Santa's Challenge 2015 - Xmas, Birthdays, a chat, a bit of everything 4th Jan 15 at 8:06 PM
A big warm welcome to old friends and new and here's to an organised 2015, lots of bargains, plenty of chatter, good friends, and hopefully aiming for a money neutral 2015.

Including the famous "miss Hoodies challenge", where Miss Hoodie finds those lovely jobs we all try to avoid.

Santas Challenge - That special day of the month, the 24th, where we have a challenge, I always say think of it as a pick and mix, if you fancy a task then great grab it, if you've already done it or haven't got it no problem pull up a cup of tea and chill and relax.

Whether its planning for Christmas, Birthdays, Mothers Day, Fathers Day or any celebration your among friends here, whether you want to moan about that special man, or your stuck on what to buy a family member, that man in your life, between us all, I'm sure we can help if you get stuck.

Thank you to everyone for making 2014 (and 2013) Santas Challenge so special and heres to 2015 version.

Happy new year to everyone! Greetings all.

It seems an age since Christmas, which nearly didn't happen for me! I was only 8 miles out of town on a long steep hill when the engine died! Luckily a passing motorist turned back to see if I was okay and then lent me his mobile phone as I didn't have a signal so I could phone breakdown. A passing policeman said he would phone my friend(he did.) The AA man tried valiently to fix but advised I should not drive down to Sussex and instead escorted me to my garage. They ordered the part for next day and I set off 26 hours later than planned! It was touch and go as we did not know if the new part was going to completely solve the problem- My advice is don't have a modern diesel with a particulate filter! After all that had a lovely time except the dishwasher broke as I arrived, so 'though I didn't cook I was washing up for ever.......

Since then I have also been on a cruise. Warning- not the best time of year to leave from a British port as seas are rolling and sunny weather, even in the Canaries not brill. (But the food was good)

Whilst you are thinking about saving for presents etc may I add, make sure you have a bank account which rewards you! Even if you don't have the minimum monthly payment to qualify there are ways to juggle money... such as take out money on day 1 and pay it back in on day2-as it counts as a credit!

If you are a Tesco shopper always go to www.tescoviews after your shop. You get 25 points each time you fill in the survey

Just bought wrapping paper in Wilco's for 10pence a roll! (and little notebooks @5pence for the shoeboxes.)
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
If you found my posting helpful please hit the "Thanks" button!
Many thanks

Read this thread most years but have never really joined in before. Looking forward to being part of it this year.

I always get hubby to buy me a nice Paperchase notebook and pen every Christmas and spend a few hours on Christmas night filling it in. My first page lists all the special cards I need to get, then I have a page for batteries, one for Christmas Eve Hamper, one for Stocking, one for Advent Boxes, and then a page for family, a page for people who my son buys for, and then a page each for closer family members, always leave my last pages for my son as he tends to get quite a bit...lol

I have the same thing set up as a spreadsheet, only I also add prices I paid on this and the RRP, with it all set up to add up the totals and give me the savings.

Last year I should have spent 2417.65 and only spent 1857.27 so saved nearly 600.

This year so far I have bought all the wider family, and most of the people my son buys for. Also got my son some great things including 6 different Mega Bloks set and the Thomas Table for Mega Bloks. Also got all the family cards and a few boxes plus wrapping paper.

Pleased with my total so far. I should have spent 237.66 and have only spent 64.22 so have saved 173.44 !!!
I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY

Hello everyone!

It's been hectic again here, I'm just trying to buy furniture on ebay because we have run out of storage in our little house and still have boxes (after FIVE months).

All the birthday gifts are bought except a small bonus thing for my son, who will be 2 in September (I have 11 pounds of Amazon vouchers just now and will be looking for something tonight over a cheeky Crabbies). Four out of 15 Christmas gifts are also covered, total spend so far 52 pounds, RRP 249. Christmas decorations, cards and wrap are also bought. I feel pretty organised
Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: 193.75; Saved from RRP 963.76
Three gifts left to buy

Hi katiehound omg the car sounds a nightmare. Glad you had a good time and the cars fixed.
I second not going on cruise in winter. I did some transatlantic and got stuck at sea for 10 days trying to out run a storm.
Thank you for advice 're banks just in the process of sorting my finances out.

