Ooh yes, I do hope that this will be an ongoing thread. It will help me stay on track and hopefully I can pinch some good ideas from you clever ladies. :D

I am a widow of three and half years standing and am just starting to find my feet, making new friends and doing a bit of tentative socialising. I am quite good at handling money as a rule but like a few of you have mentioned, my “monetary policy” has been just a tad too relaxed this year.

I have been very generous with my children but thankfully they are now well established and won’t need any more financial input from me, I can just think about my own needs (and wants) from now on.

And yes I am going to include wants, I am not going to deprive myself of life’s little luxuries and treats. I still want to be able to go on holiday and get out and about. But.......and this is a big but.......I have been a bit too free and easy this year. I’m ok, no debts but I can definitely make my money work harder. There’s plenty of fat that can be trimmed. :rotfl: After my holiday in January. I shall definitely knuckle down when I get back.

I have already checked my accounts and worked out Where I can cut back and where I can make savings but also what investments I can make. For example I am going to rejoin the National Trust. Loads of properties to visit for cheap/free days out.

One of my challenges is not to buy any clothes next year. That really shouldn’t be difficult.....I have wardrobes full, enough to open a small boutique. :rotfl: so apart from undies I am aiming to “ shop from my wardrobe” next year.

I have brac a brac and jewellery to sell and enough books to start a library, so again no more buying books. So hopefully both money saved and cash raised there.

I have also started making more use of my bus pass for trips into the city. It’s actually not only cheaper but easier than using my car. I can get straight into the city centre without having to worry about where to park and paying exorbitant parking charges. And far less stressful. Win-win.

I am going to enjoy this challenge. All money saved will go towards my next big adventure........

I am off to the Amazon in January, wahoo......all paid for. So my saving efforts in 2018 will hopefully raise enough to see me in Canada in 2019. That’s my target. :D
  • I completely agree that Jackie O is an inspiration and I love your posts.
Amazon sounds like an amazing adventure.
  • And yes I am going to include wants, I am not going to deprive myself of life’s little luxuries and treats. I still want to be able to go on holiday and get out and about.

me too, life is too short. I bought a lifetime NT pass last year and also a lifetime share on a steam railway. Yes ok I splashed the cash but was still in the mindset after my husband died `why save`. That mindset has settled into reality thank goodness, however I am going to treat myself to a new house in the near future and when I am settled again, then I will actively save, like jackieO, for holidays

I too have helped my children with cash, they never asked btw. A lot of money but no more now and going forward, I will be sensible, having finally realised that my income and savings are a finite pot. Treats will be special and saved for and that will make them even more special

I stopped colouring my hair this time last year and love the sparkly highlights I have now and it looks far better with my complexion. I was only using home dyes but at £5 a box and doing it every 6 weeks, it did add up.
Are the sparkly highlights something you can do at home? I usually wait til I have quite a big badger stripe before I bother colouring it again (so about once every 3 months) but I hate doing it, it's time and energy consuming (I have lupus which means I have very little energy to start with). DH does help, bless him, but it's getting so I dread doing it. He also trims it for me, so I don't have to endure visiting the hairdresser at all.

I only use the tumble dryer for towels (makes them nice and fluffy). I find the rest dries really easily and quickly even indoors.
I do tumble bedlinen when the weather is too poor to line dry; we have a tiny bungalow, and it just isn't practical to have wet bedlinen strewn about the place.

Just shows, though, it's "horses for courses", same as with so many things in life; what suits one person simply won't work for another. :o

Mr LW has three hospital appointments in January, so I'm going to have to put my big girl knickers on and drive (I loathe driving, and am very nervous behind the wheel). It will be cheaper for me to drop him off, bring the car home, and fetch him again when he's done, than for him to pay the eye-watering parking fee.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)

Kittie, I use MS Money as well and I enter credit card items as soon as I spend them. I have a Natwest Reward account where I get a credit card which gives me 1% cash back on all household direct debits plus supermarket spending and 0.5% everywhere else. I pay £2 per month for it but it's so worth it

After I've entered the spends in the credit card account in Money I do a transfer for a future date from the account that the direct debit will come from. That means the credit card balance is always zero in Money but my current account shows a future transfer equal to the credit card payment. I update the figure every time I enter a new transaction

This means I always know if I've spent a lot because my current account balance will be low projecting forward. It also tells me that some months I am 'riding the float' (a term they use in You Need A Budget) Lots of people swear by YNAB but I couldn't get on with it, prefer Money. But it does emphasise that you should live within your means for the current period and discourages managing your cash flow with a credit card. My approach also tells me when I am doing that and it does help me to tone down my online shopping
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Just having a lunch break.......and a little rest. :rotfl:

I have fibromyalgia, arthritis and IBS...earlier this year I really did feel awful and of course I tore my meniscus in May as well which didn’t help. I was quite ill for a while and had to resort to employing a cleaner. Three weeks ago she had a family crisis and handed in her notice.

I was going to replace her but having just hoovered my house from top to bottom (hence the rest whilst I have lunch:rotfl:) I have decided to try and manage by myself. That will save me £20 a week straight off.

Touch wood my fibro is under control and as long as I keep on top of things I don’t see why I can’t manage by myself. My son has said he will shift heavy furniture every so often for when I want to really “bottom out” a room.

I will regard it as exercise.......;)

I have noticed that As I have continued to declutter and simplify then the housework is much easier anyway. And of course now that my son has moved out and taken the cat (always loads of cat hair) with him then it shouldn’t really get too messy with just me. I can always do the upstairs one day and then downstairs another day so that I can pace myself.

