Reg plate lotto

Just saw this, not sure if it's worth posting ... seems a bit fishy to me ...

"Called the reg plate lotto, it's a free-to-enter monthly draw using your car's number plate with a star prize of a lifetime supply of petrol or diesel for one winner in each of the next three months.

Launched by UK fuel price information provider PetrolPrices, the top prize is £265,720, which is the equivalent of filling a car up with £70 of fuel every week for 73 years.

The Reg Plate Lotto launches on 21 November but will only be followed by another two monthly draws when the same amount of money will be up for grabs.

It means the total amount given away in November, December and January will be £796,160.

The prize equates to the average annual fuel costs for drivers multiplied by 73 - covering the lifetime of receipts a motorist would theoretically run up if they passed their test at 17 and handed back their driving licence at the age of 90.

It says the odds of winning are a fairly steep 55million to one. " - Text from DailyMail

However, the small print on the terms and conditions does reveal that you need to agree to receiving email marketing communication about the lotto - and if you opt out from this you are automatically withdrawn from the draw.
Having signed up for the competition, This is Money has already received an email saying PetrolPrices will be sending follow-up emails about a 'more personalised service' based on your fuel price searches and 'discounts and offers' that will also be communicated.

For them to state the odds are 55,000,000 to one then they clearly are not just having a draw that someone will win each time but just one that someone may win (everyone allocated a random number between 1 and 55,000,000 and a random number then chosen as a winner with overwhelming odds that number has not been allocated to anyone)
