Is this considered overtime or a second job?

Options
Hiya, anyone able to work this one out for me?

I work for the same employer in one full-time job, but an extension of this I undertake on call work. This is on a rota basis and covers a week. The on call work is paid at a flat rate for a week, no variations. I am only aid for the hours i work in the main job, and so there can be variations in how much I'm paid.

My work is through an agency, I use an UC. For the purpose of invoicing these are set up as two separate assignments, as they have two separate rates of pay.

Would HMRC consider the on call hours overtime or a second job? And does it even make a difference?

HMRC have no interest in overtime. I would say this is work relating to your only job and not in any way a second job.

You only have one job and that is working for the UC. They are your employer, not the people you do the work for.

The number of different assignments is immaterial.

    Thank you agrinnall and unforseen.
I have about 3 or 4 different tax codes for the year 2017/2018, and trying to get my head round it all, as I've been asked to complete a self assessment.
Initially the employment agency messed up and failed to send HMRC p45/p60, when I transferred to UC, resulting in HMRC calculating on 2 jobs, with an estimated earning of over a 100k. Although I received a rebate, its all still a mess.

Be careful, as it is possible that, if you have had different assignments, you MAY have had multiple employments with the agency. Get all of your payslips together and check that they all have the same payroll number and that the year to date details follow on from each one. Set up your Personal Tax Account on HMRC and you will be able to see what HMRC have details for your employment during the year.

    Definately one assignment with EA.
It was only through checking my HMRC account last year did I see how my tax was being calculated. YTD earning details for EA and the two UC are on, but are now missing the tax contributions.
