Advice please people
Looked at a flat today and was told the contract would be a rolling one every 6 months
Im a little weary about this
is this usual, Im worried after 6 months the landlord could sell up and Im homeless

You'll struggle to get long term security in the rental market. Yes the LL could sell up, but then that could happen after a year, 2 years, 10 years.
Have you asked if there is a chance of a longer term after the initial 6 months? It could be that for new tenants they offer 6 months, and then after that they are willing to make it longer if they are happy with you.0 -
Most landlords start with 6 months to see how the rental goes. So just because it starts at 6 months doesn't mean that it will only last 6 months.0

It's usual. If you were renting a house out, you'd want to limit the potential time the tenant could be there in case your circumstances change, or they do damage, don't pay etc.
The landlord could actually start to sell it after a few days if they wanted to, but that wouldn't necessarily make you less secure if they sold to another landlord.
Your tenancy agreement will give you protection against eviction till it ends, and even then you couldn't be made be homeless, because the landlord would need to apply to a court to evict you. That could take several months, at the quickest.0 -
The house I was in the longest was the one where the landlord had a lot of other properties. Try find one like that.
The houses where the landlord only had the one rental, I was getting my notice quickly and having to move because they either needed the house back or wanted to sell it.
Renting is insecure, I just advise not to buy nice furniture or too much stuff as you!!!8217;ll be moving house with it and it needs to fit in different sized rooms.0 -
Whether you have a 6 month fixed term, or a monthly periodic tenancy (rolling) from the start, the law prevents the landlod evicting in the first 6 months.
And either way, the law allows eviction (subject to correct procedure) after 6 months.
So the only way to be more secure is to have a 12 month (or 24 etc) fixed term - and very few landlords offer these from the start.
