Specsavers at Lowestoft seem to be shooting themselves in the foot. I have been with them for 3 years now and due to family health problems I have to have an eye test every year. Both myself and my daughter had an appointment booked this week but on the morning of my daughters appointment, both she and her 1 year old son had streaming colds. She phoned Lowestoft Specsavers as soon as they opened to cancel her appointment only to be put on hold for several minutes finally to be told that she would be charged £10 for missing her appointment, maybe she should have carted both herself and her baby down to Specsavers at Lowestoft and shared their cold germ with the staff and customers.
My appointment was the following day at 12 noon, I was 5 minutes early and was greeted by the receptionist but only after she had finished her conversation with another member of staff. I was asked to take a seat with the other dozen or so customers where I waited for about 20 minutes before my name was called. An optical assistant took me to a desk where she filled in some details on an NHS form and asked me to sign. I then was taken to a room where two tests were carried out on my eyes, I was again asked to go to the waiting area.
After about 45 minutes I was called by the optician and given a thorough test. The optician was very processional and took time to explain everything to me and after my examination he asked me to go back to the waiting area for a peripheral vision test to be carried out by one of the optical assistants. Whilst waiting, I sat next to a retired gentleman with a walking stick who told me he had been waiting 1hour 50 minutes. As we both sat watching, the optical assistants would go to the rack where the patients notes and records were stacked in order, they would then sift through and would take them from the middle of the pile rather than the next one in line (if you are going to cheat your customers, at least be bright enough to make sure that you are not being watched). After another 30 minutes of zero contact, I walked out of the shop. I think that the whole time I was in the shop apart from the time I was with the optician, the only words spoken to me was "put your chin on the pad and look at the green spot" but it was twice as there was two machines. The shop staff seem to have a surly, couldn't care less attitude towards their customers. What a shame that the trained optician`s processional attitude during my examination is badly let down by the lack of customer care shown towards the customers by the shop staff. I purchase two pairs of glasses each year and my daughter was coming to Specsavers of Lowestoft after moving to this area, but of course we will both be voting with our feet, neither of us will go back to this shop. I wonder it the holder of the Specsavers of Lowestoft franchise realises that the unprofessional treatment towards customers by this dreadful staff attitude is losing him money.
    Shame...Should have gone to Boots.

Should have read before posting perhaps?

    Explanation?
  • I would like to know what actual diagnosis and information the opticians at specsavers can actually make when i went for my last eye test in october i was informed there and then that they had noticed a mole on the back of my eye , i asked if this had something to do with the constant migraines i was getting and was told bluntly "Oh no its probably Cancer" 1st of all can they make this diagnosis or are they just there to give out a prescription for glasses and 2nd of all what the hell i could not get an appointment with an eye specialist at my hospital despite this opticians referral until Feb 15th thankfully after months of fears and making myself ill and telling my family that this was a possibility i got the all clear and was told it was nothing to worry about i was born with this .....
So my question is how do i complain against my treatment i received by this so called Professional ?????
  • Hi, I went into Specsavers in Ealing Broadway just over a week ago with a voucher for a free eye test and £49 pair of glasses if I needed them for VDU usage. If I wanted designer glasses I could have up to £45 off those (again if I needed them for display use).
I already had a pair and was told previously (less than 2 years ago) that I was VDU only and the optomotrist said my right eye had gotten a tiny bit worse (only a tiny bit). The sales woman said I needed glasses for general use and should wear them all the time (which meant I only get £20 off!).
    R Sph -.5. cyl -1.5, axis 30
L Sph -.25, Cyl -1.25, axis 175 is my prescription. I have been told this should still be "vdu/display use only" and if this is true then Specsavers are endangering the health of my eyes by scaring me into wearing specs all the time (just to make £25 extra!). The woman did say "you need them generally" "all the time" and also "for driving, watching tv and working" so I questioned her contradicting herself and she said "all the time". Can someone help? Thanks,
    Al
  • Hi,

I recently went to Specsavers for my glasses and contact lens test and was given false information on lens mail scheme. Beware !

I am a contact lens wearer for 14 years now and have purchased my lenses from abroad. What pulled me to Specsavers was the convenience of lens mail and direct debit scheme.

My lens trial went well and on my follow-up appointment I was told the lens type suited me well, to which I agree. I then went to enrol myself to the lensmail and direct debit scheme and was told that for my eye power I can’t be given the direct debit or mailing option L

Nowhere in the store (even in small print) did I see that the lens mail option is available for people with certain eye power only. I have the option of ordering batches of lens from the store, but can’t be given the option of ordering this by direct debit ? The reason given to me by the store staff was that my eye power was high and they can’t get me on direct debit scheme.

Didn’t they know this when they gave me a trial pair ? I was constantly told I can get the lens at my door, direct debits, after care, etc and feel have been completely mis-guided right from the beginning :(
  • I was quite disappointed today when trying to book an appointment for my two children during the school holidays, to be told that they only see children after 4pm! I know that this must be a new policy as I have usually taken my children in during the day. My local store is in Kings Lynn Norfolk, does anyone else know if their store is the same? It's annoying for me as I live rurally & am able to go shopping in town once a week on a Wednesday morning & wanted to fit my children's eye appointments in with my weekly shop. Should have gone to specsavers has changed to couldn't go to specsavers! Can anyone recommend a good opticians?
  • I'm not surprised by all these complaints about specsavers. According to the Times Rich List the owner of Specsavers Dame Mary Perkins is a billionaire. You must need to sell an awful lot of glasses to make a billion pounds. Presumably there is no profit to be made by testing children before 4pm but for the life of me I cant see why. The frames they sell for children cost pence to make in Chinese sweat shops and they charge the NHS £36 for them. Their opticians are all working on commisiion if they dont prescribe glasses to enough people they get the sack. They call it the Conversion Rate that is the percentage of people through their door that they sell glasses to. When I was there the optician had left her computer on and it was a message from head office about how to increase the conversion rate. So if youre at Specsavers and the optician says you need new glasses I would check whether you really do or whether its just to increase the Conversion Rate.
  • Hi all,

I have just received a similar message to the one 'Rachael' sent to Sublime 2.

I made a simple enquiry in response to a letter from Specsavers, and the 3 responses I've received from different customer services 'Specialists' is beyond belief. I've had the broken record syndrome, asking for my address, postcode and date of birth. No response to my enquiry whatsoever.

I have now contacted Doug Perkins ( thank you, Sirmarcus).

Whether or not I hear from them again, I will now change my Optician, as I've had more than enough from these incompetent numpties.
  • There seems to be no way to complain about a branch.
I am a customer at the Peckham London branch and the service is absolutely appalling that one can expect to wait about 30 minutes by a recetionist before one is seen and that is even with an appointment.
Staff ask if they can help and when you think you are being served they walk off to talk to someone else without as much as an apology or explanation.
I broke an arm on my glasses which I got from Specsavers and was told it meant another frame for which I was charged £10. I was told to call in the shop last Wednesday when a pair would be ready for me. I went and waited 45 minutes for the staff to see if the frames had arrived and locate them. I was then told that they didn't THINK they had arrived. THINK? THEY DON'T KNOW? I was told to call in again even though they have both my telephone numbers.
I cannot afford to keep taking time off to be messed around. No complaints procedure. Staff who seem clueless. Staff wasting my time. An horrendous experience.
I called in again the following day arriving soon after the shop opened, I had to endure the same unprofessional approaches of staff.
Nothing was gained by being virtually the only customer in the store.
Never will I again recommend Specsavers and will instead go to Vision Express and in Peckham advise everyone to do likewise.
