Being used at work
Hi, I'm so sorry I could really use some advice - I understand in advance if I got called rotten things. I feel horribly used by my temporary employer and come to a point I don't feel I can afford to be in my current job. I've had less then 7 days holiday to cope with whereas a temp has had nearly 7 weeks on the same…

First Time As Self Employed Optician "Locum" - any tips before starting, how to declare tax etc
Since qualifying over 10 years ago. I have never locum before and this will be my first time. I've always wanted to but the biggest reason why I've never locum is I don't know how to declare my tax as being self employed and I don't want to fall back on this. However, I have come to a stage in my career where I feel this…

Wrong wages on HMRC
I have been in my current employment for nearly 4 years. I have just found out from the HMRC on the gateway site that they have my old wages on the system from about 3 years ago. I had rises of about £5000 in total since then. The problem is the HMRC have still not got the correct wages I am on. It is still £2000 lower…

Company withholding pay
I handed in my notice a few weeks back. My employer wasn’t happy about this but there has been a lot of change recently, they haven’t been taking any engineers opinions on board so I’ve found something better suited. I planned on working my entire notice and leaving on good terms, though actions from senior management have…

6 month notice to get paid bonus
my employer has told us that if we don’t sign a new contract with a new 6 month notice period (regardless of where you go) we won’t be paid any bonus or be eligible for the bonus scheme. It seems excessive. Is this allowed?

Claiming Expenses
Hi I currently claim the HMRC AER for my EV company car for all business mileage, and most of my car charging is done at home. However, for the times when I do need to charge on public chargers, the AER does not cover the true cost and I end up funding business mileage from my own pocket. Am I within my rights to submit a…

47, low wage, frustrated
Hello! I'm 47 and just started my new job, 25K pa. I'm frustrated, as I really want to earn a better salary. I came to this country nearly twenty years ago, I worked in some low-paid jobs and run my cleaning business for nearly a decade . It worked well for me, as I was raising my young son. I applied for a bank job in…

Off work now formal meeting
Asking for someone else. She has been off work from a well known supermarket for 15 weeks, due to mental health and anxiety issues (suffered since early teens), recently requiring hospital treatment for self harm. Double notice period - which would apply?
I've been terminated last week, after working 13 months, effective immediately. The employer sent out a letter of termination that states they will pay the notice in lieu (aka PILON), but it doesn't say how much/long so I checked the contract and I'm confused - a single clause has 3 notice periods mentioned: * one week -…

Returning Company Car
I have just resigned from a role and I have been told that I am now obliged to have to return the company car back to the business. This will involve a 6 hour drive up to the office, and then having to find a way back ( they have offered to purchase a train ticket) I have suggested that the car is collected by means of a…

Notice period in a temporary job
Hi, Appreciate I’m being selfish but I feel I’m getting ever more stuck in a quiet job, for example on return 2nd January I’d caught up on the ‘Xmas shut down build up’ by 10:30am working alone. You can’t do cleaning to while the time away as there is already a cleaner on site and I don’t want to start doing 2 jobs for the…

How to format CV
Some time ago I had an online session with a job coach both as group and individually. The CV advice was to save in a Microsoft Word 97-03 format and to make it ATS friendly. In my individual session he advised me to keep my CV the same because it was getting me plenty of interviews and my issue was not passing the…