I have worked out that if I want to go to Canada in August 2019 I have just 20 months to save at least £6k which is the minimum I would need. That’s £300 a month. Can I do it......Well I’m going to have a good try. ;)

Saving £20 a week on a cleaner for 20 months - call it roughly 80 weeks - is £1600. It’s a good easy place to start. I need to think what else I can cut back on.

    All suggestions gratefully received.

I definitely think I could cut back on the food budget by at least £1k a year. Probably more if I put my mind to it.

Actually I can’t wait to get started.
  • I'm so pleased that you're enjoying this thread!!

Totally agree about drying outside - trouble is, the number of days in the year when you can actually get clothes snuff dry outside in the north of England are few and far between. My clothes go outside on a Monday, or round the radiator if the weather isn't good - but if they're still hanging around by Wednesday morning, they go in the tumble dryer. Otherwise the place would disappear under a pile of not-quite-dry washing.

I used to do almost that maryb, We had a smile current then and a smile savings account. The savings account was my float and my buffer and I always made sure my smile savings had enough in it to cover the cc as well as holding a little extra. It was a simple matter then of clearing the smile cc with the smile savings. I got out of the habit a long while ago but am going back into it in two weeks time. If anyone is interested in MS money then you can still get the cds, the one I use now is on works 2005. It is so valuable to me now that I took everything else off an old laptop and just use it for money and to watch dvds on my lap. That laptop has windows 7 on it and I permanently disconnected it from wireless internet

LL, cbd oil, blooming fantastic. The most pure you can get, costs a fortune though. Took 3 small doses over 2 days and suddenly no sciatic or hip/knee/ankle pain. Have to drop it under the tongue and hold it in mouth as long as possible. Tastes strong but is ok

re a cleaner. My neighbour got a cleaner, once a week, £25 a week. I bought an expensive roomba, treated myself after finding it a struggle to cope after husband died. Cost a lot but cheaper than now. It was paid for in 28 weeks worth of a cleaner. Upside was that I had no person in the house being intrusive. Another upside is that it does a wonderful job and keeps the whole house clean ie dust free. They sacked the cleaner as she started to get slip shod and I still have my roomba, working very hard and efficiently, effectively for free and it has been working for `free` for 60 weeks so far

Kittie.......Thanks for the tip about cbd oil. I tried hemp oil (which I think is more or less the same) very good but it did upset my stomach. However, I was in the middle of an IBS flare up at the time so probably not a true test. I am going to try again after Christmas now my tummy has settled again. It certainly helped with the fibro when I tried it.

The problem is Fibro and IBS are sort of “sister” ailments. If you have one you often have the other. I did read that There is a theory that IBS is in fact a precursor to Fibro......I know that I had IBS first so maybe there is something in that theory.

Anyway thanks for the link because the one you have shown is actually quite a lot cheaper than the oil I tried. I paid £33 so quite a difference. I’ll see how I go.

I have wondered about a Roomba..next time I need a new hoover I might look at those. I currently have a Henry. I bought a special booster brush which has made using it a lot easier. It glides over the carpet easily and is very efficient at picking everything up.

One of my recent acquisitions has been a smart meter. They fit them for free.. I find it has helped me reduce my energy consumption, it does make you aware of how much “juice” you are consuming.

I have today reduced the heating thermostat by One degree. Can’t say I have noticed a difference, the house still feels nice and cosy, but then again it’s not quite as cold today as it has been. I’m afraid I refuse to be cold.......it makes my fibro worse if I get chilled.

TBH although my cleaner was helpful she only did the jobs she liked.....:rotfl: I often had to go round and do the bits she ignored.

I once asked her to do the oven because I just couldn’t reach without being in pain......talk about half hearted. :rotfl: i ended up having to do it again. If I struggle again I’ll just get one of those oven cleaning companies in but I think that as long as I keep on top of things then I should be ok.

I had a shocking first six months this year......enormously stressful and I think my health just took a battering. But hopefully now that life is on an even keel again I should be able to control both the fibro and the IBS. Don’t want to tempt fate but I now feel better than I have done for a long time. Long may it continue. :D.
  • LL you are doing brilliantly honey, and well done, fingers crossed for you for the coming year.

I have a gardener who comes once a fornight and keeps my garden neat and tidy and costs me £12.00 a time .well worth it for me as I can no longer mow the lawn or weed, and he does all the bending jobs and even takes the clippings away with him.

Smashing chap and worth his weight in gold and any small job he can do he will whist he is here, change a light bulb for me or put a washer on the tap.He comes twice a month from March to the begining of November and as he is retired he says it keeps him active as his wife is still working at the moment.

I pay out once a year if needed to get an oven cleaner in but this year I didn't need her as I only now use my big oven for baking I use my remoska for cooking an awful lot of stuff which is easy to wash up.

Usually after my oven is turned off I will wipe it down with a damp microfibre cloth to keep it as clean as I can, and rub over once a month with a bicarb soda paste left for a bit then wiped off will usually help to keep in OK

I have cut back on a lot of my ironing this year to what I used to do and if its almost dry tee shirts will go straight on a hanger to finish off. Only iron what I really need to now :)Life's too short to waste time ironing

As the nights have got chillier I use my blanket over my knees often in the evening as its not worth switching the heating on for an hour or so and my house seems to hold the heat quite well.

Also having a goal LL and setting your target is a great way to cut back on stuff. I try not to shop unless its out of stock in my cupboard, and keep shopping trips to once about every 10 days or so if possible or 10 things needed on the list works well for me I try to find a substitute from my stock or just change what I'm having to eat if I am running short of something

I think we all do very well once you start to think about the cash you are shelling out and thinking about how you can cut it down a bit
