Thanks for your comments on this thread everyone. We've noticed, as some of you have also reported, that second cheques appear to have been sent to some customers...
Hello, I also received one of these cheques and also wondered if it was a scam as it was for just over £500. Came on this forum and enquired about it and people said to pay the cheque into my bank. First though I did phone HSBC as I've never been a customer, using the phone number from the internet and it turned out to be returned charges for a John Lewis credit card I had years ago. I didn't know HSBC had taken over JL Financial Services and when I paid it into my bank it cleared within a few days. The HSBC letter also said that there may be another payment due too. It felt almost too good to be true but I was very grateful for the unexpected windfall. That's a lot of money to me.
I just wanted to ask a question / share some general info.
Has anybody on this Forum post happened to cancel their 1st redress cheque due to non-receipt, and instead request payment via bank transfer? I’m trying to work out how long it actually takes to receive the monies via bank transfer as I’ve been told it takes a ridiculous 28 working days!
I found out from a speculative phone call to HSBC that a cheque was sent to an old Uni address in February this year. When I explained that I hadn’t received a cheque and I preferred bank transfer, they offered to send me a form to provide my bank details, or provide them there and then on the call, I opted for the latter. Now, it’s only £50 but I was surprised it will take a whopping 28 working days to process the payment! I was told a cheque is the same timeframe. I thought I would ask the question / share the info just in case anybody else is expecting payments soon.
The second bit of info relates to contacting HSBC on this matter, I was given this number: 0345 587 3533 (I know some will be wary of numbers shared but if you’re unsure, mention it to your local branch and they will vouch it’s correct / not a scam). They can tell you if / when cheques will be issued (or bank transfers if applicable) - you can also ask them to cancel a cheque you haven’t received and ask for a bank transfer. You just need to give them a reference or the relevant account number. They can also tell you the amount of any redress payments, but only once the payment has been released. For example, they can’t tell me if I’m entitled to a second payment and couldn’t offer me any numbers to chase this further myself. They did say, however that any further payments will be via bank transfer (rather than standard cheque) as the details are now saved on my record.
I’m new to posting on the forum, hope I do it right. Told my son to contact HSBS as he used to bank with them until 2013. He contacted them on phone number given in the MSE news email, and was told by HSBC that MSE email has given wrong dates, as a consequence they have been inundated with calls. Son was told it’s only customers who banked between 2018-2020 not 2010-2019 as in MSE email.

Has anyone else been told this??
Hi,
Are you referring to the first or second round of payments? If the first: it is absolutely the earlier timeframe (2010-2019) as that’s when I was a customer and I’m receiving a redress payment. If the second: I can’t say for sure, but when I mentioned to HSBC on the number in my post above, they didn’t correct me when I raised the date range, plus some customers from this period have already receive their second payments. Perhaps best if they can confirm in writing as staff in large banks often provide mixed messages.
I got money and I have never had any debt or overdraft or borrowing of any kind with HSBC or ever paid them any charges - go figure (nor any other HSBC branded bank nor indeed any bank)

We've just published a further update on this story here, which may address some of your questions over this mysterious redress scheme:
Why has HSBC really paid likely 100,000s people £100s in refunds and compensation? And could it owe even more?
Thanks,
MSE Helen
