    train is a great service

I travelled to Torremolinos last year for 9days in June.
Great tip is to get the train from the airport to your resort saves loads. Its a great service and costs less than 2euros a trip. Torremolinos is like 11minutes away. Also great to go from Torremolinos to Fuengirola or Benalmedena

google 'renfe cercanias malaga' for service information

you can also get the bus from the airport direct to Marbella bus station - only costs just under 5 euros per person and takes only 45 mins - much better than a 70 euro cab!!

Also visit Tarifa further down the coast for beautiful beaches!!

Also, for the real money savers out there looking for a few drinks - go to the famous Puerto Banus strip (one street behind all the designer shops) and drink all night for free! just get the free drinks and shots from the touts trying to get you into the bars and then move onto the next one, all free! just pay for your taxi ride home

Also visit the Old Town in Marbella for a more cultural experience - its beautiful there! and they do great paella, ice cream and the church is amazing

It's great to get the train from the Airport to Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Los Bolichos and Fuengirola (as far as the train goes) but please check where abouts you are staying in relation to the Railway Station or you may find yourself walking for miles.

If you are in Benalmadena then Paloma Park is a must if you have kids with you (or without) No entry fee, lots of animals and birds including peacocks roaming about in there, others in pens like goats and emus. Large lake with fish, ducks, swans and turtles and a play area with climbing frames and slides etc. Family cyclos for hire. Plenty of shaded grassy areas where you can picnic if you want.
Cacti garden with over 500 varieties - big bonus - clean toilets and bar and refreshment areas.

Just a short walk from the seafront area - look for the Windmill road island and it is just up the hill on the left hand side of the road.

Look for Lidl supermarket - one on the main Torremolinos/Benalmadena road and one in Benalmadena but it is up in the town past Tivoli World going towards Benalmadena Pueblo.

The Pueblo is a nice village to visit - you can go on the local bus -
lots of photos here. Sit in the square with a nice cold drink and watch the world go by.

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=benalmadena+pueblo&hl=en&biw=1024&bih=579 &prmd=ivnsm&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=cOI mTuyxMozu-ga4p4HwCw&sqi=2&ved=0CDYQsAQ

Also near to the Pueblo is The Stupa -

    http://www.stupabenalmadena.org/en/introduction_en.html

In my opionion one of the best views of the coast from outside the Stupa.

We stayed in Fuengirola in April 2011 at the Fuengirola Beach Hotel which is on the far edge of town and used the train from Malaga airport. Great service as already stated but it only cost us 7 Euros each way from the train station to the hotel which is far cheaper than any airport transfers. Also if you are staying at this hotel or any nearby there is a fantastic Eroski supermarket just across the road which is great and very reasonably priced for anything you might need if you are on a self catering basis. Also good for stocking up on cheap alcohol/water for in your room if you have a fridge.

Stay away from the beach if you are wanting to eat and drink cheaply.
Arroyo de la mille just up the hill has great food at reasonable prices.
Paloma park is free and lovely to walk through.
Catch the 2nd hand market at the top of Paloma park on Wednesday morning. This has a lot of new things for sale like the normal market but at a fraction of the price. The normal market is on Friday at Tivoli.
Train from airport is approx 1.5 Euros. We usually get a taxi from Benalmadena/Arroyo Station to our apartment for 5 Euros, So it is 6.5 euros versus 25-30 euros in the taxi.
Take a towel to the beach and lay on the sand. Sunbeds are 4 Euros each per day.
If you want to book a car then have a good search on the internet and compare prices. You will always get better prices this way and always pick up the car at the airport, never in the resort.

anyone using the train to get to/from the airport to their resort should have a look round plaza mayor (1st stop after the airport heading to fuengirola) plenty good shops especially the nike factory shop.

We have visited the Costa del Sol several times in recent years. Out top tips are
    Malaga
Do not overlook this city which is easily accessible by bus and train. Malaga has something for everyone - modern upmarket shops, an interesting old town, magnificent cathedral, the Alcazaba (Moorish fortress) and castle (Castillo de Gibralfaro). A good way of exploring the city is the hop on/hop off tourist bus.
    Puerto Cabopino
Situated roughly midway between Fuengirola and Marbella this can be reached by bus as well as car. Part of the area is a (very rare) unspoilt section of coast with a beautiful sandy beach. There is an attractive marina, smaller and more intimate than Puerto Banus, with a selection of reasonably priced restaurants.
    'Holiday Guide'
This free newspaper is available from hotels, restaurants and bars. It is a great source of information about restaurants, bars, entertainment and the Costa del Sol generally.

Look out for the 'Menu del Dia' options at all restaurants. (Usually only available at 'lunchtime' - 1200hrs - 1600hrs)

Eg - Mandarin Chinese restaurant right on the seafront by Yaramar Hotel in Los Boliches. Eu4.95 for THREE COURSES! (This includes the option of an ice cream or a coffee for desert).
    The food is plenty!
(NB Full menu prices in eve standard, so make sure you order before 4pm as they are very strict on this)

FUENGIROLA PORT (Eastern end near Linekars) - on corner on roundabout RED/WHITE cafe. Eu3.50 for plate of tapas. (Usual price of drinks now about Eu1.50 on coast, cheaper the further inland you go.)

Eu1.70? (long time since I used the service, but not expensive. This is price each way, you cannot buy a return ticket)..... bus from Fuengirola to pretty white washed mountain village of MIJAS PUEBLO (30 min ride, but only 7km away.) Stunning views of coast, very pretty and unspoiled traditional village. But do watch out for 'tourist prices' in the squares. However, this said, two cafes as you approach the bus station very resaonable as locals use them.

Tip - Coffee is cheaper if you have it in a glass (un vaso - 'Bahso') rather than a ceramic cup/saucer.
Likewise, 'Un Cana or Tubo' (Canya, toobo) - a glass of beer is cheaper than the bottled variety.

    !Buen Viaje!

Take a towel to the beach and lay on the sand. Sunbeds are 4 Euros each per day.

This is wrong on a day like today - just walked past the beach and at 32c you would fry just laying there on a towel. At least you would have to buy an umberella from somewhere like the Chinese shop (almost like UK pound shops but with more expensive goods in them).
Lots of people walking about with burned bodies - look very sore but still they in the blazing sun without their shirts.

If you do make a day trip to Gibraltar you can buy your cigarettes there a lot cheaper than Spain - not been for a while but someone may know. Buy them from Morrisons as some of the shops on the main road have been know to sell fakes (I know - I was that person!!)
Only 200 per person over the age of 18yrs and 1 litre of Spirits.

Cheap day tours from along the coast - Torremolenos to Estepona?
Any of the hotels offer 3rd party coach tours.
30 GBP upwards for guided tour.
Take cheapest option - 8 quid? for return coach trip to Gib on the 'Shopping Special'
(If you do want to do the tours on arrival - cable car etc.. you will have to pay extra. But you won't really have the time!)
I.e 2.5 hrs each way as the coach stops along the coast.
