  When I purchased my Sonos system (over 10 years ago) there was no app for mobile phones just a PC program if you wanted it. It was all controlled by an expensive Sonos CR200 controller (that now won't work) and you didn't even have to be online to set up the system. My music was from my own devices - a NAS or line in. They have moved the goal posts....

  I can't help but feel that this is a move by SONOS to increase their sales! I am sure they make a tidy profit even with a claimed 30% discount to upgrade components. They are just speakers driven by an interface after all. There is no reason why updated interfaces can't talk to legacy equipment as well as new equipment. What is changing that means old equipment can't cope? Is the streaming bitrate increasing or anything that directly affects the quality of the sound from the speakers? If the answer is no, then I can't understand why old and new can't work together, delivering the same quality sound, whatever the interface changes.