Caroline well done on the rrps at Christmas and some good organization there. Well done on the weight loss too, are you following a plan ? I know how hard it is to lose weight

Wb sugarspun , I've just moved and I can honestly say I envy you having 5 boxes. Lol. I think your savings are fab too. Congratulations on the toiletries I'm going to make that my challenge this year

I'm also going to lose weight. Hopefully.

Well my house is still a nightmare but hopefully that will change over the next few months. I say months because I've moved from a newish build into a house to fix up. Not sure if it's a good move yet. Watch this space.

But a positive is we have sorted t he finances. So tomorrow we will be debt free which is a massive accomplishment for me as I've not been debt free for approximately 32 years. :-/ always owed out for something. Just need lottery now so that I can sort all my family and friends out :-)

wow theres some serious planning going on and plenty of bargains by the sound of it.

apologies not been about, I think it has been 2 weeks of 3 steps forward 4 back...

to sum up

Miss Hoodie - Has a lovely shiner of a black eye, bust glasses - all of this from queuing in school lunchtime, some older boys apparently starting pushing and shouving between themselves and the one lad fell face flat into her face.... The school say its her fault for being queued up for dinner!! Was an evening in a+e, good news - they dont think the eye socket is fractured just very badly bruised and swollen.

To date no one from school wants to speak to me.... hence I am looking forward to parents next week....

Dad - he's till recovering from the chest infection, back to hospital on Monday, - chemo no 6, but by previous even numbers it be blood transfusion and tests...

Me - Slowly coming to the end of this chest infection, had an asthma review at gp, so so, but a bit of a shock, a major shock, jump on the scales (the bit we all hate), hold on come back, then she weighs herself, - wondering what the heck is going on...

15KGS, (old money) 2 stone 3 lbs, or as she put it 60 blocks of butter............

Thats how much weight I have lost since last summer...........

Apart from thinking my elastic had gone in my jeans, it was a flipping shock...

----
Apologies as well re santas challenge, running behind so that be up ad running tomorrow.

Hi everyone

Can I please join this challenge? With a large family to buy birthday and Christmas presents for I have worked out that at 30 per present per person (so 60 per year for each person) I need to spend 1,200......so I definitely the tips and advice from this challenge to either reduce that total or offset it by generating income from ebay sales etc. I should say although I am from a large family (and so is DH with 22 siblings/half siblings between us), we do only buy for our (grown up) children/their partners, and our grandchildren. We are seriously considering telling our children that we will now only buy for the grandchildren but I want to see if I can continue to give them gifts but just not spend as much. I am knitting my son a jumper for his birthday so that has reduced the first 30 as I am using wool and pattern I have had stashed for over 2 years - so it feels like a zero spend.

Looking forward to getting to know you all through this challenge.

Hi everyone, it does seem a lot quieter on here than usual.

Susan, dare I ask about your Christmas village?

Sorry to hear about you coming home earlier than expected to chaos.

Sugarspun, I had been wondering how you were getting on. So you're a fan of Crabbies?

Hi Katiehound, you had a colourful Christmas it seems with all those last monent trials - and so much washing up!

Mum2one, what a strange school if queuing up is a mistake and having someone fall into you is your fault. Looks like you have your work cut out with the teaching staff - but you must have some knowledge what is acceptable or not after the your governing experiences.

How is grandma Hoodie these days?

Well done on your weight loss - it's great to find it out in unexpected ways like you did - wondering if your elastic had broken lol

Santas Challenge - January

massive apologies for the delay... but normal service is resumed

Christmas and Birthday planning
Hopefully we all got a bargain or two in the sales, so as well as making sure that they are safe and sound and our of prying eyes, hopefully there is some dents made in the list and some budget beaters in there. It may sound daft but if your putting in different places, add a little note as to where you have hid it.

