Question for parents, my four year old is having school dinners (although she has today said she sometimes wants to take sandwiches like the other kids) obviously this means she is getting a hot meal so what should I give her for tea (I prepare it and my dad gives her it so has to be easy) in the holidays she would have sandwiches for lunch and something warm for tea so therefore should i reverse this and give her sandwiches at tea time?

I think it would depend on the weather (i.e if its really cold outside then I would imagine she would want something warm for tea just not a proper dinner if that makes sense) and if she is hungry.

My DD1 has packed lunch everyday and DD2 has sandwiches at home but I sometimes give them sandwiches/picnic type food for dinner if they are not hungry or they have something on toast or a proper dinner but a smaller amount.

  • I am new to this challenge.

We are 2 adults & 2 children (7 & 5). I am budgeting only £120 for all of our food, toiletries & household products. It does not include eating out etc as my husband & I each have an amount budgeted to us to spend. I also have approx 1/2 of my milk delivered from Milkman & am not including that as have budgeted seperately. This is more a case of we have to (why else would I have it so low, I guess)!

I made a meal plan plan for the whole month & then made a shopping list based on that. I did a big shop to start off & then only expect to have to top up fruit, bread, sandwich fillings, milk etc.

Will enter spend to date tomorrow

Does anyone have any tried and tested recipes like this they could share with me please

Well, only £7.43 spent today between a couple of shops. Bread, loads of reduced mushrooms [to cut up for the freezer] and very reduced [8p a pack at Mr T! I feel like a student again...] Maggi noodles, even some over-door hook things went in the basket [but I've been looking for some of those for ages, and they were only £1.50]. That's our first spend since Sunday, so I'm quite :D about the NSDs stacking up, and the limited spends when shopping does happen.

[BTW: Rather strange experience yesterday - went into Mr S for a couple of things, but they didn't have exactly what I wanted to I came out with nothing. I never do that! Or maybe I do now... ]

I just hope we can keep this up - I think we'd both rather spend the unspent grocery money on a night or two in Brighton next month instead!:rotfl:

Keep up the good work, everyone. :T
Haven't done the GC since February, but a glance at the Tower of Receipts tells me I really need to get back into it... and plenty of other Challenges besides. :o
  • NSD for me today, but tomorrow (Thursday) I will have to go and get milk and stuff. I bought a £6 big chicken in Sainsburys at the weekend and we have had three meals off of it already and tonight I managed to make a chicken and mushroom pasta bake for tomorrow night's dinner, plus I simmered the carcass for stock for soup, which I will make tomorrow for lunches for me for a few days.

I am really making an effort to give the kids packed lunches - DD2 can't go out at lunchtime but DD1 can and she goes to Sainsburys and spends at least £4 a day if I don't give her a lunch. I have stopped giving them crisps and have been making biscuits and buns - today I made custard cookies and millies cookies (but without the chocolate chips - I had to use raisins and cranberries as I have loads of them). They were both lovely but we only have about 5 of each left now so probably not worth the calories ....

Clover is on BOGOF (£2.25) at Co-op so I will stock up on that tomorrow, as I use it for my cupcakes and I have an order for an arrangement for a 50th at the weekend.

My microwave is currently broken and I was thinking tonight that we haven't really missed it so I might not replace it.

  • :hello: Evening everyone. Or middle of the night, whatever.

Just in to update totals; spent £1.32 today on sweeties to decorate some cupcakes I'm planning to make for a hen do this weekend. Was going to count the ingredients for these separately since they're not for me to eat but actually think I can do it within budget, fingers crossed.

Still haven't actually gone to the shops and bought f+v, butter, milk etc like I've been meaning to all week. Am being very inventive with what's in the house instead, but that's mainly out of sheer laziness. Went out for lunch today too, someone else's treat, and ate loads, so didn't need much this evening.

Plan for tomorrow; Chinese supermarket, greengrocer, L*dl, T*sco. Need mountains of butter for baking and making the icing, also need yoghurt, eggs, milk & muesli. And some fresh fruit, because I've not eaten any today. Have just had to make green tea instead of regular because the only milk I've got in is on the turn and it tasted a bit funny, so I'll be making a batch of scones too. Any excuse. :rotfl:

Hope everyone else is doing ok, off to have a quick catch up before bed.
