Hi new on here and praying someone can help? I took out a payday loan of £150 to be paid back on the 30th dec, Couldnt make my payment and have tried and tried to call wonga.com to arrange payment for end of Jan, however im on hold for 15mins at a time and cant get through or they cut me off, They have sent me 3 e mails and now state i owe them £292, I have cancelled my card and heard horror stories of them clearing out accounts, Is it right i now owe so much?? dont know what to do please help _pale_

Without wishing to be rude, you now ask a forum full of people "Is it right I now owe so much??". Why on earth did you get a loan when you clearly have no understanding of the terms?
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything
  • Thanks for all the advise, I cancelled my card to stopp them "dipping into my account" I do intend to pay in full however by using the account details i now have for their account, lesson learned, and yes these people did help me when i needed help and yes i maybe a fool however once in this situation its really hard to get out. Thanks again though for the help and support given. :j
  • Now I am a little worried by this company. Today I received a letter stating that I had taken a loan with them for £450.05, not only had I not taken a loan out with them I had never heard of them before. I looked on their web site and found a phone number, which I phoned, 20 minutes later no reply, then I noticed on the web site it said 10p a minute. I then went onto their live chat service, I advsed the person "Mario" that I had not taken out a loan with them, he said I had to get a crime number from the police and someone would call me, I asked when he said by 4pm. So I waited and guess what no phone call, I then emailed, then I contacted the live chat and told Mario that I had not received a phone call, he said they were busy. I received a reply to the email telling me to phone the number I had previoulsy phoned.
Now this is a fraud and this money must have been paid somewhere, wouldnt they want to investigate this matter urgently. !!
This is a company where people obtain loans, people short of money, so what is with the phone line that costs 10p per minute.
I have passed this to Trading Standards very suspect if you ask me.

Might have been better to start your own thread on this.
Surely you have access to a bank statement showing the repayment?
  • Hi i too owe them money that has escalated from what the first debt was, each time i tried to call to discuss it i could never get through and waited long periods of time on hold. They have now handed over my account to a debt recovery company but i have been informed by my solicitor who is dealing with my debts that it seems as though the same debt recovery company seems to be the same as wonga so i don't know whats going on there! up till now my solicitor has not received any response back about the offer made to them and so far i have not heard anything so do not stress go and seek some legal advice and get help as soon as possible otherwise it will ruin your life.

The Debt-free Wannabe board usually advises you do not speak to this sort of shark by telephone - write a letter and it will arrive the following day, your contact will be tracked if you use recorded delivery. If you can only afford to pay part of the debt off, send a cheque: this demonstrates you are not trying to default and reduces your liability for interest.

Their landline telephone number is 0871 288 5704. Yes it does cost 10p a minute, this is hardly a scam when 1000s of companies get away with using 0871 numbers. My bank and ISP insist on using 0871 and 0844 numbers and often have me holding for a long time.

I've used the company in the past, and probably will again. I'm not up to my eyeballs in debt (in fact owe about a tenth of what I did 5 years ago), but occasionally I've needed to use them when a car repair has occurred the wrong side of payday. I've been fully aware of their terms, and also know how misleading APR can be when applied to short term loans. For instance, they don't want to lend to you for a year, so why would a yearly calculation be appropriate? A separate calculation is needed for these types of loans (and also for overdrafts, bank charges etc) so a proper comparison can be made.

My own situation is that I needed £250 for 14 days. Paid it off on payday and that was that. A few months later came home to find water all over the floor. I couldn't afford to buy a washing machine so checked out Wonga again - this time borrowed £400 initially for 14 days again but paid this off within 5 days - if I remember correctly paid only £25 in charges. That's less that what my bank would have charged me if I'd gone over my limit.

It's not intended to be used by those people robbing Peter to pay Paul, or who are at the point of desperation. As they credit check, it's likely such people will be filtered out at application stage.

They do allow you to settle at any point during the loan. Most of their competitors insist on the loan being fixed so at least you can reduce any interest charges if you've got funds before the collection date.

It could be argued that I could use my credit card to do exactly the same thing. Although I've got a credit card, I use this for petrol and other work expenses, and get this repaid by my employer at the end of the month. My limit on this is low, this was requested by me - the last time I had a huge limit on my credit card was when I got into trouble (every purchase was justified as an 'emergency'). I'm not going there again so requested a low limit.

I know that this sounds like I'm a Wonga employee, but I'm not. I agree that some people should avoid such companies like the plague, their problems will not be solved by this company but will compound them. However, for people like me it's worked.
    Competition wins:
    2010 - approx £450. 2011 - approx £800. 2012 - approx £300. 2013 - nothing so far!

Whilst I agree that these companies should be avoided, they do have their usefulness to clients and I suppose it keeps people from stealing money, doesn't it?

My partner has used them a few times now and they have been pretty good. Interest rates are high but they tell you what you will owe when you sign up. Only problem we have had with them is that they tried to take the payment a day early once so it got refused. Quick phonecall sorted it out though