Cards
As well as the Christmas and Birthday cards, it may be worth holding a couple of spares in hand, whetehr thats a home made card, some blank cards you can personalise or the actual events
Some thoughts
Plain female and male cards
New house
Congratulations
Engagement
wedding
retirement
Thank you
get well soon
Sympathy (not the nicest of thoughts but you never know and saves running out to the corner shop and paying a lovely price)

Christmas - What would I change
This may seem easier to think of now as the event is over and planning for 2015 Xmas is under way, - is there anything you would change, you wanted to do but didn't
Was the turkey too big - you still have Turkey curry in the freezer?
You forget the present for the dog?
You had to hand deliever 20 cards - forgot to post them?
Didn't buy batteries for toys...?

Miss Hoodies Corner.../SIZE]
That time of the month that brings out the cleaning cloth....
This time the freezer...
Working in the basis that we stocked up for Xmas, and now slowly getting back to normal, this gives us a chance not only to defrost and clean but to see what is lurking in the darkest depths, how many brussel sprouts tried to make there break for freedom.... also do a stock check.

cash Back/COLOR]
Don't forget to go through cashback stes for online purchases, check the sites as the % may differ or there may be special offers on, for eg, topcashback had an xmas promo on for 12 spends through their "picked out sites" could earn and additonal 50. Check the details, as there are spend levels, but even if you just achieve 6 of the promo all helps out.

Clear cookies.....

Survey Sites
There are literally a 1001 survey sites out there, and what suits one person, may not sit another, but jan challenge sign up to a new site and see how you get on.

It may be worth having a notebook / spreadsheet so you know when you've requested/ recieved a cashback amount.

I find that if I set myself a target, then I'm enclined to make an effort on sites, currently its 400 for ipad for Miss Hoodies bday, - every 1 earned is 1 less to find.

Summer clothes
This may sound mad, but I always found that when Miss Hoodie was younger, her clothes that she grew out of, esp summer items, shorts, swimwear, etc, went for more money on ebay in Feb/mar than in summer, - as families go away at Easter, so will buy them as shops don't always have the wide range in.

Me, Me, Me
as we're generally the ones who sort everything, its time to take a bit of me time, but as we're on a mse site, those luxury spa days with bottle of champagne have to be a distant dream... whether its having a soak in the bath with some scented candles, putting your feet up with a good book, going for a walk, stop for a coffee in town, painting your toe nails as well as finger nails, a little treat goes a long way.

Is there a better price
It would lovely to ask for a discount at the weekly shopping, but I think that one we have to dream on, but if you have a big item, car insurance, house insurance, holiday, service contracts, Sky, always ask if there is a better offer, you never know, I booked the family hol, it was on a promotion, but me being me, joked being cheeky, any discount for being nice.... worked got another 30 off... the most they can do is say no...

Is there a money saving tip that you could pass on??
start the ball rolling - steam clean the washing machine.... once a week I put the machine on full heat - 90C, longest program and empty, - the heat helps clean the drum and the pipes

Is there a shopping tip that you could pass on, or something you've seen on tv and gone wow thats a fab idea?

for me, if a man shops they need a list!!

----
As always think of the challenges as a pick and mix, a little bit random at
time, but hopefully some fun along the way xxxx

mum2one, you seem to have lots of problems with the school. Would it be worth contacting Ofsted with your concerns? If your child has been physically harmed by a lack of supervision allowing the boys to fight like that, it's something they should address urgently and if the school isn't doing it there are other options.

Thanks Anglea, it's getting better How are you?
I do like an occasional Crabbies, I rarely drink though.

Challenge time! I love challenge time!

Christmas and Birthday planning

The birthday list is almost finished and I've made a start on Christmas.

Cards

My plan is to try to make some cards this year. I do have some female/girl birthday cards but need a few generic male cards.

Christmas - What would I change

I think only the volume of stuff, Big Kid still has wrapped gifts at my mum's house because she was so overwhelmed. Everyone is getting less this year.

Miss Hoodies Corner...

Bah, I don't want to clean out the freezer, but my freezerventory is woefully out of date so ok. I'm on a bit of a mission to spend as little as possible in February, so I need to know what's in there.

cash Back

Duly noted!

Clear cookies.....

Survey Sites

I've been doing surveys but fallen a bit by the wayside. I challenge myself to do 20 pounds worth this month.

Summer clothes

Sort through the summer clothes added to my list!

