before last & last wine on Tues. I know I will feel 100% better when I crack it but also know it will be hard. One disadvantage here is that all too often DFW "parties" tend to involve alcohol so I'm also hoping that this can possibly be a safe haven for those of us who want, or need, to abstain, for now at least!
Anway - I hope that this can be a place of real support for people who are sturggling. I do wonder whether there is a link between debt & drinking as from the Jan thread it was obvious that so many struggle to give up! Plus I know for me that I feel much hapier and in control when I dont drink (or drink in moderation) - which of course begs the question "why do I do it?"! Anyway, I do but will now try not t ad hope some of you wil join in. Some days I know I wil fail, just as I do with my debt free journey and I am more than happy to be given a swift (but nice!) kicking when I do! Hugs all and dare I say... but this time with water!!
And here's what she started!!! :

Part 14 and 15 is Here

    Part 13 is Here

    Part 12 is HERE

    Part 11 is HERE

    Part 10 is HERE

    Part 9 is HERE

    Part 8 is HERE

    Part 7 is HERE

    Part 6 is HERE

    Part 5 is HERE

    Part 4 is HERE

    Part 3 is HERE

    Part 2 is HERE

and the original starting thread is HERE

Here is a post from back on thread 1 or 2.

Springwatch Girl Well, week 5 of no alcohol and I see a different person in the mirror. My eyes no longer look dull and vacant, they actually have a little sparkle and my skin doesn't look like uncooked pastry anymore. I feel that I have won a battle but not yet the war. Hope everyone else is at the point they want to be, I never want to be that person I was, I have been tempted but I just think back to what I had become. The sun is shining at the moment and I feel good and want to continue to have the sun in my life"
    Good Luck Everyone!

What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.

A brief, accidental but successful nose to nose between the small tortoiseshell cat and Layla between the bars of the babygate this morning. No hissing, no bottlebrush tail, no barking, just a meeting. Very, very happy about that. It's not the first time they've met but the most controlled and successful. Early days, there will be ups and downs, but it's a real positive.

Loving the updates on Layla HB.

No drinking here today. Why is it that some days are so easy and others a struggle?

Does anyone mind if I join this thread?
I have always liked red wine, but since last year when I passed the big 60, I have just been drinking too much. Some family problems haven't helped at all, but my wife has been fantastic.
There have been times when I take a couple of days off, but if anything goes wrong I definitely drink more.
The other problem which I noticed last year, when I didn't touch a drop for two weeks, was that I didn't sleep at all.
I have also heard that it can be dangerous to give up completely without tapering down, is this true?
Anyway, I feel lousy at the moment so I have to do something positive.

    Welcome andy.

You could aim at a target for the rest of April or you might want to go target free (TF) and just clock up as many as you can.

Welcome Andy ,,,, we are all here for the same reason ,, but in different ways ,!
Everyone is friendly and you will always find people who UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE GOING THROUGH.
    You will not be judged,
    Good luck ,,,
House I saw yesterday was perfect, a bit over budget , but I couldn’t get any more of my ‘boxes ticked’ if I tried !
So I have to think long and hard about what to do!
My kids both work and give keep , so may have to up it a bit ,,,and man said he will give me bit as he is here most weekends but I’m not sure I want to accept his offer ,,,,I I have a good bit of thinking to do in the next few days 6/18 2/5
I will never be rich but I'm happy

Andy: welcome to the thread. There are lots of ways to give up / cut down, you need to find the right one for you. And yes, disrupted sleep / mood swings / blah feelings are a thing! If you're drinking regularly your body gets used to it, and stopping is a bit of a shock.

    Some things people have found useful;

    - the Drink Awate app for monitoring your daily/weekly intake
    - the Annie Grace 30 Day Challenge (daily emails and video content, think it's still free)
    - Weekly / monthly targets
    - Swapping in AF drinks (Becks Blue is v popular!)

    Good luck

Loveasale: house sounds great, and don't you need to move in any case? I would go for it.

Declaring on 9/25 today and 4/5 SNC

    Morning all.

Welcome Andy. The sleep gets better. I find going to bed later helps me. Have just slept straight through which I haven't done for months and months.

Thank you Shaggy & Cathy for the updates.

Another 1 for me please bringing me to 5/16 Gym this morning then the dreaded weekly weigh in which is not going to be good. I seem to be on plan Mondays and Tuesdays then it all goes downhill. Oh well weight onwards and downwards and afds onwards and upwards. Pub quiz probably tonight so must be good and not start on wine before we go out at 8.30. The people we go with are a boozy pair. In fact I think he is a functioning alcoholic. Not a good influence. I must be strong. Will have a think today about my strategy going forward as I enjoy the quiz but don't want it to be the bottle of wine, then gin and tonic or two. Also OH drinks too much beer and disturbs me getting up to p** all night. Any advice anyone on how I can manage it tonight. Think I will have a pint of cider, that will take me a while to drink.
