Council Tax - Single Persons Discount Review
Hello folks I have lived alone in a flat I own in the Epping Forest District Council area and been claiming my single persons discount for many years. My girlfriend is Taiwanese and been over here studying for her PhD as a full time student. She moved in with me in the autumn of 2020 but, as a full time student, would not…

Council Tax Band Reduction
I have tried unsuccessfully on two occasions to get my council tax band reduced. I guess this might be my last attempt even though I know I am 100% correct and have been banded wrongly. I bought my property in Q4 1986 for £34000. I find it impossible to believe my property doubled in price to £68001 (Bottom of the Band D…

Wrong council band?
Hi. My parents think their house is in the wrong band. My dad contacted them about it a few years ago and they told him to find a property similar/same size as our within 2 miles that's a different tax band. But he couldn't see ones that were similar except the ones down our cul de sac. My parents house is a detached house…

Money Moral Dilemma: Should I give my old neighbour some money for the council tax refund he got us?
This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks... My former neighbour had always rented out his property. He put it up for sale, was left paying council tax on it for the first time and was adamant it was in the wrong band, so he submitted a big report and the band was reduced - for him, me and some other houses. We all got…

Council Tax Banding Scotland
Having seen Martin Lewis' advice on council tax banding, we discovered that we are a council tax band higher (F) compared to all of our neighbours in same sized semi-detached or some living even in fully detached properties. On the appeals page it says, appeals can only be made 6 months after moving in, but we live in the…

TAX Band - VOA unhelpful
Hello all, for years (13 to be specific) I thought I was paying to much Council TAX with my TAX band being incorrect. I recently saw a post on the MSE site around how to challenge your TAX Band and have absolutely hit a wall with the VOA and found progressing pretty much impossible regardless of having a case. So I'm…

Council Tax Challenge
Hi, I moved into my house last September and have just checked my neighbours council tax band. Most in my area are Band E but I am Band F. I have used the 'Estimate your home's value' calculator which advises I should be in Band G. Should I go ahead and challenge my band as I feel the houses in Band E are larger than mine?

Wrong council tax band
Hi all Has anyone managed to claim back overpayment of council tax if you have been in the wrong band but still owning the house but not living there. I bought the house in 2002 and paid council tax until my daughter moved in and started paying the council tax. I do not live at the property but still own it. Thanks for…

Council Tax - New Build
We bought our new build property in 2018 and the site was developed on an old hospital site with farmland surrounding us with no other residential properties nearby. I'm currently getting information to contest our council tax band (currently in C) as it seems to be too high for the value of the property. Due to no houses…

Council tax banding.
I saw the clip of Martin Lewis explaining about challenging your council tax band. I looked into it and unsure if it’s worth going for it. I live in a cul-de-sac with a majority of the properties being large detached houses with garages or bungalows with garages all of which are in bad D or E. well myself and my neighbour…

Council Tax after death,
Hi, long story short. my father died in 2012, my brother was the executor of the will, fathers house to be divided equally between us. We had a few problems with the house before we could sell it. My brother then died during covid before he could execute my fathers wishes as probate was delayed. It was then left to me to…

Council Tax Date liable
I was left a property when a family member died in 2021. I applied for ascension of the property to my name through Land Registry in March 2022. I had to have the property registered to me before a mortgage would be given therefore this was not given until June 2022. When I moved in to the property i was hit with a bill of…

Lease holder debt
This might be a complicated one as stay with me. About 10 years ago I rented out my flat which was a lease hold. I emailed the building management company (who happen to be a housing association) to let them know what I was doing and told them to bill my tenant. They didn’t email me back so I figured that was that. The…

Council tax re banding claim whilst probate is processed.
Hi, My brother sadly passed recently and we are in the very early stages of the probate process to deal with his estate. Whilst sorting thru the necessary documentation it is very clear that his property is in the wrong Council tax band (last house in street at a different band). My question is that is it possible to…

Insurance question - Reclaiming
When I bought my first house in 2014 the mortgage broker which owned their own insurance company said I needed to pay 78 and 45 a month for separate policies for home insurance and contents, they failed to tell me i could source my own and pay a lot less. They gave me the impression I could not and I felt I had no choice…