Me, Me, Me

Oooh, our local college has hot stone massage plus spa access for 10.50. I'm booked in on the 10th

Is there a better price

My mum was getting blinds made and asked if they could do a better price. They knocked 30 pounds off (~15%) just for asking!!

Is there a money saving tip that you could pass on??

Put it in your virtual basket and sleep on it. If you still need/want it the next day then maybe it's meant for you. If not, you didn't really need it.

Urgh, mum2one the school just sound awful! Hope it all gets sorted out soon!

Christmas and Birthday planning

I have a spreadsheet set up now with a note on what I've bought AND where it's hidden (too many Christmases where I forget about a secret stash and find them come March when I'm doing a spring clean - not this year!!)

Cards
I try to make all my cards, but have one or two ones I've made in advance - hoping to make some more when I feel like crafting!

Christmas - What would I change
This is a good question! Probably wouldn't have bought so much food! I was doing pretty well, then caved at the last minute and bought some junk that I really didn't need, so hopefully I can stick to the list this time round!

Miss Hoodies Corner...
I'm already ahead on this one, I had a big freezer clearout last week (bleurgh...)

Cash Back
I already use Topcashback, but I read on the boards that Quidco is pretty good too, so might take a look at that...

Survey Sites
I'm normally terrible at this, but I signed up for the make 2,015 in 2015 challenge, so I've been forcing myself to do every survey I get sent (it's so boring though haha!)

Me, Me, Me
Definitely a walk in the park (literally!) for me, well, weather permitting!

Is there a money saving tip that you could pass on??
We have 'Pot luck Friday' where we basically raid the fridge and try and make a meal out of it so we're keeping the food wastage down

Is there a shopping tip that you could pass on, or something you've seen on tv and gone wow thats a fab idea?
I keep a list of long-term things that I'd like to get at some point but there's no rush, that way, if something comes up on Ebay, in the sales or on Freecycle I'm ready to get it!

Hi all

Sugarspun - I recall from ages ago you mentioning Crabbies and I set out to try some at the pub but all they had was ginger beer - non alcoholic so still haven't tried any.

Mum2one - thank very much for the latest challenge.

Changes for this year -

I found last December exceptionally stressful, more than ever - I had a sort of mini breakdown from things happening in my personal life, worrying about dad who'd spent most of the summer onwards in and out of hospital and getting really behind with Christmas prep to the point I told mum I may have to cancel Christmas day - as it happened all worked out ok but I don't want to get into that state again.

So want to get more done in advance and really look into time management on a daily basis and cut down on the timewasting activities.

Today ex is supposed to be bringing over lots of large boxes of stuff belonging to DS1 who is going abroad to stay for a while and heaven knows where they will go. Ds is yet another big cause of worry with his health. I think ex was going to try and talk him out of it but he's already booked tickets etc.

I've still got problems in my personal life (that involvment since early last year).

I saw the doctor last week that referred me to therapy about this person (and other issues) and thinks if I cut ties with them that I may end up with a similar one which seems to be my pattern, but the therapy centre still hasn't been in touch with me, backlog.

I've also been seeing another doctor about other problems including the mystery allergies (I must be channelling mum2one and Miss Hoodie) got to have a scan later this month in connection to this.

Freezer - I've still got upteen slices of ham since after Christmas cheap bargains Mr T shop - I am not joking I had a whole drawer of them. I may clean the fridge instead of the freezer as that part looks ok.

Cards - yes this needs to be organised better as often end up with special occasions cards that are used for shopping lists as they don't seem to be suitable for anyone as bought part of an offer so only one card looks right - it misleads me into thinking I've covered all occasions until I need one and realise I have to buy something else.

Money saving tip - don't go into pound shops unless you are very organised - I've lost count the times I go in for one item and come out with over 25 of stuff only to discover I've bought things I already have yet they didn't have what I wanted.

So then I go into another shop to get the specific item and end up spending more in there.

One week I spent over 60 doing this. Whereas if I'd gone to Iceland in the first place it would have probably cost me about 15 in total.

