New to the Disability Money Matters board? Start here
This board is a discussion of all issues surrounding disability and how they relate to MoneySaving. Discussing benefits, discounts, cheaper ways to see consultants, cashback for alternative health treatments, how to get specific medication cheaper (legally) are all perfectly acceptable forms of discussion. Claiming Attendance Allowance for profoundly deaf 91 year old.
Hi all, My Father is 91. He has been diagnosed profoundly deaf for over 20 years. Additionally, he suffers from Tinitus which affects his balance, he has a heart condition and is quite frail. We recently applied for Attendance Allowance to help us support him but last week we received a letter saying no because 'he did not…

Please Read - Not A Disability Money Question As Such, It's About Service Dogs
My friend, who has a long-term mental health condition, is considering getting an assistance dog. Her medical team supports her in this decision. However, there doesn't seem to be a central registry that confirms a dog's status as an assistance dog. While most people recognize Guide Dogs for the Blind, numerous other…

Moving house - getting help to clear house
Not massively disabled (but do have a blue badge) but do have back issues.... It makes it difficult now to move stuff around. Move stuff into storage. An hour or so loading the car etc means 3-4 days of pain. Just wondered how poor people even worse off than me manage with things like this. Is there someone you can pay…

PIP Appeal
The DWP have submitted their response but there is a basic error in there reasoning. They have declared that I do not have not have any mental health issues anymore. But I have been on antipsychotics and antidepressants for the last 6 years with a diagnosis of Delusional Disorder and my symptoms are ongoing. The medication…

Pip - Planning and following journeys
My daughter has been awarded standard rate mobility but I think it should be enhanced. She has no physical impediment to walking but she will only leave the house once maybe twice a week and only if I accompany her. She had to quit college as I was not able to take her and she was unable to use the bus due to her level of…

UC vs social care financial assessment / costs
As I understand things, the "disallowed" element under a financial assessment is about £190 per week (the "personal allowance" £160 plus a top up for "disability" £30). If a family member is accessing daily local authority funded services, such as day centre activities, etc, is there any point in claiming / receiving the…

Private ambulance
Not sure if this is the right place to post so please forgive. I wondered if anyone had any experience of private ambulances and what they cost? I ask because my 95 year old Mum had a fall in her home and it took 8 hrs for an NHS ambulance to take her to A&E, with her on the floor. Sadly this seems common. I Would pay for…

Do councils have a deadline to relocate elderly people in nursing homes?
I'm currently trying to help my 80 year old mother relocate close to family since her husband died and she's left alone where she is without visitors. We've approached the council to have her relocated and a face to face meet went very well. But for the past two weeks we haven't been able to even contact our social worker…

Severe Disability Premium hasn't been paid for years!
I'm hoping this is the correct Forum for me to ask for advice. My adult child (aged 28yrs) is in receipt of PIP both highest rates of mobility and care. They also receive Income Related ESA. They receive full housing benefit and full council tax benefit. They moved out from my house aged approximately 19 or 20 so…

Motability vs buying vehicle outright?
I am toying with the idea of a new car and am attempting to weigh
up the pro’s/cons of going down the Motability route versus simply buying
outright. Although I have been eligible for years, I have never used (nor even really
looked into) the Motability scheme. I have always bought outright and paid for my
adaptions. I…

Deprivation of Assets ?
Hello - I'm thinking of Will making and if there are any implications for a local Council considering it as 'deprivation of assets' if we do not leave all (non property) assets to the surviving spouse? e.g. if my wife and I both have Wills made so that (instead of all assets going to the surviving spouse) that cash and…

Care home fees following dementia diagnosis
Hi My mum was recently diagnosed with vascular dementia following a stroke and is currently in hospital. She's got no short term memory at all unfortunately, and is highly confused, so it's looking likely she'll have to be discharged to a care home. She owns a 1 bedroom flat where she lives on her own (leasehold, mortgage…

PIP Query
I know PIP isn't classed as taxable income, but does anyone know if receiving PIP affects the amount of Personal Savings Allowance you are entitled to?

Can I post Attendance Allowance form to a REAL address?
Hi, In December my mum filled out the Attendance Allowance form and posted it off. She had wanted to send Special Delivery but the post office said she could not do so, as it was a freepost address. Fast forward to now and she's heard nothing so called up last week. Was told they haven't received it, which means she now…

Help with car?
Hi My sister is in receipt of PIP but lower rate mobility. Unfortunately her old car has become unreliable. She is in a very rural area and public transport is unavailable. Due to her medical conditions she requires weekly hospital visits. Does anyone know of any schemes that allow car hire purchase on the lower rate of…

How do DWP know how much savings i have?
Hi, I receive ESA and PIP. I understand that my savings cannot go over £6000 but what if by accident they go a couple of hundred pounds over for a few days, for example when a bill is due? Would DWP know? I really don't want to get anything wrong. Do they randomly audit people or rely on honesty? Many thanks. 😊

Care cost questions after TBI accident.
My 75-year-old father, who was very fit and healthy, lives at home with his 68-year-old wife. In June 2023, he fell from a ladder, sustaining a serious brain injury. Though he was discharged after three months in the hospital and could perform basic tasks (walk, eat, dress, wash etc), he was noticeably different. His…

Struggling at the moment due to waiting on what responses I will get from the ESA and also ADP (Scotland). Can't…
