The op hasn't revealed their salary so it's hard to make any informed decisions. They may be able to get a mainstream card, if depends on their credit history and salary, none of which we know of.
I read "I'm not allowed a credit card as my income is too low." to mean they have looked and are aware that their salary won't allow them a card.0 -
Your travel insurance should offer protection as well for certain situations. Credit card protection is the last option if they fail.0

Get a banker's draft? Don't involve a friend - recipe for disaster if anything goes wrong, and we've seen many the end of a perfect friendship on these boards where friends fall out over money.0