Hi all

Christmas & Birthday planning
I have a notebook that is my bible and goes everywhere with me. I have a page for each person on my Christmas/birthday list and note what I've bought/paid for it.
I immediately wrap presents before stashing them away. Saves me so much time, especially at Christmas. I write the recipients name on the gift tag (and discretely on the present as well in case tag comes off). I also write a number, e.g. 1, 2, 3 etc - depending on how many presents I'm buying for a particular person). Then against the item details in my notebook I write that number and circle it in red. That way I can always go back and look up in my notebook what any present is, even though it's already wrapped. Hope this makes sense.

Cards
I have a stash of cheapy cards that I bought 10 for 1 at Card Factory. However, I do make my own cards throughout the year when time permits.

Christmas - what would I change
Honestly - nothing. I purchased presents throughout the year and only paid full price for Snow Glow Elsa (but did manage to get this in the shops at RRP and not at extortionate eBay price).
Christmas food shopping - I didn't buy anything until boxing day (we were not home for Xmas day and had Xmas dinner with family so didn't need to buy before boxing day anyway). I got all my Christmas meats, sweets, puds etc. in the boxing day sale for 44

Miss Hoodies Corner
I organised the freezer middle of last week, and cleaned my oven in the middle of the night a couple of nights ago (sleepless night so decided to get something good out of it)

Cashback sites
I already use Quidco but probably not religiously enough I need to investigate the other cashback sites and see what pays the most on each shopping occasion.

Survey sites
I tried, in the past, I really can't face those sites

Me, me, me
I desparately need a haircut and colour. I can get my sister to do the colour for me, but must make the effort to visit the hairdresser. My fringe no longer exists and is now down past my nose

Less pressure on myself, it was a difficult xmas, that was the circumstances, and I put undue pressure o myself that xmas would be perfect, - life doesn't work like that.
Cook less mince pies and cakes.... I go a bit ott..... i estimate made about 400 mince pies....

The main thing - I would check that electrical items word, as I brought DD a new tablet, didn't work, despite being returned, still waiting for replacement...

Miss Hoodies Corner.../SIZE]
That time of the month that brings out the cleaning cloth....
This time the freezer...

Thats going to be my half term treat!!! Need a sort out....

cash Back/COLOR]
The 2 sites I use are Quidco and Topcashback, never had any probs with either site, I've had 70 for changing my neighbours gas and elec, def worth comparing.

my plan is to cash out on the 1st of each month (as long as above 1)

Clear cookies.....

Survey Sites
I'm going to have a bash at swagbucks as my newbie site

It may be worth having a notebook / spreadsheet so you know when you've requested/ recieved a cashback amount.

Spreadshhet set up...

Miss Hoodie grown out of the kids size clothes, - it was a good run. Do have some stuff to sort through.

Me, Me, Me
would say love to paint my toe nails, but I dont have any.....
long soak in the bath - dont have a bath!!!

joking apart - have a chill out evening, face mask, and a couple of carry on films.... bliss

Is there a better price
My next haggle is Sky, want a better deal on sports (i've only kept them for dad...)..

Is there a money saving tip that you could pass on?
nappy sacks make a good poopy bag for those walkies....

Is there a shopping tip that you could pass on, or something you've seen on tv and gone wow thats a fab idea?

for me, if a man shops they need a list!!

----
As always think of the challenges as a pick and mix, a little bit random at
time, but hopefully some fun along the way xxxx

Hello everyone, how are you managing with the weather?

I've enjoyed reading the latest challenge updates, January you are super organised with the numbered tags and wrapping at the time of purchase.

Mum2one, 400 mince pies

Hope things go well for Grandad Hoodie tomorrow and you also get results at the parents evening later this week.

I'm thinking about the parent's evening...do you have any paper work from the hospital visit because that is maybe where I would start. (After , of course, listening to all the academic stuff!) The school has an obligation of care- in loco parentis- so an accident in the line queueing for lunch is really a no-go. And if they aren't supposed to be in a queue for lunch who was enforcing that particular rule????

If anyone shops at Superdrug be aware that their own products are buy one get second half price, plus 50 points extra if you spend 5 or more (their products)for beauty card holders. A canny way to do that is to split into 5+ purchases and keep getting the extra 50 points rather than do one bigger shop! I really like their body butter... so stocked up. I also noticed they had reduced (I assume Christmas) gift sets but nothing grabbed me! There was some perfume at half price and some BOGOF Nivea products.

