I'm not sure I can see any savings in getting a 3rd party insurance policy - not for a one-off trip at least...while I know it may cover things like tyres and windscreens, I used to rent via dollar.com and use the car hire insurance (primary) on my US credit card...the last few years it's been cheaper to rent via a UK 3rd party with insurance...the cost of doing that has either been less than renting through dollar.com without any coverage, or so very slightly more...so we swapped our approach.

Looking at our dates in Feb, via netflights or CH3000 about £130-£140 for a mid-size/intermediate...looking at dollar.com - $341.96, expedia.com not far off that...so way more expensive to book via a US site without insurance than a UK site with insurance waivers?

Would agree the annual policy does not hold much if any saving for a single trip, if you travel two or three times a year it makes a great difference

Not saying my Travel Patterns are NORMAL by any means, but

    My Next Trip for Example

Jan 7th Arrive LAX, Car Hired for 16 Days Through Hotwire Intermediate Size @ £6.20 a day (£123 with Taxes & Fees)

Driving from LA to Vegas to Cover CES & AX, Then back to LA for the Golden Globes, then have to fly to Puerto Rico for 2 days so leaving the hire car in LA, Back to LA then Drive out to Phoenix for a Job, 4 days there, then back to LA and return to the UK..

I think the Rule of thumb is if you are doing more than 21 days a year then the annual policy is cheaper. But totally agree with you that for single trips or the odd holiday its difficult to compete with the packages osme of the consolidators offer now.

Thanks, I hadn't considered Hotwire rentals in my thinking, so I can see why for some it would make sense now.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

No problem, and dont forget with Hotwire ,the "Silver" ones are not charged on booking but on return of car, and fully cancellable, so are a great backup as you can book one and dump it if a better deal comes along!

Happy New Year to you all!

Thanks Photome for the 2012 thread.

Was hoping to visit in March and August this year but due to unforseen circumstances can only do August but still very happy to be able to go!

I like to go direct from Manchester so very limited to airline choice (TC nd VA), Virgin fly on days that suit me better so was going to wait for sale but ended up booking just before Xmas.

Flight was approx 900pp economy (sorry no pound sign) so tried miles+money and it brought it down to 493+2000 miles pp Total of 1900 +8000 miles for 3 adults+1child. Booked it, only 222 days to go!

Can I ask what dates you've gone with as I'm struggling to find anything comparable.

Next trip for me is a solo one in March from 25th April 6th.
Have 12 days in total but thinking of driving to San Diego for a few days as this will be 5 in 5 years.

Any other ideas on stuff to do nearby, I've done Helicopter to GC and LA/San Fran.

Looking to book our summer trip, does anyone have experience of flying AA economy compared to BA world traveller? we'd be flying GLA to ORD then LAS to GLA and AA is working out about £100 cheaper between us

    cheers,

Zaffi - I would expect there to be not much difference between economy classes on major carriers. I'd be more inclined to compare things like flight times, departure times etc, seat config and plane setup on seatguru. Maybe check out AA ticket for platinum challenge to (doubtful it won't be .5 points per mile tho)

We have done AA from MAN and BA from LHR. Different plane types but both meant we ended up in a row of 3. AA plane had only aisle TV's. Our next AA ten hour flight has seat back TV's tho and pairs of seats throughout the plane so it varies wildly. Basically, is it worth the extra 100 for comfort is what I'd look at :)

Thanks, yeah those seem to be the clinchers, especially flight times and stops.
Had a look on seatguru and saw this:

"The BA 777-300 is the newest aircraft in the fleet.
This aircraft is configured with four classes and features all of the airline's newest inflight products. Currently it operates routes to Chicago, India, and the Middle East" - so thats not too bad!

The cheaper return AA flights from vegas seem to be 2 stops the one stop flights are as or more expensive than BA. Also the BA flight leaves at 8pm giving almost a full final day.

I think the extra with BA should be worth it, now the hotel hunt begins.....

I pre-paid a full tank of fuel on a Dodge Caliber on my credit card, and it cost £34 with an exchange rate of 1.52

Which i thought was a bargain, comparable to the £60 it would cost over here.
