Why on earth are the government, who own the Post Office using a private firm to deliver post, thats crazy!

Because the private firm will be doing it for less.....

Even the Gov. Has to look at cutting costs.

Anyway. Post Office and Royal Mail split a while ago and are 2 seperate entities.

The Post Office remains part of the Royal Mail Group.

Ah no. I see that the PO is now owned directly by HMG as of 1st April this year.

Royal Mail is being lined up for privatisation but Post Office Ltd is remaining in public ownership - see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17807772

In what other line of work would you be expected to give your competition a helping hand to compete with you?

Several privatised public monopolies spring to mind.

Our electricity network is managed by Scottish Power but we buy off e-on
Our phone line is owned and maintained by BT but we don't rent the line off them
    Ditto internet service provider
I work for a bank and we outsource to Santander and HSBC for various services
    etc
    Ethical moneysaver

    Not really comparable though
RM are dealing with the part of the business that has the highest cost
    Thats the issue
When you outsource to Santander & HSBC. Are they forced to charge your bank less than it costs to do the work?

I'd say that's only because people have ridiculous expectations as to how profitable it is to transport a letter across the entire country and deliver it to someones door within 24 hours for 60p is...

All they can think of is "well, it worked before so it should work forever" - completely ignoring the fact hardly anyone sends letters any more and there is a pretty major thing called "economy of scale".