Have decided to go for 8 shoe boxes this year so sorted out what I already had over the weekend- 3 shopping bags full. Made myself do a list! It means I have about half the items. Bought some cute (noisy) wooden crocodile clackers in Wilco today-@ 75% off, so 50 pence each- some child and parent in Romania, Ukraine. etc will love them (or not!!!) Only 3 there so I had them all.

Bargain in a charity shop. Brand new Tu 100% cotton T shirt @1.49. Slightly snug but it will fit me after the 5:2 diet. Started with a fast day on Sat, boy was I glad when evening came to see the chick peas meal!! Next hungry day is tomorrow!
Congratulations to everyone who has lost weight- it's hard hard work
We are forecast snow from 5pm pretty much all evening.......this is my dog training evening but we shall have to miss that as it is on twisty single track road in places with a ditch on one or both sides- bad weather conditions make it very dangerous so it will be a stay at home time!
Hope you are all faring better........

Hope parents evening goes ok mum2one and you get answers.
Katie hadn't realised snow was still about, I thought it was just staying cold this month (you've given me something to hope for - sorry I'm a child when it comes to snow)

Sorted the few birthday cards just need to right step mum to get ideas for my dads pressie.
Not decided what to do re valentines yet, either go out for meal or stay in for one. Think the boys will be away DS1 has offered to treat DS2 to a concert that they'll have to stay overnight at so seems silly going out if we have the house to ourselves.
Still knitting I need to get another 7 squares done.

Hope all are well.

Good news ....hospital visit - all ok apparently his blood is holding his own, so no need for any extras this time round, and the weight still increasing he's put on 4lb in 4 weeks.

Parents evening - absolutely brilliant reports, just a bit of she goes in a trance usually every few weeks - ties in with the chemo run, achieving grades and excelling on some, thou she won't be the science teachers fav pupil, cue open ground....
Science teacher - so miss hoodie what do u like best about science

Miss h - nothing don't like science

Him - but we've done x,y,z and thus and that and we're going to do this and that....

Miss h - ok but still doesn't change anything

Him - absolutely gob smacked - but I've taught yr 7 science for 7 hrs and not 1 student has ever said that

Miss h - you did ask sir, at least I was honest

----
But yesterday - miss hoodie comes home in heck of a state its kicked off at school - the friend - had a major melt down, lurched full blast at miss hoodie, called her a f... Woof woof, about 6 times, it took 2 teachers to move this girl, the one teacher said you should be in "the unit" - but no they don't move her!

Queue 2ngt - happen to catch the deputy head and the welfare teacher, - told them in no uncertain terms
- the food tech teacher telling kids they don't each fruit and veg there die of bowel cancer.
-that dinner system - black eye- blame on miss hoodie
- yesterday's incident

That if it doesn't get sorted I will bypass the school system- inform the papers and I will contact the mp
Contact every relevant authority regarding non compliance of accident reporting
That I want a meeting nxt week for them to tell me what's been done....

----

Must worked - as we were leaving..
dep head - can I have quick chat....

Accident - wasn't put in book but he was sent an email - will rectify the situ- (we're see)
There planning a meeting with the dinner team to review safety etc and make sure that the q is managed better (only time will tell)

As for the other girl - they've arranged a full meeting between the staff involved and why policies and procedures weren't followed -
There having a "welfare meeting" with miss hoodie and the girl to say stay apart, lay ground rules and then there follow all procedures re this girl. There separating miss hoodie and the girl in classes - with a view to moving the girl into a different class.
Had a personal apology from the cookery teacher - - apparently there's kids that don't eat fruit and veg - told her that whilst I appriciate the apology - she shouldn't scare monger the kids.

We're know more tomorrow, what really annoys me and even when I was school gov that the head is Lord and master, as the head and govs are the be all and end all of school regulations - there isnt really a port of call, again it's whether parents will actually complain as a lot of it esp at primary school level is all done on playground.

It's playing it be ear xxxx
