Do council houses have asbestos in the walls?
I was drilling the stud wall yesterday and noticed another layer behind the plasterboard (which isnt the plasterboard on the other side of the wall i checked :rotfl:) I am assuming that its asbestos or other fire retarding, i think the houses were built in the 50 - 60s. Would this be correct?

Do Blower/Vacs Really Work with leaves?
Our new home is surrounded by huge oak trees in neighbouring gardens and fields. I've been thinking about getting a blower/vac and just wondered if anybody could recommend one please? Also I could see how this could work on the patio and lawn etc but we have quite a lot of ornamental gravel in the garden too. Would the vac…

huge horrible hedge problem
Just bought and moved into a house with a long narrow garden. There's a huge ( about 12 ft high, 8 ft wide ) hedge running the entire length, I checked before buying that it was on my side of the boundary so could be removed. It also intrudes into next doors garden and may well have taken root on that side too. Now here's…

Slightly leaky gate valve?
On our central heating we have what I call a gate valve, it sits on the bypass pipe in the airing cupboard. It's leaking ever so slightly out of the collar, do I need to drain the whole system down to sort it out? I've tightened the collar a bit but it still leaks (although less so). Instead of drainign down, can I turn…

What does he mean when he says ''put in a brick damp proof course''
Mine isn't a straightforward situation or question. We've got a plaster and lath wall. Because there is rising damp, the wooden uprights have rotted at the base. The wall is still stable and the frame-work intact. We're having damp-proof works done and this particular wall is having zinc backed plasterboard both sides.…

low energy bulbs: simple question...
I have many light fittings that specify 60W max (standard) bulbs. I have, of course, put in 11W low energy bulbs. These are pretty good, but give off slightly less light. So my simple question is this: can I put 18W low energy bulbs into standard "60W max" fittings? (Hope so!) I'm sure this must have been asked before but…

The best way to draughtproof a small letterbox?
I have a small letterbox, which doesn't have any form of draughtproofing.:eek: In my attempt to stop some of the draughts downstairs, I'm hoping to draughtproof it. I did try a standard size some time ago, but failed miserably - I can't remember why though. :rotfl: Anyway, the hole where my bills are shoved through,…
