Removed credit card association with Paypal but they still took the payment

I removed the credit card association with Paypal, not the credit card itself, but they still took a payment I am in dispute with them from it. 
How can they do this and should they have done it?
Is this not illegal?
Paypal first tried to take the payment from my bank account but I had cancelled the direct debit instruction and it was rejected.

Changed title to be clearer.

    Not if the payment was authorised.

    Cancelling a card never cancels payments. It just leaves you without a card.

    The payment was not authorised by me, the transaction was from a fraudulent account that I did not open and even the company that originally requested the payment agreed with me, then again if a company sets up a fraudulent account why should I believe them.

    You are mixing things up.

    The Paypal  agreement you signed with Paypal allows them to debit your card for any amount at any time. This is what Paypal did. Closing your credit card does not stop that.

    Separately to that you appear to be saying that Paypal shouldn't be debiting this particular transaction because it was fraudulent. This is a separate matter which you should take up with Paypal.

    I did not close my credit card, I removed it as a method of payment from Paypal.

    As far as PayPal are concerned, the credit card was still associated with your account when the payment was authorised whether it was by you or someone who obtained your password so I can't see that they've done anything wrong.  Surely if Kinguin agree that the transaction was fraudulent and have cancelled it as per your other thread then they will refund the payment.

    Hold on. If you cancel a direct debit they can’t set one up again without your permission. That’s part of the direct debit guarantee, if you’ve cancelled it via your bank/banking app and after a day later a company takes a payment you need to contact the bank for letting it take payment.

    That doesn’t change if you owe the money, they can try and recover, but absolutely a company can’t just reset up a direct debit without permission...

    You seem to be making a fundamental mistake, you are complaining that PayPal have processed a transaction on your account which was authorised, that means whoever placed the transaction had both your email and password.

    You need to first change your password and the password of any accounts on which you use the same password as well as making them all unique, you also need to activate two factor authentication on your PayPal account and finally run MalwareBytes on and Windows or Mac devices you use.

    The issue is not that PayPal have processed a transaction, it is that your account has been compromised.
