Should I buy 20 year old Jeep?

I have always admired the Jeep Cherokee, and actually had a test drive in a used one about twenty-five years ago. I did not like the automatic box, and forgot about it.

Recently I found a low mileage manual diesel, which is not in bad shape. I am wondering what problems to look for. I have looked at Youtube, but most of the videos are American and about petrol models.

Anyone had/have a diesel Cherokee? Would you buy one again?

Same trouble you'll find with any 20 year old motor - rust, worn out bushes, worn out mechanical components, tired interior...

Bought plenty 15-20 year old cars over the last 10 years.
Buy on condition, pay a realistic (cheap) price, and enjoy.

Diesel cherokee, the 2.5 diesel? You need to get it fully upto temperatire then find a long hill to climb and see if the temperature rises.

If it does your in for some trouble.

And don't get too attached, or be afraid to scrap it if/when it becomes a money pit.

Most 15-20 year old cars will be bangernomics territory and should be treated as such - as you say, don't pay too much!

American cars are not famed for their build quality. If you want that particular model then go for it but don't pay much.
  • You need to check the oil to know about the maintenance of the engine. Need to see its metallic condition either sellers used much spray to hide dents etc. In my opinion, if it is in good condition and sells is not asking for much then you should buy it after a serious inspection and paperwork. Don't forget to check VIN.
